I would argue that kids don't know what they want until they see it. I was enamored with the 2000 leagues under the sea ride as a kid and I had no idea who Jules Verne was, just that you were in a submarine and you were attacked by a giant octopus. Sounds dope to me.

20K @ MK Orlando was my favorite ride growing up. I was 14yrs old when it closed. Growing up my Dad would take me to Disney 2x a year he was as excited as I was to go. I lost my dad to stage 4 Lung Cancer a couple years ago and going through his things I found a ton of 8mm film reels he shot at Magic Kingdom. I been converting them one at a time to digital. Once I discovered DEFUNCTLAND I been binge watching all your videos. Man thanks for bringing back so many good memories I appreciate you!

Out of all the theme parks I've been to, I'd have to agree with whomever thinks Disney Sea is the best theme park in the world. There are way more attractions suitable for adults. It's definitely known as a "date" park or the park you go to with your friends, not your family (though there are still families abound so it's still alright for kids). I even prefer the shows and parades at Sea over the ones at Land. If you ever get a chance to come to Japan you should definitely try to go to Disney Sea~

You’re probably like me. I’ve got submechanophobia, the fear of large, man made or unnatural objects in or under water.
@JennFrank
@JennFrank 3 года назад
For some reason, I was much more freaked out by the mermaids who were gathered around the sea serpent? Underwater, they were truly haunting. Whereas the sea serpent was kind of par for a Disney ride? Also I remember the way the diver was pulling at the turtle with this rhythmic back-and-forth, back-and-forth. The movement was so unnatural and robotic! As the submarine sloooowly went past one of the other divers in his diving helmet, I suddenly thought to myself "That animatronic doesn't have a face under there," and it chilled me to my core. So ultimately, I think the fish and the humanoid characters were a lot more startling than the serpent, at least for me. Ugh, especially the fish. (Not surprisingly, I now have phobias of both fish and of animatronics. Thanks, Childhood!)

I rode this ride as a small kid in the late 1970s. Took my kids to the park about 5 years ago, and only remnants of the ride remained in Orlando. Now I know what happened - I had always heard it was too expensive to operate, this just confirms it and the timing. Thank you.

My family went to Disney World in the summer of 1971. I was 8 years old, and I had yet to see 20 thousand leagues. But I knew of the movie and the sub ride was drawing me like a bug light. The site of that sub coming at you on that first turn was amazing. It was a thrill I'll never forget. My parents were pretty thrifty, and didn't buy too many tickets.. Plus the line to the rides were hellishly long, so we moved on into Fantasy land. We never returned to take a ride in the subs, and it's one of my life regrets.

I worked for Morgan Yacht when the 20,000 League subs were built - it was a lot of work , but for many of us it was well worth it. We built the stern-paddlers and the side wheelers as well as the steam launches used in the Adventure Land Jungle ride. One of the major reasons the Verne version closed was that it was the most popular ride in Disney World and had the longest waiting lines. A cost analysis of lost revenue due to such a large amount of guests not spending money for 3 hours was the major influence in not continuing the operation of the ride. It was all about the money.

I live in Tokyo, and Disney Sea is the best theme park I've ever visited. It's very small compared to Disney World, but every detail is spot on, and knowing that there's a huge city just out of sight makes it all more amazing.

I was fortunate enough to go on this ride when it still existed, and it was truly amazing. It was in fact so convincing that I was shocked to learn later that the subs never actually went below water. I mean, I wasn't a little kid and I knew we couldn't be very deep and that we were looking at animatronics and dioramas but I was legitimately convinced that the sub went down like 5 or 10 feet or something like that. I always imagined that the track descended and the sub brought in air through a snorkel or hose of some sort while underwater in the deeper portion of the track. When I found out that the depth never changed not even so much as a few feet I was stunned. The illusion was flawless.

I remember going on Submarine Voyage when the subs were yellow. I think it was 1995-97 or so. The last time I went to Disney land, when I still lived nearby. I really enjoyed the ride, and it was perhaps the most memorable one. I dont remember much about the ride itself, but the lagoon, the subs, and sense of "wonder" as you go underwater stuck with me. Not to mention, it was one of the easier rides to get on. The Matterhorn and Space Mountain had ridiculous lines that would have taken (seemingly) hours of waiting.

i heard that one of the major things that saved the subs at disneyland, was that the lagoon had been leaking for years and was making the matterhorn unstable. So, to remove the lagoon completely would have or could have brought the mountain down. So there was a delay in removing the subs till the mountain was stabilized... underpinned i think was the term. I guess the time it took to get a plan together allowed the subs to stick around long enough to where they finally had a hit movie to theme it to.

The Submarine Voyage was a neat idea for a ride, but it was never one of my favorite Disney attractions. Some neat stuff in there for sure but it didn't offer the same experience on multiple trips like others (I could ride Haunted Mansion over and over and find something interesting in it every time). Never did ride the 20000 Leagues version in WDW, though design wise it looked a bit cooler than the Disneyland counterpart. I was at Disneyland a few months ago, but never did ride the Finding Nemo redesign version, had too long of a line. Looks kind of neat though, wish I checked it out.

First went to Disney in '79, and this was the only ride that I totally loved. I didn't go back until 1995...just missed a 2nd ride. I can sort of understand why they closed it down, and why they didn;t try to turn it into a "vehicle" to promote the "Atlantis" movie. Still, it would have been assume for them to try and save that movie and the ride by pairing them up. Also, is it me, or are those concept sketches awesome - not so much a visualization of a ride or a setting, but like still shots from some incredible new movie.

Chris Perez being honest here. Not many people knew the rode existed before Frozen. Frozen Ever After did a amazing part in helping draw attention back to EPCOT and even getting it is (hopefully) soon-to-be renovation. maelstrom was expensive to keep up and an overall outdated ride that just didn't interest others. I don't like Frozen, but I like the rode wasn't gutted out. I like it was kept and just given a new face.

Chris, Maelstrom is my favorite attraction. I first saw it when I was a kid. I went back when I was a teen and again at age 23. Sadly, I found out I was among the last summer visitors to Maelstrom as it was mentioned online only about a month or two later that it was torn down! Space Mountain and the Star Jets are the only attractions that are still possible for me to visit today. However, I hate that they themed the Star Jets after Buzz Lightyear. It looks like a silly attempt at art-deco style. The original white spaceships were sent to Japan. At least they didn't destroy them. They are still in use at Tokyo Disney.

I went to disneyland paris about 10 years ago. I was quite young so I don't remember much, but I did ride on space mountian and do remember a strange sunmarine thing with a circular closing door and a giant squid....

I was watching this with headphones while in line at the store. You know that voice you get when you have headphones in because you can't tell the volume of your voice? Yeah I just said "sexy Bob Saget" out loud and I'm pretty sure everyone heard it lol.

That was my favorite ride as a little boy in the 70's, damn them to hell for ruining my return trip.

one of the youtubers i watch went to tokyo disney for christmas with his g/f/fience and they did journey to the center of the earth. the line is STILL huge. you need a fast pass to get on it with in an hour.

Greetings, I liked a lot this documentary. The only issue I see with it is the pace. If you could slow down it will make it sound more professional. It also helps if you try to attract people whose native tongue is not English. Great research, photos and videos are on spot :) hope you get more people subscribed to your channel

I wish Discovery Bay had happened, that would be my favorite part of the parks.

I mean, the Submarines in DL were cool, but the Nautilus? That was fantastic. So sad. Baxter is brilliant. I've got to get to Paris to see Discovery Bay and Tokyo's Mysterious Island. Ah, someday. Headed to Disneyland the week before Christmas this year, and I WILL be going under water.

I'm gonna say it but I really do wish that one of the natalus submarines were saved and placed in a Disney museum and kept to be like a homage to how the ride was but it's not moving and it's a simulator but the music and the voice lines are kept, who likes this idea?

I wish they would just make a land for all the most popular rides from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s
