I think it fits the idea of a demigod more. A mix of both like Maui. More than a man, but not exactly a full-fledged god like Lono, or Ku that represent an idea.
Nice! I haven't heard the story in this version, so much more detailed. Im part of the Mataisau clan in Bau (carpenter clan descendants of Rokola the clan from this story)...I wish i new the story of how we ended up in Bau
I always get the idea that Fiji has a separate lore from Maori, Samoan, and Hawaiian cultures. I grew up in Hawaii, and heard the Maui creation stories often, and heard similar stories concerning him in other areas of Polynesia except Fiji. I've never heard of this snake god legend before, and I wonder if there might a relation to the Mexican Quetzlcoatl (sp?). Both are also the head of a pantheon. It's worth researching.
This is the Melanesian side of Fijian mythology. A lot of ancient Fijian Gods are only found within Fiji tbh. Though some of our “Gods” do share similarities with some Polynesian Gods
Can you kindly point me in the right direction? Are their ancestral memories and ancient stories related to serpents/snakes in Hawaiian culture? I'm new to this and trying to find teachings specific to Hawaiian culture.
I just remember the "Hawaiiana" stories we were taught in Elementary school. I figure those should be widely available on the internet. Snakes are not native to Hawaii so I don't think a snake god would native to here. It just sounds old that a snake god would have sprung up anywhere in Polynesia. I'd like to know "if it were so, are there any similarities to Quetzelcoatl, and where did the idea occur first".
@rare.phukin.spotted.halibut Thanks for responding to me. It fascinates me that the ancestors taught about snakes/serpents when they are not native to Hawaii. The internet has been a wild goose chase for me. So much overlaps and conflicts and confuses
Lets live in harmony, peace. History was very hard, remembering yesterday will make matters worse. Lets live in the presence, 21 st century now i guess 🎉😊
The flood...fijian version of the great flood. Great Flood myth are present in most cultural traditions arpund the world from the Bible to ancient Greeks, Incas, Ancient Chinese folklore, etc etc
It fable that about this the powerful chief Lutunasobasoba and his people followed the trade cross the Indian Ocean traveling south east Asia settled Fiji Island 1st century cushites from Ethiopia settle in Tanganyika 10th century AD about this time the fable of fijian from Tanganyika ( Chronological History man in Tanganyika)
Wrong..Fijian giants colonised Egypt who loaded huge stone slabs at the base of those pyramids on their huge double hulled canoes nd shipped them over to Egypt. They did that.with north coasts of Africa's civilisation and the rest of the world. Your small Khufu boats can't load those huge stones. Remember the ones who built the Egyptian pyramids also built the American pyramids, Cambodian pyramids, Chinese pyramids, Indian pyramids, Bosnian pyramids, Indonesian pyramids, Fijian pyramid nd Hawaiian pyramid. So, they need big boats to load those huge stone slabs at the bases and construct the Pacific island ones..Shove that in your head.
This story is not a talanoa, it's a itukuni. It doesn't translate to myths or legendary folk tale. It's real except eons old. The itukuni must be refined and retold better. The original inhabitants of Viti were baige, i.e. fair skinned. It was the arrival of Lutunasobasoba contingent 3,500 years ago who left Egypt arriving in Viseisei, Vuda that integrated dark skin into the archipelago. Followed by the establishing and reign of the Verata state.
