Two things: First, I'm a big fan of how you talk about the experience - what themes you were going for, the rapport you had with your players, you intentions, your media touchtones, and what you wanted from the written material - and I think this is a really compelling way to review/reflect on campaigns and adventure materials. I got a LOT more insight and inspiration here than with many like, formal adventure-path read-throughs done in the style of a product review. Second: As someone who haven't heard of Degenesis before, and am trying to AVOID taking on some big new setting or campaign right now, I had to Google it and poke around a bit in it and just started thinking: "Uh ohhh, this is cool.... oh nooooo... oh noooooooooo this is really dope and original..." How did you originally discover and get into Degenesis?

Thank you for the note, and in particular for telling me which specific aspects of it you liked. I don’t even actually remember how I found out about Degenesis, but it was really low-profile at the time. It just really flipped so many switches for me, from the tone of the writing, the amazing art, and the basic premise of the Primer. I just knew I had to run it. In particular I liked the way factions were really rich and complicated, how there weren’t any clear good guys and bad guys. There were just humans, with all these competing motivations. So I skimmed the core books, then read them in detail, made a lot of notes, then suggested it to my group. They were enthusiastic about it (and knew me well enough to know it was right in my wheelhouse), and we jumped in from there.

I love hearing how different this played from my own experiences with running ITB TKG and Prepping for BA. And man it has given me a burst of energy.

Nice! I'm looking forward to hearing how BA turns out for your group.

I like how you describe realizing that you did yourself and the players a disservice by forcing the events to conform to the story as written by the end of TKG and how it taught you that going into BA you'll focus more on what makes sense in your version of the story and just fully absorb the background material to make that work. I used the same approach and it was very rewarding to see how the story can play out completely differently depending on who the characters are and what motivates them.

I’m proof that you can play tabletop RPGs for a lonnng time and still screw things up. But I’m also proof that an old dog can learn new tricks. :D Glad to hear you and your crew had a great time with the campaign!

@@SettingFirstRPG That's a nice way you've put it. I skipped ITB and I started in a similar way you did with the setup for TKG, i.e. that the players all were from there and already had their backstory and connections interwoven with the different players in that scenario.

yo, I really enjoyed the video! I love hearing about how the campaigns played out in other groups. Any plans on playing the Justian books (if that's even possible)?

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I've used the Justitian books in our campaign but the characters didn't stay there all that long. But it wouldn't surprise me if the Sons of Lucatore make their way back up to the Protectorate at some point. There's just so much in those Justitian books and I'd really love to use more of that material.

Its awesome to hear bout this!! I only managed to run ITB, then life got in the way… Its great to hear people talk about Degenesis, so that Sixmorevodka can keep pumping out more setting!! Also if you could give some insight into the Hybrispania plot… I would love to read more about that region!

Life does indeed get in the way. Thanks for your note! My plan is to put the Hybrispania adventure out into the wild eventually, but I have to finish prep and have my crew run through it first. So it may be a while. When that happens, I'll definitely post a video about it.
