How I degree'd my cams on my zx10.
Tried to explain everything as best I could after a late night of getting my cams all dialed in. The only thing I think I did a poor job of explaining in the video is how to try and get your numbers you want.
Here is an example of finding numbers.
Say you got 38* & 68* when you got you intake readings here is the math you would do
38+68+180 = 286
Then devide that number by 2 and then subtract the smaller number of the 2 degree readings. So:
286/2 = 143
143-38 = 105
So say you wanted to degree you intake degree'ing to 110 the easiest way I found was this formula
(First Reading + second reading + 180) /2) - overall reading. So in the above example the formula would be
((38+68+180)/2)-105=33
That is 5* off what or original reading of 38 was. So I would go back and loosen the one cam gear bolt and then spin the motor over to when the valve opens to .040" and stops. Then loosen the other cam gear bolt and go to the other side of the motor and spin it until the degree wheel gets to 33. You can watch the cam gears move as you're turning the crank. I would then tighten up the 2 bolts, spin the motor over by hand a few times and repeat the process until I got the numbers I wanted.
Here is the link to Web Cams how to. I read this I don't know how many times when I was first trying to figure out what I was doing.

Thank you very much for this video. I'm getting ready to this to my zx6r and find myself a bit nervous. This video took a lot of that anxiety away.

Hi bro so fitted the oem racekit intake and exhaust cam with the intake at 113 degrees and exhaust 108 degrees. Gained 5hp up top. Does that sound right to you to me its abit disappointing really. Why did your head guy recommend 110 for the intake is that for more torque or hp Thanks

Is it a must to use this for degreeing cams? In the manual the dont mention it?

Another thing I'm busy doing the shims on the exhaust side. I've got 4 that's on 0.20 and 4 that's on 0.23 the max is 0.22 would you be happy with that or will you change them?
@C3L1CA94
@C3L1CA94 5 лет назад
I just used the hotcam shims since I couldn't find anybody that stocked the kawi shims that come in more settings. If it were me I'd probably try swapping in a .5 smaller and see what it came out to. I know when i did mine I didn't have every feeler gauge from .17 to .22 so i kind of guessed at the clearance based on which feeler gauge I had. If it was close and it was a guess at the number, I'd try swapping it and see what it came to. If that makes sense.

Thank you for the video it helps a lot. I’m trying to degree a cam on R1 and there is no space on piston #1, I have to dial on last piston only. I was confused if we can degree a cam on any piston or no? I saw you identify the TDC on first piston but then you degree on the last one.

I've got a 2016 zx10r the race intake cam you can buy for it will you be able to fit it just like that or are you going to have to do shims aswell
@C3L1CA94
@C3L1CA94 5 лет назад
You will first want to make sure that your clearances are setup no matter what cam you run. You can look at the manual for cam specs and when setting up the dial indicator you'd take max lift, subtract out the clearance to make sure you have your dial indicator setup correctly. Process should work with any type of cam, you're number you get will be different than my example.

Yea I think it'll probably be slightly different on most things but hopefully the concept helps a bit! I wanted to get into that type of racing but when I looked at the costs it was just too spendy for my blood so went the drag racing route. Much cheaper lol. Since I got my carbon wheels I have my tires changed buy a guy who does a lot of track days and he always laughs at me when I talk tire prices or make a comment like that as drag racing at my level for fun is actually really cheap lol
@robertloose7631
@robertloose7631 3 года назад
@@C3L1CA94 Any way you slice it no racing can be described as “cheap”. As evidence I submit carbon fiber wheels! 😂 I’ve done some drag racing myself both on 2 wheels and 4 and you are correctly that it can definitely be less expensive than road racing. Road racing doesn’t have to be outrageous either though. It just depends how many classes and races you want to run. I have been wanting to get the bike to Union Grove for a couple of season now just to practice launches. I’m actually pretty good at them but practice never hurts. Thanks again for the video.

@@robertloose7631 lol yea the carbon wheels were definitely a splurge because I found them for a good deal from a local guy. No problem on the video, hope it helped a bit and good luck on racing in 2021!

The manual said nothing about reading the degrees with 0.04 inch of lift, does it?
@C3L1CA94
@C3L1CA94 3 года назад
It doesn't, that is just what I used based on my research. Some people use that, some use 1MM which is very close to .04". I liked using 0.04" as it was easy for me to see and zero in on as spinning the motor around.

I'm not sure if the gen 5s like different degree numbers but I went with what my head guy recommended to me and has posted over on the www.zx-10r.net/forum. You could try looking around the forum and see if anybody has different numbers they recommend on a gen 5 or make a thread and see if anybody chimes in. I just went with what I was told worked well, I'm no expert on picking numbers.

DID YOU ADJ THE LASH OUT FIRST?
@mikerieck306
@mikerieck306 3 месяца назад
No need to get zero lash (which is a PITA with shim valve trains). I degree all cams with the proper lash. Your opening and closing numbers give you the lobe center you're looking for. Example...if your intake cam should open the valve at 20 degree BTDC at .040 lift and you have .005 lash your lift number will at 15 degrees BTDC. Subtract the lash from the opening/closing numbers. Easy.

Are you still running your standard cams or are running Kawasaki race cams? I'm busy installing the race cams from Kawasaki its the same part numbers as in the manual your looking at so I'm just going to go of the recommendation they have for the degrees?
@C3L1CA94
@C3L1CA94 5 лет назад
I was just running stock cams. Could try the numbers it recommends for the race cams, seems like it'd be good as long as there is proper piston to valve clearance.

The general idea of how to use the degree wheel should apply to any engine, what you'd want to degree the cams to would probably be different depending on engine/cam setup
