A good tip is to cut strips of inner tube to tie around the heifers heads after dehorning. The elastic keeps it tight then easy to whip off the next day. Great video et bon courage
We always use a section of the right sized inner tube, doubled up on their head for a day or so to cut down on the bleeding. Very good looking cattle,Thanks from Manitoba,Canada.
Wow I never seen anything like that for taking off horns, We do them as calves with the burner works well for us, Laura thanks for filming fantastic job as always..
hello friend of all the ways to dehorn this is the fastest and it is perfect, in adult cows with 7 years old can I cut like this with that angle that you use to fit the animal's head? don't you burn after cutting? I loved the video but I would like to know if this is the best way to do my whole vacation
Howdy from Texas! Never seen a dehorning gadget like that before, sure makes it quick and simple. Nice tip using string to apply pressure to halt the bleeding, I learned something new 😉
That’s some weapon for dehorning, it’s a great tool. Nice tidy looking super dexta you have in the shed.. the sound quality is much better now Laura, could hear your dad loud and clear. Great video as always 👍👍
Our local vets in Pembrokeshire use the power saw, too. An old trick is to stick broken matchsticks into any bleeding veins, which is pretty effective. But the paste is better - altho' we too end up with one-horned cows to deal with!
Interesting in the dehorning. Never seen it done like that amazing! Just need somebody to invent a quiet angle grinder. “Short and quick just like the dentist” remind me NOT to use a Irish dentist. Ps going to try the trick with the band to stop bleeding
I bought one of those dehorners about ten years ago and do a few every year and do some for the odd neighbours I find that if you leave a good rasher of hair around the base of the horn they bleed very little and don't grow a slug not that a bit of a slug makes much odds but some that I did about ten years ago and were kept for cows grew slugs that eventually grew into their heads so I had to wire off the offending bits eventually ( I'm talking six or seven years later) . I don't remember but I think I gave about €450 for the one I got and that included the dewalt grinder, my vet gets me to do most of the sculling that he has or borrows it for some clients between us we did 237 half mad cattle for a man about five years ago injecting them was the biggest job, cows , 3 year old bullocks back to strong calves, luckily we brought our new portable crush otherwise we would probably have been broken up as the facilities were not great, my vet still laughs about it, he says that the look on my face was comical when I looked into the shed and saw what was ahead of us, needless to say he had told me that we had a few weanlings to do and maybe a cow or two. We only had to replace the blade last year when I think back to sculling cattle fifty years ago with a saw the hardship on both man and beast, it's just a pity that some guys don't dehorn calves when they are small but at least we can make it as painless and as quick as possible when we have to do the job.
How big are the farms , do you have to do paper work like we do here in lreland , you have a well laid out garage , you know well your dad worked in a garage ,good operated .
Hello, yes we will be letting for holiday rentals. Once they are near ready we will have all the details in a video, but probably through airbnb and through the youtube email address
Dehorned as calves with the gas dehorner is the best. Have to say though, that grinder tool is a great job. Have bad memories doing them here when I was young (co. Clare) as yearlings with a handsaw and me covered head to toe in blood.
Yes the handsaw is an awful job! We use the burner on calves indeed as seen in previous videos but this year expanding the herd, we have a few to do this way ☺️
Uploads are class my question is what do yo miss about Ireland as I work away a lot as I am a bricklayer and miss simple things like soda bread, wheaten bread hence the name, take care 👍🇮🇪
Great job! That attachment for the 9" grinder is unreal. Did your Dad make it or did he buy it somewhere? I use the wire myself an odd time but only a handful. .. I can't imagine doing 36 in one day with the wire!! 2 or 3 heavy cable ties are handy too as a tourniquet. Do ye ever bother or have to halter cattle? Sometimes cattle are quieter when cattle front and back of them and just tie them up to the crush bars or ye could tie em inside in locking barriers
Hi Laura just wondering where ye got them pumps from in ireland for the solar . What psi and flow rate are they. Going making one here. Videos are great great to see how ye are going over there while we are walking around in water back here.😁 . Thanks
Hi, yes we do. As dad explained, the only reason these heifer's have horns is because we were not planning on keeping them in the beginning, and then decided to expand the herd and also some heifer's were bought in. Thanks for the comment 😊
Dehorning cows / heifers is nota job for the weak hearted. But sometimes it has to be done - like “dad” have done many over the years. Glad to see it’s raining there too - my farm has never been so wet. Had our first calf of 2021 yesterday - bull and because they are Salers, calved unassisted and then 12 hours later walked 1/2 mile into the buildings. She was a week early and caught us out a bit as the cows only came in of the hills today. Farming, love it or walk away. Take care
Farming Life at La Forge Doing well thank you, it’s the first time our cattle have been house as we normally out winter - but the weather has beaten us. My only fear is it getting trampled ?
Hi i really enjoyed that video ,i agree with your dad on the wire ,it was hard bloody work ,the angle grinder is so fast ,i was so amazed ,WOW ,also never in all my life working with animals did i see that trick of stopping bleeding as we always cotterised with a hot bolt
@@FarmingLifeatLaForge can they be purchased ...........its a mighty way of doing it on your own compared to anything else ......so quick its over before the animal knows it ...............
@@georgedoorley5628 yes they can, we bought it where we saw the new machines where being sold and saw the spare ones. Not sure what they are called now sorry
As explained in the video we dehorn our calves when they are calves, however these heifers were bought in and needed to be dehorned for their own and our safety. They were numbed and this is the quikest and least stressfull or painfull method we can do. The cattle were under no harm don't worry ;)
@@jamesnevin6076 we do dehorn when they are calves, as dad explained, these were not dehorned as they were going to be sold then later decided to keep. We don't do this to all our cattle
Unfortunately cameras are expensive. It takes a full day for me to add subtitles so it is very unlikely I will add any on videos until i find a better way. Thanks for the comment 😊
Video quality seemed fine to me. If its glare from sun for couple seconds through door of workshop you mean, wise up..!! It only lasted couple secs. You've little to moan about. She's a farming girl doing a bit of RU-vid on side. Keep up the good work Laura, most of us love your work, and all the best from lreland.
