I was totally chuffed to watch this and your lovely acknowledgement. Seems Rachel and I watched this on the same night. Would never have thought to add those breadcrumbs to the bolognaise, but makes total sense. Such great food and free of all the nasties that can trigger my allergies, that get put into those commercial hike foods. I reckon my mum's chop suey recipe will also dehydrate a treat. That two step separate meat cooking part to remove any fat was a great tip. Again would never have thought to do that. As for thise tomatoes..... YUM. A huge thank you for this and all your other inspiring hiking videos. They are so informative and bring pleasure just watching them!

A little trick I read when vacumm sealing dehydrated spaghetti, rice etc. Is to line the plastic pocket with paper towel and then seal the food inside that. The paper stops the sharp pieces piercing the plastic and allowing air in. This seams to work well.

Hello Kate from Cleveland Ohio USA! I just came across your channel about 15 min ago for the first time. I am a gourmet cook, and loved your video about hydrating dahl, jerky and tomatoes! I am so grateful I happened across this! I recently bought a $50 dehydrator. Am rather new to dehydrating. I have been successful with dehydrating single food items, and I backpack. I have dehydrated wild mushrooms that I forage, onions, garlic, zuchini, but not tried yet anything comprehensive in my dehydrator to date. I am so excited to try your dahl and jerky recipes, this weekend I hope! Thank you for an easy video to watch. It was very calming and informative. I just subscribed. I look forward to watching everything else you videoed. I hope you continue your channel!

I got one for you guys called peanut fudge, mix one cup honey with one cup peanut butter, then add one cup of powdered milk and one cup of icing sugar, then mix together and form balls about the size of two walnuts or whatever size you like, once balls are formed roll balls in 2 cups of chopped roasted peanuts or you can keep the peanuts whole and roll them with the balls or make square slabs if you like, once done put in fridge for 2 hrs....then vacum or freezer bag them. I have eaten them after two weeks not stored in a fridge with no problem....enjoy.

Hi Kate, enjoy watching you on Alone - both my wife and I hope you won - but we know you can't tell us yet! I was a member of the Canberra Bushwalking Club for years but never came across you as far as I can remember, I've moved down to Melbourne and now do high country walks mostly and occassional ones in the Grampians. Thanks for the Dahl and the spag bol recipes. Could you advise how much water to add to rehydrate the Bol and Dahl food back to edible? I thought that I would simply weigh the pre-dehydrated food and dehydrated food then calculate the moisture loss then add that much water but recently my spag bol turned out like yukky soup. Demonstrating how to rehydrate (amount and temp of water and techniques) could be a good follow up video? I'm trying Woolworths 'Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)' instead of meat for my next overnight walk with some dry lentels and chickpeas with some Indian spices (an attempt to save an animal!)- I'll let you know how that goes - the TVP is already dehydrated so I'll follow the instructions on the pack for that. Again thanks, I really enjoy your videos, and although I've been hiking for many years I always learn something new from them.

Hello! New subscriber here 👋These are great ideas. Will deffo be trying these two for my Overland trip :) Question....you mention cutting the fat off the steak as it can spoil. How does all the fat in the dahl (butter and yoghurt) go?
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 2 года назад
yeah great question. I don' have problems with mine. Perhaps it is because it is mixed though and can dry out much better than if it was a great chunk of fat. I think the fat on the steak, while delicious if used quickly, it doesn't try out? But to be completely honest I don't really know.

Hey Kate! Curious if you rehydrate by cooking in your pot or if you just boil water and pour it over your meals? Trying to figure out how to do the latter with home cooked meals and using the right bags to hold the food and hot water while rehydrating 😊
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 2 года назад
Cool Emma. Yeah it depends on the meal. The Dahl blended to a powered works find rehydrating by just adding hot water but the meat ones not so well. I think it’s all about the size of the dehydrated particle. The meat chunks are bigger and take a bit of time to rehydrate. Vego is probably the way to go for water only rehydration. My favourite alternative is Radix Nutrition: bit.ly/33VgynV they don’t put preservatives in the food so it doesn’t upset my tummy like the other meals do. These are my go to meals when I really just want to throw water on something and eat it. One sad alternative is cold soaking your dehydrated meals. But yep a bit sad having a cold meal. Best of luck on your adventures
@petra3615
@petra3615 2 года назад

@@petra3615 thanks mate. No I either put the dry stuff in the pot with water and boil (no plastic) or if very fine like dahl I sometimes just put it in my bowl then put the hot water on top. Hope that makes sense. The only thing i eat in plastic bags is the store stuff radix.cheers

If you don't have a vacuum sealer, you can use a vacuum cleaner, just put the food into a bag, (leave the bag open) put an additional larger bag around it, suck the air out of the larger bag with the vacuum cleaner (which will suck the air out of the smaller bag as well) and close the bag with the food while it's still inside the larger bag and the vacuum is still running.

Oh one question. I've watched many American trekking vids where they recommend 2 pounds of food per day (approx. 907 grams per day). Being a rather voluptuous woman (lol) I thought I'd elevate that to 1kg / day. Do you think this would be too much to carry?
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
No that would be fine. Sometimes I can get my food weight down to 700g per day and I love to eat. I aim for 2000 to 3000 calories per day and one way to get this without too much weight is to select food that has at least 350 calories (or 1476kj) per 100g. Not everything you take will be this high in calories but these foods are brilliant for getting the calories up while keeping the weight down. eg Almonds 576 cal per 100g Pecans 700 cal per 100g Powdered Milk 496 cal per 100g Olive oil 884 cal per 100g Peanut M&Ms 513 cal per 100g Pasta 352 cal per 100g Rice crackers 384 cal per 100g Peanut Butter 588 cal per 100g (protein rich) Dark chocolate 546 cal per 100 Beef jerky 410 cal per 100g (protein rich) Salami 444 cal per 100g (protein rich) Protein powder 401 cal per 100g Dried potato (Deb) 324 cal per 100g

Hi So why does it need to go in freezer? If dehydrated and vacuum sealed does it last several days or months? I want to do Bibbulmun and send my self meals but they could be in a box waiting for me for months, would I be better off with the store bought freeze dried meals?
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
Hey mate I just put them in the freezer as I thought it would help them keep better - I totally recommend the Facebook groups dehydrating devas and dudes and dehydrating your own backpacking food, they can answer your technical questions. The food will probably keep fine if it is properly dehydrated - but it is always good to test your food. I love to make it and then test it say 2 weeks later or perhaps in your case 2 months later. The other issue with WA if you are not from that state is that they can be a bit funny about foods that could contaminate their environment. I have heard things about food being taken at the border, while commercially packaged foods tend to be ok. But for a trail that long id go crazy having to survive on commercially bought foods. Best of luck

And I’m with you I can’t survive on freeze dried store bought for that long. Looks like I’ve got lots of investigation ahead of me. Thank you love your RU-vid channel 😍

@@michelehoward9668 so cool I’m jealous. I’ve been wanting to do that trail for ages. I did cape to cape and got some of my food across in my luggage. But I found this link helpful www.agric.wa.gov.au/exporting-western-australia/quarantine-information-private-travellers Also brilliant you are starting so early you should be able to sort out some delicious meals. I have been enjoying radix nutrition they don’t upset my tummy but nothing beats home made. Radix gave me a 5% code if you get super keen it’s KATEG5

4:29 innoculating some mouth bacteria 🦠 🦠🦠 from both of tasting ladies. They can grow millions left at room temperature especially if dehydration is not complete. After every time of tasting I suggest using a new spoon or washing the used one. The 2nd dip into the food is innoculating mouth bacteria. This is why 1 dip 1 spoon. It’s good to see this because I have to dehydrate my own food. Thanks for sharing.
