We enter the canyon and after Phantom Ranch go off trail to do what’s known as a “Steck Route” to get around the closure on the AZT. We spend 3 days in the canyon. Do we make it through? Do we turn around? Find out!

When Mr. Black quotes the Coast Guard motto, that is really serious stuff! I was seriously impressed with your attitude and dedication to getting an extremely serious task accomplished. All the while, you found the nerve and outright audacity to seriously consider just trying to finish the journey through the extreme terrain, while still underway that you did have a retreat if necessary, without seriously screwing your hike and health up. This is a hard definition of leadership, Twister. Getting the job done, and keeping the group together. No one, especially you, slacked at all, and need to be recognized and commended. Finding the water was one of some major keys to success, yet having THE proper attitude and outlook was important above all. Physical condition was a close behind second. If your story ended up back on the the South Rim, licking your wounds and bruised egos, your story would have still stood strong. In the military, Retreat is a sound, wise tactic. You always made certain you all were going to live to hike another day. When I saw the rock cairns, I had to wonder just how darned great that must have felt! You all did an exceptional job, and all praise is due! The armed forces, and my Boy Scouts for starters, need to know of your story, and Sawyer or whichever company, needs to show a mudpuddle with you and the others explaining just how darned good and absolutely necessary water filters are! And I'll shut up for now. You done good, you guys are an inspiration, and "See you on the Trail. " (If you can believe a Boomer...)
Hey thanks so much for the encouraging comment! It really means a lot to me :) Our group really worked exceptionally well together and took care of each other. The Cairns were a HUGE boost! We almost turned around day 3 because we weren’t sure if the route was going to work! Oh and for filters we had a sawyer and a platypus filter! And yes, super essential! That was an amazing video. So scary though with the water situation and difficult route. I've been to the Grand Canyon as a tourist but seeing it through your eyes was something special. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Absolutely epic in every way! You were a fantastic team that worked well together through some real challenges along the way! Gotta love the Grand Canyon!🏜️ Two years ago I overcame my extreme fear of heights going down 3 miles on the Bright Angel trail and now planning on doing r2r next fall. When you started out by saying “if you skip around the video…..” and let me just say, no way! Not on this trip! I would never! Then I was on the edge of my seat. On day two I just knew it wasn’t going to go well with the water situation but then after you found the mud hole, and everyone was sitting around and spirits were high, Sticks said looking back on the day, “ there was no water for spirits to sink into” I absolutely felt that! And then, on day three when you said this might’ve been the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, my heart just sank. I was also overjoyed when you found the cow patties! How hilarious that something like cow patties can make a hiker’s spirits soar! Seeing you all, get out of there in good condition, I was overjoyed and thanked God for it! It was also nice to hear you say you’d do it again.

That’s absolutely awesome. I did some hiking of the Canyon in 2014 5 days but just some basic hiking and camping at Phantom Ranch and Indian Gardens with some side hikes to Ribbon Falls and Tonto plateau. Congratulations that was so awesome. Enjoy that memory!!!
Astounding, amazing adventure! Thank you for sharing! You guys did an excellent job! Years, seems like centuries ago, I did a contour route. I grew up on my moms stories of the old trails in the canyon from the 1920s.. there were many more than exist today. Around 1959 or 60 we went down the old hermits rest rail,with a small group of rangers. They were considering reopening it. Later , in the late 60’s I wanted to see if any of them were still functional. What a trip… I so enjoyed your adventure, first on its own rights, but also because it stirred memories! Thanks guys!❤

This is such a excellent video! Your video captures all the beauty of the Grand Canyon 😊 Wonderful team work and showing the struggles you all went through. I have been in situations where, as soon as the incidents pass, many immediately go to passing the event off as no big deal. I think it's just a way for the brain to help with coping during stressful events. The way you took the time to film how you felt is wonderful because you can always reflect back and say I had these feelings. Those feelings were important. They will definitely help you in your future endeavors. They may just help others as well, and that take the time to watch your episode. At any rate, wonderful video, great job by you all. I really enjoyed the longer video 😊
As a longtime backpacker and hiker I will never, EVER understand why people feel the need to share this kind of thing. The need to be seen. No fucking thank you.
Hi, I don't film my trips like this and then post them on social, but I definitely write about them and tell stories. I think one of the greatest things about backpacking and adventure is the stories and comradery that they enable, and the human element of connection. Wilderness traversals are often spectacular because they can help provide very humbling perspective on what it means to be alive. Hiking with twister was fun and and I loved the opportunity. Watching our adventures and videos that have been documented is neat, and being able to connect and engage with other people in this form is something different from what I'm used to for trips. I have mixed feelings about making and sharing RU-vid videos. I think over time I will have more settled thoughts, but for now the human race is still trying to figure out the benefits and disadvantages of social media. I appreciate your comment.
@@JeffKessler_PhD OK. But my take as a dude with thousands of miles under his boots isn't going to change. These types of things aren't about sharing. They're about "look at me." And one of the big downsides to that is WAY too many 'influencers" doing really shitty/stupid stuff out there. I live in a forest at 7K and have seen it first hand. The need for attention knows no bounds. I'm sure I"m older than you and I'm also sure that motivates my opinion. Want to share some shots or a write up with friends? Have at it. But this kind of thing just speaks to something that I find really, really distasteful. Happy trails.
I actually make these videos for myself and my family/first! :) When I look back on all my hikes, I absolutely love the videos I have of the experiences whether it’s clips of myself talking, the people I meet, the scenery, etc And since I love to take videos of everything, by far the easiest way for me to store them all is to upload it to RU-vid. It’s going to be on their servers long after I’m dead so I don’t have to worry about trying to fit all the clips on my phone or anything like that 😄 I’m sorry you find me posting videos about something I love to do distasteful. I would agree that influencer culture has a great capacity for destructive behavior but I would push back on you for thinking my videos perpetuate that (I also have very few subscribers, don’t make a penny from RU-vid and don’t care one bit! 😄). I’m just out here hiking and sharing it with whoever wants to watch. Hope you have a great day and God bless :)
