Thank God someone's speaking up on this. EDC has become a culture of grown ass men collecting toys they really want but never play with after a day. We could all use a lot more minimalist mentality in our lives

I use the pliers daily, sometimes at work when hoses have twisted themselves too tight, while riding dirt bikes, making woodpecker feeders, heating up nails to poke holes in the bottom of 5 gallon buckets and the list goes on. Can’t live without them!

it is just jewelry for most people I guess. also, what is wrong with having toys? I say as someone who has spent like 30-40$ on said EDC jewelry this year (a couple of flashlights and a a cheap keyring blade), let people be happy. They may find joy (though it just might be a fool being parted with their greens, in which case let them learn and let survival of the fittest kick in).

I fully believe in carrying what matches your lifestyle and skill level. I worked as a mechanic for almost a decade in my 20s and 15 years later I still carry a basic set of tools in my car. I use those tools once a month because I recognize and find experiences to be useful. I don’t tell everyone to haul a set of metric sockets because they wouldn’t know what to do with them. Carry what you know how to use.

@FictionWeLiveIn

Agreed. And also, carry it appropriately. I worked construction for a decade, I have a lot of tools but now that I'm out, I don't carry any of them on me except for some in my vehicle for emergencies. If I need a wrench, I'll go grab my wrench. If I need pliers, I'll go grab my pliers. Even when I was in construction and found I needed something in my pocket to do quick little tasks, a leatherman filled that role perfectly. What gets me is that you need a tool frequently enough to warrant carrying it in your pocket every day, you should just get a proper version of that tool and keep it nearby. I've never thought, "man I should go grab a miniature version of this tool to use".

@@JasonSinatra-s3e surely they can´t replace a full sized version of the same tool. But they can replace the pliers of a Leatherman. And the combination of a small Knipex Alligator and a Victorinox SAK has advantages and disadvantages compared to the Leatherman - while having comparable size and weight. Rule of thumb is: The higher the multi-functionality of a tool is, the worse gets its performance for a specific task. My goal was, to replace my Leatherman Super Tool 300 with several more specialized tools while maintaining the same weight and volume and get better functionality. ....and I managed to do so for a lower price than the Leatherman originally had, so where is the problem with that?

Man, everything you said is so accurate. I’m a lifelong tradesman and mechanic by training. A lot of the crap I see people who work white collar jobs carrying around is stuff I would only use occasionally in service of my actual trade job, let alone in life in general. A lot of the reviewers of tools on RU-vid have little experience using them and it’s obvious by watching their videos. Blue collar has become a fad and is romanticized by the white collar. Meanwhile, the focus is on the tools and not the skills to utilize them.

I have lots of EDC gear. Keys, phone, wallet, flashlight, knife, multitool, pen, sharpie, paper, pry tool, and yes, pliers and a driver. My rule is that, if I need it 3 times in a month, and don't have it, I'll give it a try. If I don't use it for a week, it goes on probation. If a month goes by without use, it loses its spot. Oh. Tissues. I go through several packs a week. And a paperclip. I keep finding myself 40 feet up on a lift, needing a driver, or a side cutters, or a pry tool. The one item I haven't figured out how not to carry is a bottle opener/cap lifter. Those things are like roaches. The rest of the stuff you mentioned, not sure what it is. Apparently, the need never arose.

I use a flashlight daily at work and at home, it preserves my phones battery and is much brighter than a phone flashlight. I do carry a wallet phone case but it does come with the risk of losing BOTH your phone and all of your money and cards at the same time. If you need a bottle opener to open a bottle, you're a wuss. EDC saturation happens to all of us. Then one day we realize: how many of these amazing, expensive tactical folding knives do I need? My sock drawer had like $2K in covetable Emerson or Benchmade or whoever’s wonder tool in it. “My ‘stash.” I eventually started giving all my stuff away to good people at graduation events. I have one favorite tactical folder that I like that goes everywhere with me. Done. Surefire and Pelican duke it out for my current EDC flashlight. But I carry only one with a few backups in the truck or at home. I am equipped, I am trained and I am confident in what I got. As a Veteran I demonstrate a lot of RESTRAINT daily, for many things and on many fronts. Yes, it is cool, yes, I like it, no, I don’t need it, no, it’s not better than what I already have, yes, it’s a great price, but I will pass now, thank you. If it was truly better kit than I might look at if for a second or two longer, but I probably don’t need it anyway. Great video my dude. All our EDC starts off “too extra” and then we streamline to what truly must be carried. RESTRAINT is the word of the day. 😎✌️

Just because your uncoordinated and fearful don't mean the rest of us are. No fancy beads, knots, colored twine. And yes the knife gets used to open gain sacks, cut rope, string, sticks, meat, peal potato's, apples, spread peanut butter, clean battery terminals, clean game and fish, etc., etc., etc., it hasn't killed me yet. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and I stick by it… Most EDC guys are just F-in weirdo hoarders who moved from action figures to obscenely overpriced grown-man gear toys. I’m a knife hoarder. Guilty as charged. I collect knives. I collect them, I don’t need them at all. I need maybe 3. One for my pocket, one for my truck, one for the toolbox. But if I have one in my pocket, I don’t really need the other two now do I? I use them to open boxes and packages, cut random normal stuff, fidget with, and that’s it. In reality, most EDC stuff is just pretty damn stupid. I’m already sick of titanium everything. Especially smooth titanium with no nothing. No milling, no color, no nothing. Great… your very expensive knife looks like a freaking gray crayon. Yawn. Who the F carries pliers? Plumbers. Pliers! GTFO here with that noise! I’ve NEVER once carried pliers in my life. And never once was in a situation where I thought, “damn if I only had some EDC pliers I could tighten this here widget and save the day!” Lanyards are ridiculous. Lanyard beads are way more ridiculouser. Ultem is the ugliest crap I’ve ever seen! Reminds me of BakeLite from the 70s (Google it). I’ll never have Ultem anything. Titanium Tactical pens! Seriously? Get a pack of Pentel EnerGel Metal Tips for your writing needs. $20 for 5. Great pens. Smooth. Ahhh so nice. Get a 9mm for your tactical needs. You’re never going to stab anybody in the throat with your Titanium Tactical pen and then use it to fill out a police report. NEVER! Just stop already! (You had a ninja throwing star back in the day didn’t you?!) Pry bars. Really? Because dudes just pry stuff all day. Honestly can’t remember the last time I had to pry something… and I’m old AF! Needing stuff for your job is one thing. Carrying rando crap for no reason is altogether different. Buying rando crap because some bobblehead on social media had it sent to him for free, and then lauded it as the greatest thing ever, is just next-level sheepleness. Resist groupthink. Do not comply. Every knife is not the greatest. Pliers are for plumbers. Titanium Tactical Pens are for mall ninjas. Pry bars are not super ultra useful. Lanyards are dorky. Ultem is ugly. That is all. I'm glad someone said it. I carry a sack farmer and a bic lighter and a plastic card magnifier every day. If I need some cordage or bigger tools or something else I don't carry on my body I go to my truck. That being said I do like watching videos because someone may carry something that I may find useful. And I actually would use a tiny set of knipex pliers. I broke my 4" channel locks but they would again stay in the truck. Good video man.

100% agreeable. If you don't have a use for it, don't waste your money (which is getting in shorter supply anyway). Said by the guy who buys too many flashlights, but then I COLLECT them, and have since I was maybe 8 or 10. I have bit drivers in my tool bag, but not in my EDC. Titanium gives me no benefit worth its price. I don't have any Knipex. I hadn't heard of Ultem. Lanyards are most often a space-wasting, gangly irritant.

Bravo - Finally someone who is prepared to not follow the crowd - Most of the EDC tool reviews on RU-vid are driven by what seems like genius concepts but practically don't work. Just because something is expensive or well marketed doesn't means it's the silver bullet. I agree with you - Spending crazy money on Titanium or Ultem on a proper daily use item that could get misplaced is just bad economics. If you buy it to look cooler than everybody else and don't really use your tools, then go ahead and make somebody else rich. All that said, if you just like to collect stuff and get pleasure from flexing - nothing wrong with that. BTW - love the Joe Roganesk vibe you use in your messaging. Your production quality is good - keep up the great work.

I carry knipex pliers at work, and they're fantastic. The design is excellent with the way they cam in tighter the harder you turn them, and the materials are great - 61 hrc teeth never wear out so they end up cheaper over a few years if you use them a lot. My large pair are used every day for the last 20 years and still work just as well as they did when they were new. I have a small pair in my work trousers pocket and I love them. I never ever carry them outside of work, even though I own them, when do I need to tighten plumbing unions outside of work or the home? They'd be very useful on a motorcycle I suppose but otherwise if you can't do it with a sak and a flashlight you should be using proper tools! Prybars are the same. The one on my work keys gets used, the one on my car keys just looks cool and never gets used...

As someone that carries quite a bit of the things you've mentioned I do get your point. If it serves a purpose it's not a bad thing to carry. If you occasionally use it put it in an extended EDC pouch of some sort and keep it in your bag or car and don't act like you pocket carry it. And if you're buying it for the hype and only use it for pictures you're doing it wrong.

The Knipex pliers wrench is amazing for bikes. I ride for exercise and you can slip those in your pocket and barely notice they're there. The nuts on a bike cant be gettin torn up so normal pliers dont work. The adjustable wrenches tend to round off the nut as well. The knipex is kinda the perfect tool in that way.

I thought this was just going to be a clickbait video, but honestly it's spot on. To much hype chasing and carrying for no reason. I carry a pair of Knipex pliers wrench (or some slip joints or linesmen if I want a change of pace for a day or two), I use them almost every single day; working on cars, bikes, gardening equiptment/power tools, or doing the most mundane shit like bending metal, prying stapes/working on fences, or just holding things. And I completely agree, most people don't really need to carry them, or the cobras. There just isn't the need. Something else I don't see the need for (I don't have one, but thought about it, and could probably make use of) is a prybar, especially the titanium ones. I always see pictures of peoples EDC, unused prybars, shiny as the day they came out of the box. I can understand wanting nice expensive toys, but really what is the point of carrying it if you don't use it. It's nonsense. I do frequent use of screwdrivers, have phillips, flathead/slotted, and what not dotted all around my house, and in my backpack, but honestly, why the fuck would you carry them for longer than you're doing the job? There is really no need, and it is weird. But the thing I detest the most, lanyards, in the very vast majority of cases, it's useless bulk that does nothing except cause trouble. Oh it's wet where you are working? Now the lanyard is soaked and sits in your pocket wet. Muddy? Yep, coat the inside of your pockets with mud and sticks into the lanyard. Sometimes blocks the knife from opening and closing, doesn't aid pulling it out of your pocket, and is annoying. Most useless gimmick in the entire EDC community.

I was guilty of many of those things mentioned then about 5 years ago I took a hard look at myself in a very critical way. One of the things that I asked myself was, do I need all of this stuff hanging off my belt and in my pocket when I'm just going around town? No I didn't. All I need was a small knife like a normal Delica, a small flashlight and lip balm. I use those three things enough that it's worth carrying them. No prybars. No bit drivers. No multi-tool. No Ti anything. No fancy nail clippers. No fancy small tape measure. No pouches on my belt. If I'm out somewhere and I need a tool I have small toolbox in my truck with a few things and in the last 4 years I've used those tools only a few times. I do like my Knipex but they are in my shop at home and at work and none get carried on me.

As someone who is a peasant: I use my pliers on a daily basis and I bought the 4 inch cobras thinking I'd carry them in my pocket everywhere and I'd be prepared anytime a nut or screw crosses my path. Save me time walking back to the truck when I forget the 8 inch channel locks. Well I left them shits at home because my pocket already holds a phone, wallet, keys, vape and utility knife. So I thought "hey, I'ma grab one of those edc pouches." Now I can carry my little screwdriver and my cobras, and why not get a bolt action pen and some pocket notebooks to write on. Now I got a cute little pouch. But now I'm thinking the 4 inch cobras look kinda small in that 5.5 inch pouch. Kinda useless when I always got bigger pliers when I'm doing a job. And since my 6 inch cobras don't fit in the pouch, let me just waste my money on some 5 inch cobras. I may never use them but that's gonna look so much better next to my 5 inch bit driver. Plus now I own half the collection. Only thing I'm missing now is the $85 titanium pry bar. It won't get used either but it's got that cool fidget thingy. I only buy new toys when I'm trying to fill a void in my life. This is how poor people spend their money. Can't cop a house or a Mercedes but I got a $5000 shoe collection type shit. My tools are worth 1k. Don't got a 401k but I got plenty of shit I don't use.

Haha you’re killing me with the Knippix. I love them, but I have one size up and I keep it in the front pocket of my sling pack, because I’m currently renovating 4 apartments (and managing 4 more. Doing construction or repairs alone I always need another hand. But I feel you, this is more about “don’t feel like you need to buy all this stuff if you truly won’t use it all the time”. I personally use construction stuff a whole lot more than my self defense, survival, medical stuff. - For me a mini ratcheting driver/socket kit, box knife, sharpies, tape measure, graph notebook, external charger, flashlight, duct tape/painters tape, hex/torq key sets, lock pick kit, pry bar, torch, east wing hammer, knipex cobra, knipex needle nose, knipex nippers, bolt cutters, channel lock’s adj. slim jaw wrench (my slim jaw homie). Gotta have the go-bag for power tools too- Milwaukee impact driver, hackzall.. I know I’m forgetting shit but who cares. But that’s my EDC based on my current life situation. When our life changes - so should our kit. And this whole long-ass comment just to say: Your EDC kit should be catered to you and not influenced by seeing what other people have in their coool little pocket drop pics. If ain’t gonna help you 10 times a day - you probably shouldn’t buy it, and if you did, maybe stop carrying it around everyday. Nobody likes unnecessary BS jabbing you in the pocket all day. Writing this down was actually helpful, cuz I definitely need a better tool organizer with a little spot where everything goes.

I don’t necessarily agree with the items (everyone will have their own preferences) but that’s the point. The “de-influencer” idea is spot-on. Get what works for you and discard the bandwagon “influencer” trash.

My EDC consists of: * pocket knife * wallet with money, a few cards, and Victorinox SwissCard * keys * keychain flashlight This is it. You don't need all that funky crap like a pry bar or screwdriver with bits. Repeat with me: I need no crap in my pockets.

Coming from a survivalist kinda prepper person, having a 550 or titancord lanyard is a huge relief cause if I’m in a place I can’t take my bugout bag or anything I still have cordage, but for the love of God stop doing it to post on IG or snap, nobody really cares about the knot, or your beads. If you are gonna do one of these things justify it
