IIRC the reason for the split colored chevrons on the top of the slate are there so that you can have a clear visual indication of a sync point (in various lighting environments) as a last resort if things go wrong or get messed up.

with wear and tear on the front surface, i wish there was a way to replace the whiteboard area. I guess they have the screen projector thing but i wonder how that affects writing on it / feel etc. With a bunch of use over time does it seem like its easy to keep the whiteboard white? The marker that deity provides, versus whiteboard markers at office depot... is that formula different? One going to keep wiping off easier over time? Thanks!

Great review man. Was wondering about this device when I saw it on IG. Pretty handy and definitely cool. That price tho! I’m sure it’s worth it but too much for my productions. Will keep it mind when I level up! 😂😅
@TylerEdwards
@TylerEdwards Год назад
Ya the price can be a barrier to entry for some and that’s where I think renting it would be a better option for some!

How do I sync 3 x Sony A7S III using time code?
@doublevisionmedialiaisons2235
Red Cameras are notorious in the sound dept for not jam sync to external devices. I notice you use red to film. Would like to hear your feedback on Red vs. tentacle, tc-1 and this new Diety slate. Would be even better to see an instructional video -as sound guys don’t often touch the camera (or navigate the menus) and cam-ops to be honest aren’t that proficient in the timecode part of cams either!

I haven’t had much issue with my Komodo. I am actually working on a video for Shutterstock Tutorials about TC. Also, deity have great tutorials on different cameras on setting up timecode.

I kinda want one because it looks professional, but honestly I fail to see how and when I would use a digital slate. 🤔
@TylerEdwards
@TylerEdwards Год назад
Haha they are indeed cool but no need to spend money where you don’t need to!
@Ickhart

Main reason for a timecode slate is to cut down on time. Metadata is saved on the files so its a simple button click or drag and drop of the file to the editing workflow. Def not necessary but for bigger productions it helps since time is money.

amazing board, fantastic review as always man! My only gripe is the fixed board, they should have made the board magnetic and offer european & blank slates, with a little groove so you can pull it off to change it, idk, really cool netherless!

@@SustainableGal they are using the wrong photo. It's a BBC style slate. I'll have a sales rep reach out to them to fix this.

ALso Question: How does the slate clean when using permanent marker (sharpie) I generally use a sharpie for dir/dop names, production names, and even scenes usually, as just the take numbers change between takes and permanent marker just holds up better between takes. Thanks. FYI the magnet in the slate (in many slates) is meant to help ensure a strong snap on the frame when you clap the slate. It guarantees a clapping sound and ensures the clap happens on a single frame versus bridging frames (usually). Is nice to keep things closed too. Also, I think a lot of slates also have colour chevrons so it's super clear when the clap has fully closed, since you can see, in many lighting conditions the exact moment of the clap. Super helpful for subframe syncing.

I haven't tried using a permanent marker; only the dry erase that ships with the SL1 and that obviously cleans really well. With the anti-reflective surface, I would be hesitant to use a permanent marker.
@Ickhart
@Ickhart Год назад
you can probably just write on white gaff tape instead of the actual slate itself to keep it clean and still use a permanent marker.
@jasonmoran5152

probably like every other slate. Dry erase marker takes it off

Piece of junk, terrible customer service. After two months the small screen on the back stopped working. I emailed support which took forever for them to get back to me, and now I've been waiting for nearly a month as to when they will ship replacement. I keep on getting the runaround and excuses like supply chain issues, etc, meanwhile everyone has this slate in stock, including distributors. People need to know that if they buy this and it stops working, they will not get professional customer service. You're just gambling $1000. I feel as if I will never get my replacement slate. They won't give an answer as to when. Everything is up in the air. Sucks. I'm bummed.

Sorry to hear about your experience. My experience with Deity (before I had a relationship with Deity) has been fantastic. It sucks that your unit crapped out on you. Unfortunately it happens from time to time. I remember when I got a brand new BMPCC4K, it died on me in the first few hours of using it. It wasn’t fun haha. Hopefully you’ll get it sorted out soon.
@willvazquez3218
@willvazquez3218 Год назад
@@TylerEdwards Yeah, I've had problems with 3 BM cameras and their customer service were very fast in responding and repairing or replacing my cameras. Deity finally gave me a clearer response last night. They said that they "should" have units to ship in beginning or March and if I wanted they offered a refund.

Way too much money. This along with other film products - the price only makes sense in comparing to other products that are overpriced. You can easily buy an ipad for that price and I know it's apples and oranges - but which would you think has more tech in it. What if the slate was hollow and you removed the actual cost of the case etc, Say even a 100 dollars - do you think that an LED screen that runs SMPTE code is worth $900 ? I don't. Over the last couple of decades I have seen many absolutely fantastic products, flounder and go by the wayside because of the pricing. If a company that builds a product is small and can't produce in big numbers, I can see the idea of selling thousands instead of hundreds ( or in some cases dozens ) as a viable business model - but in my observation - the reasonably priced products make it into everybody's camera bag - and the overpriced only make it into a few.
