I know I'm really late, but if I recall correctly, this pose is actually banned nowadays in competition. I forget why, but it is genuinely the MOST aerodynamic you can get, which is what bikers are constantly trying to achieve with different poses.
The extreme risksI presume, but I'm sure there are people who think it's against the spirit of the sport -- it's pretty easy to say someone's cheating when they aren't doing the core movements generally required.
@@CoralCopperHeadwell, it certainly feels like cheating when you pick up speed and pass everyone after doing the equivalent of turning the engine off by giving up on the pedals, so, I can't totally blame people for feeling that way
See, IDK, I'm not a competition cyclist, but it feels a little overly dogmatic to say "no using aerodynamic pose" Is it inordinately dangerous to do this? Or is it a matter of "boo hoo that guy beat me because he realized he could get his cross section as small as possible and let the hill and gravity do the rest!" It feels like the equivalent of telling that one pole vaulter they couldn't go over belly-up because it would shake up the sport too much (seriously, pole vaulting seriously changed when that guy figured out you could get more clearance going over on your back)
@@colinz226 I think it's safe to say that it's risky. It takes one guy to do it in a pack and to fall. That would be really ugly. Getting into the pose is wobbly, in the pose your center of gravity is a lot higher than usual and you don't necessarily have the stability to control the steering very well. And getting out of the pose is also wobbly. And to be fair it is also not necessary to do this pose. Eventually everyone would do it so then there is no point to having it around. Or worse if not everyone is doing it because that means they consider it too risky. So it basically becomes a gamble on your health to gain an advantage. However you put it, it is good that it was banned. Cheating in my opinion is gaining an unfair advantage by breaking rules or by acting against the spirit of the sport. The spirit of cycling is to ride a predefined track faster than anyone else on a bicycle. So as far as I am concerned, this is very much in the spirit of the sports. It's just dangerous.
I read once that it's a danger thing. If you get going too quickly yo won't be able to reengage with the pedals. That being said, if you can't reengage with the pedals then you're still going faster than you can pedal anyway. Also, the brakes slow you down, not the pedals.

Gravity is the main factor here. They are going downhill and if you let the wheels do their job without your resistance on the pedals, then the bike will go faster.

The work one does while riding a bike is 99 % overcoming air resistance and 1 % overcoming the internal firction of the bike and an infiniteismal amount of friction from the wheels on the ground. While yes it is indeed the gravitional force that leads to the accerlation, it isn't any resistance on the pedals that would lead to a deccelleration of the bike, expensive bikes, that are designed for racing, are designed in such a way, that exactly this won't happen. If that could be archived with simply removing the resitance on the pedals it would have been merely enough for him to lift his feet, which it isn't.

By faaaaaaaar the biggest factor is air-resistance. The other bikers dont pedal beacuse of "resistance on the pedals" they pedal because their air resistance is so high at those speeds , they would slow down if they don't pedal. The guy in the video just does the smartest thing and divides his air-resistance by aprox 3. Formula: F_w (Force due to Air Resistance) = C_w(streamingcoefficient) * p (density) * A * 0,5 (Surface - Area --> minimized by biker here) * v^2 (velocity. As you see, velocity goes squared into this formula which makes air resistance the biggest force at high velocities) F_w = cw * p*A*0,5*v^2 The force pulling him dowwards the hill is _ Fg (m*g(9,81 m/s^2)) * sin (alpha). With alpha being the degree of the hill. F_net would be : Fg - F_w - F_r F_r = Force from internal resistances like barings, freespin-mechanic, and the wheels on the street themself. In comparison to F_w this force is so little you can just leave it. As shown above A goes linear into it but F_w is still the biggest slowing force due to v^2 in it. If you look at the biker: When he goes flat his exposed Area is prob 1/3rd of the other bikers areas. Thus his F_net and therefore his accelearation is way bigger.

It's actually quite easy first you put your shoes at the fast tire, then slightly put more and more pressure this will create friction and slow down the bike. While slowing it down ,the paddle will also slow down with it ,allowing him to ride it agian

Addition: Said move is forbidden due to the fact it takes a massive toll on the body. He wins the race but passes out soon after and sleeps for a week. He eventually learns how to master this move without using any addition energy but 5 seasons later there’s already a bunch of other super special techniques.

If my childhood riding bikes has taught me anything, it’s that he’s never getting his feet back on those pedals unscathed So I’ve watched the full video now, and I stand corrected. He was able to get them back on without destroying his lower legs. The joke still stands though

As somebody who’s actually done that on my road bike, it takes a hella lot of core strength to hold that posture whilst flying down a mountain. But dang is it fun. You literally feel like you _become_ the scalpel slicing through the air. Very hard, but a lot of fun.
@@artsybookworm7234 I’ve only fallen oven once on my road bike when I leaned the wrong way and I couldn’t get my cleats detached from the pedals in time and I went down like a sack of potatoes. Not a fun feeling. Fortunately I’ve never crashed when going at speed on my bike. In terms of how it felt, it was like imagining yourself a bullet and all the wind went across all of you like if you were flying. If your abs are strong enough to hold that position for even 30 seconds while coasting downhill, it’s definitely an adrenaline rush. It also takes a lot of skill/balance to maintain it. Specially going fast so, unless you _really_ know what you’re doing, I wouldn’t advise trying it.
@@sing2580 Legs are heavy. Core/Tummy needs to be strong to hold up legs and balance on a small bike seat so you dont crash your bike while performing the skill shown in the video. There super dumbed down explanation. If you are wondering why the bike can go faster than a motorcyle? The cyclist is moving down an incline or a hill. Doing the whole superman pose allows gravity to the work while reducing air resistance. Smaller target/scalpel through the wind= more speed. That and a cyclist cant pedal faster than a bicycle can spin its chain and wheels. Wheels can go as fast as you want them. Human legs got a limit to them.

@@noel2369 according to me: There was a strong opposite wind, which was making higher drag force than pedaling, so instead of trying to paddle harder than that wind, he just made himself more aerodynamic, thus he achieved a slightly higher speed than others

Bro, the bike would really be hard to be stabilize when you're literally 1 milliseconds away from accident. At 90mph on a bike, a slight turn on front wheel could cause wobble effect and crashing the bike. The least pain you could get away with is maybe bleeding leg or something. It's just that hard
