Deku Is An AWFUL Main Character | My Hero Academia Analysis

I love My Hero Academia, but Izuku Midoriya, the main character, kind of falls flat for me. I don't think he's pushed enough in any human way (in ways other than fighting and physical strength) and I think he's kind of bland compared to other, more complex main characters. Here I break down his character and why I think it falls kind of flat, and how he might be fixed.

Tbh Hitoshi Shinso would make a good MC for Mha, having him would really take a deep dive into the discrimination of quirks and the wrongs of society, deku proves nothing about that because he has a “heroic” quirk (stated by Hitoshi himself)

When you brought up Midoriya's quirklessness, it reminded me of this fanfic called 'Deku? I think he's some pro'. It's part of the For Want of a Nail series. In it he doesn't receive One For All and actually goes on to become a hero without a quirk. I loved it because it seemed like the anime kinda brushes off his being quirkless after he received a quirk and the fanfic goes into detail about how hard it is to be quirkless in a society that practically revolves around quirks. The same series also has an entry where Izuku says fuck it and becomes a quirkless villain called 'Mastermind'. I actually find myself reading and enjoying these stories more than the anime in fact. And now I guess I understand why. Everyone was written well enough except for poor Izuku

Deku is someone I really used to like but my main problem is that he confirms to a society that would normally expell him. Horikoshi is someone who can build up a massively flawed hero world but he didn't flesh out these plot points. Even though Deku has stated that all men aren't born equal he follows regulation that don't help everyone. His desire to become the Nr 1 hero is a responsibility that Deku would still need to comprehend. Ever since Deku received a quirk that made him lose his uniqueness. Deku also doesn't seems to be open to reforming his villains. The spinoff manga vigilantes is actually what Deku's story should have been.

Deku has a major savior complex and it’s pretty obvious. He needs to be the savior even when is obvious others can take care of themselves. The only explanation for such an annoying main character is that the people that wrote it don’t understand the difference between a real hero and someone with a savior complex. @@assssaaasasass THIS. I always noticed how Dekus lack of self preservation due to low self esteem, combined with a savior complex, are ALWAYS rewarded. Horikoshi treats having your limbs literally twisted and crushed into a pulp like a papercut. He never follows through with the threat that, if Deku breaks his limbs a few more times, he doesnt get to keep them. Every time Deku destroys his body, he wins the fight. Every tine hes where hes not supposed to be--stain, kamino, Gentle Criminal--it end up being a good thing where he wins the fight and no one else gets hurt, abd they "couldnt do it without him" Not only that, but the adults in his life never take him to task for it. Nezu, aizawa, all might, and his mom never do more than say "nuuu stahp" a MILLION times. Theres no consequences, suspension, expulsion, therapy--nothing And then when we get the setup of Deku having a quirk thats going to destroy him, a setup that, at sone point, is going to FORCE him to change or be forever disabled...and he gets 7 other powers that fix it all, AND that he masters in like two months. Deku has great potetial. I guess Horikoshi didnt

@anonymoust6226

I hate takes like these because they're so ignorant. Like, yea fanfics can surpass the original story but that's props to the guys that made it. It's not why something is bad. They over 300,000 fanfics of mha, makes sense that some of them are written by some talented people. Second, Upload schedules for fanfics just don't exist or are not nearly as harsh as Shounen jump ones. Fanfic authors sometimes post every other month or not at all for years. If we were forced into those hours, I doubt our work would be as good as Horikoshi's. Third, and the biggest one. It's so easy to modify and change stuff as supposed to making your own. When starting out a fanfic you already have a rich, diverse set of characters that you don't have to build up for the audience to care about. If All Might was to die at the start of a fanfic, I would be upset but if that was the stat of MHA, I wouldn't give to shits. See why OC's are usually notoriously bad in fanfics now?

I think Deku is a great character, but his beliefs are never challenged giving him a chance to display character or growth. Then Horikoshi is inconsistent when it comes to the consequences with his actions. Him being good is not an issue. He’s very similar to Spider-Man and Captain America I think Deku is interesting because his heroic attributes are a result of trauma and being bullied. He has NO self worth so in his eyes the most valuable thing about him is the quirk he was given, hence why he will always destroy himself to save others.
@TheYarheeguy
@TheYarheeguy 8 месяцев назад
Agree that he is similar to Captain America, though the difference is their struggle. Steve Rogers (and I’m talking about MCU version) struggle with his environment, being in a different world than he's used to and having to move on only to discover that the people he worked with are either evil or want to do things that goes against being a hero, and he still keeps being a good person and still help people even if it means becoming a criminal. Midoriya is like the video said, the struggle of his own powers, which is not a bad thing, but there isn’t really much to reflect on society or the hero system. The closest thing we gotten is his fight with Gentle and that’s it, and sure, he did gone rogue and became a vigilante, but that’s gotten reversed pretty quickly to the point where there is no point or reason for that to happen, just checking the mark of ‘protagonist goes on a depression arc before the third act’ on their Hero's journey. I am not saying Midoriya isn’t a bad character, not good either, just poorly executed due to worldbuilding being thrown out the window.
@francjameso
@francjameso 7 месяцев назад
@@TheYarheeguy yeah I agree with that, and that was more or less my point. They’re fundamentally the same character; Deku was just utilized poorly and his struggle (with power/quirk) is not as interesting as seeing his world views challenged and having him struggle with that, like captain america This video was saying his character (altruism, selfless) was boring and a part of what made him a bad MC

Being a "nice guy" doesn't mean you have no room to grow. The only things that limit that character type are the writer's closed mind and the audience's even more skeptical perception of the archetype. Nightwing (Dick Greyson) and the Flash (Wally West) are *the* nice guys incarnated in the Western superhero media, yet they're some of the most beloved. They're morally decent, funny, and dorky, yet at the same time they're put in difficult situations where they become paranoid and act out of characters, argue with each other or question themselves, only to reunite and be better heroes and friends later on. This is how you progress the 'nice guys' by subtly shifting the 'scale': you put the characters in different sorts of challenges and corruptions that they can only overcome by being true to themselves, becoming more mature, more compassionate as well as becoming better people and heroes than they were. Contrary to many people's beliefs, being a 'nice guy' in modern society is something you *earn, maintain* and *develop,* not something you have and be done with it. Deku *does* have the definitive 'human' elements: he's an Otaku and a borderline hopeless hero worshipper. You can write countless dramas out of those qualities without sacrificing his decency: The fact that he can no longer treat superheroes like fun and cool pastime, the fact that the real world is grittier and more dangerous than what's shown on TV, the fact that his hero turns out not as great as he thought, the fact that people around him may get hurt or die because if his reckless actions, and the fact that everything he believes about being a superhero or the world is wrong, and that disappointment's what killing him from the inside. The only way Deku can become the #1 hero is to prove that he is virtuous no matter what kind of adversary he meets, not just bad guys that he fights, but also things that ideologically challenge his very core character. After all, personal virtues and ethics are the things that define a superhero, not what sort of quirk you have or how hard you can punch or kick bad guys. All in all, it boils down to Horikoshi being a bad writer. He may be capable of creating a main character that resonates with people, but he does not understand the essence behind the superhero genre or how to develop a good protagonist. He also doesn't seem to be the guy who cares that much about superheroes despite writing about them. He would rather spend time building up bad guys or framing how bad society is without juxtaposing it with the heroic standpoints and counterarguments. The way Deku turned out in the ending after everything he's done is REALLY telling about his piss poor attitude toward the character.

I think they should have given bakugou an older sibling who has close to both deku and bakugou but died protecting deku after he was 'diagnosed' as quirkless. This could help stem deku and bakugou's motivations and explain their bad friendship fallout better. Deku and baugou both trying to be heroes because of this one incident would have been intresting and a connecting factor. Plus it would also explain the defenless izuku or useless title better.

My problem with Deku has a protag is that when consider the amount of luck he had to get OFA is crazy. Like he would be dead if All Might wasn’t thete to save him when he suicide missioned to save Bakugo. Again when he tried to save bakugo with his friends, they were all fucked if the heroes didn’t show up. And don’t try to bring the “oh but he trained hard to deserve it” that’s not what I’m talking about. Deku never would have even trained to get stronger physically if he didn’t meet all might. My problem with him is that despite wanting to be the best, he never trained physically before meeting all might and afterwards despite knowing so much about heroes and training for so long he’s still reckless with his body and with other ppl’s lives. They meant a lot of it came down to luck (like the universe bends to his will) not that luck in general is bad, and yes there is something wrong with that @reem6087 . Witnessing a growth in power isn't as compelling as watching an MC grow in character and Deku doesn't grow much in that aspect. This is what I've noticed: the more compelling MCs work on their character --> they unlock their potential --> and are rewarded with strength. Deku is the opposite. He grows in strength so unbelievably quickly (it's almost silly) to compensate for his character flaws rather than just work on those flaws in the first place which unlocks his potential. Instead, he gets what he wants with almost no repercussions and even when he loses a battle, he still gets what he wants in the end (so not even a proper loss). Abusing his body to get physically strong quickly seems all show and doesn't actually have meaningful long-term consequences. With that kind of abuse, he shouldn't be able to walk. This makes him an uninteresting and sometimes obnoxious character to a lot of people. I've never once thought of him as the underdog even though that's what the show keeps implying.@@reem6087

While I agree that batman deku would have been fun, he got the power in like the first 2 episodes. Its a minor annoyance built on preconceptions. There were a lot of ways that the story could have been more cohesive. For example, Deku attempts to train but hes denied because of lack of quirk. Or perhaps his bullies find out and torment him into giving up.. He tells his mom/teachers and they do nothing + the bullying gets worse. It explains his weakness and reluctance to do anything about his situation while tying in the quirk discrimination in a believable way. Hell, you could have had a scene where he overhears his dad leave specifically because of him being quirkless, adding to his issues. Then after he gets his powers society treats him better. His bullying could have led to an antisocial and distrustful attitude about him, leading to misunderstanding and drama with class A mistaking him for being a more polite Bakugo. Or he maintains his original attitude either through a mask or his improving situation. You could have had him witnessing a child being quirkless and either ignoring it and leading to self-loathing (even better if it happends around the eri arc) or getting involved, leading to different kinds of issues like for example one of his classmates trying to let the kid down gently and he just blows up at them, the situation hitting too close to home. Bonus points if theres a suicide of a quirkless kid leadong to the reveal that most quirkless are actuallu old people since quirkless kids rarely reach adulthood. Even more bonis points if this increase coincides with Allmights rise and his unintentional deification of power based heroism based on a superpower arms race. That could lead to a cobtrast between Allmights time and dekus, where batmanesque heroes existed but allmight made them irrelevent or something. All for one could further complicate things by having exquirkless minions with the quirks of their bullies, willing to die for him. I could go on.

I'm not going to spoil anything, in case of someone didn't see that. But yeah, he might not have anything just like you said, but the reason of WHY he doesn't. He wants the public's affection that they never gave him. He wants to be a symbol a icon like all might. If he really wanted to be a hero he'd and to just help people he'd be like koichi. 11:20 Gentle is a perfect narrative foil for Deku and encapsulates a lot about what you’re saying in this section. Further down the line he faces Aoyama, where it’s revealed that he was also quirkless and that builds a whole different atmosphere. Lady Nagant was a hero who went mad due to the corrupted hero system set in stone and she teaches Deku about the imbalances of society. Read up.

When they relaunched the DCEU on animated movie, when Green Lantern thinks Batman is some vampire/metahuman like him he is shocked to learn that Batman is just a guy in a cape wearing a bat costume. This has always been peak character building of Batman since the 1930s because he is the normal man fighting against God Like threats alongside God Like colleagues. Deku was supposed to be the first quirkless hero since in MHA universe there was no such category and it would have been awesome. There are so many characters who's abilities do not give them a physical boost yet they found ways to give themselves a leg up. Nezu is the principal and he beats the students in his exam just by toppling some buildings like dominos. Night Eye trained his body like mad to supplement his quirk. He also learned martial arts and much more wielding 5kg paperweights and stamps as weapons with just his finger strength. Aizawa is pretty much fighting as a quirkless person especially if he is up against a mutant he has to take them down without so much as a knife. The potential was there yes that there are already pro heroes who fight in a quirkless style in function but no we got a whiny nerd who does nothing and everything wrong. I can forgive all that! Once he gets One For All he botches it up so badly. He wrecks his arm for what? He doesn't even train himself properly to use it without breaking his bones. He has to go to Gran Torino to learn to use only 5 % but he never really has tech or anything to support him. Basically he is trying to be an All Might clone and is wrecking his body needlessly.

One person that does the whole I want to be a hero thing, right is Shirou Emiya from why he wants to be a hero is because he wants to see happiness of helping others like he saw when Kirisugu save them from the fire of Fuuki and they are on cemented that ideal by promise to being a hero of justice as his adoptive father died he saves others to see himself. He’s utterly selfless because he’s selfish because he is the only survivor of the tragedy.huge survivors guilt. And places others before himself because of it I can’t stand when others protect him, or go in harms way for him he has more motive, more reasoning to become a hero or what it means to be a hero, then Deku that doesn’t even get started on the relation of power and theme of the entire story as it fits perfectly fate stay night is literally a story of Shirou emiya

I agree. I also hated tanjiro for this very reason. his character is one dimensional. deep hate for only the demon king, and would try to "talk" with demons even upper. but when they attacked people infront of them they get mad. ignoring the fact they ate alot more people. Tanjiro vs Daki, he actually was mad and asked if killing was ok for them, but that only happened after he saw people hurt. and even then he let them reconcile. as if they didn't almost kill his best friends and a hashira with the entire village with it. but the scene in the anime when his sister was burning gave tanjiro alot more humanity. he was choosing between his sister and killing an upper moon and saving THREE lives. we all hear him contemplating whether to go and save them or find a way to save both, but we ALL saw the choice he already made. whether it was intentional or unintentional, he chose his sister. being selfish for once, even if he's trying to save the others he never MOVED an inch from his sister. meaning he already chose to save his sister than ending a man that killed thousands.
@stackingspaghettisauce4271

I can understand Tanjiro feeling sadness or sympathy for the demons after he's already ended them because his sister is a demon and therefore he views them as more human, but yeah, trying to talk things out with beings that have clearly eaten hundreds of people is pretty stupid. I wish the mangaka gave him more hard choices. Even the one you mentioned, which I also really liked, was just waved away by the plot 5 seconds later by upgrading Nezuko again. It's like the plot saw that he was about make a morally wrong decision and just said, "Oh, let me take care of that for you." I kinda wish that he was kicked out of the Corps after the Hashira found out about Nezuko and had to fight the demons and the demon slayers trying to kill his sister. That would've been interesting

Deku for me is too perfect. He seems to have no flaws and it makes him unrelatable. Most conflict is resolved by him at the end too, and sometimes it feels like they forced him into being the resolution to challenges faced by other characters that would be far more satisfying to see them solve on their own. I think a great way to deal with "too perfect" savior type characters is to unironically kill them off. I think it would be incredible to matyr deku and have all these great side characters pick up the torch and deal with the darkness of their inspiring friend that both brought them together and that they relied on to fix everything is suddenly ripped from their lives. Maybe this could also strengthen the reliance certain characters have on one another and pull other ones apart

So, Mashle: Magic and Muscles? In that anime, Mashle is a non magical person who lives in a world where everyone has magic. The society he lives in so toxic that they wil kill anyone who is born without magic. Even if you have magic when you are born, if you get sick and it goes away you are in danger of being killed. To help Mashle in his world, his adoptive father makes him train really hard. Making him the peak of human fitness. You're wrong. Deku WAS good, up to a certain point. The most interesting thing about him is his suicidal selflessness and the fact that this is portrayed as a bad thing. At first, I kind of felt as you did about him technically being op at the start instead of going a Batman esque underdog route, but actually, him getting OFA is cool because he has to rip himself apart to use it, which is especially worrisome given his personality. Where it started going down hill is when he panicked and went back to going 100% with his arms, and this had no real consequence, even though the scene made it feel like it was gonna. When, after Black Whip, he was mastering the new quirks too easily. How he finally snapped, went vigilante to protect the school at the price of his mental and physical health, and it seems to me like we're just gonna move on from that without anyone really talking about it.

I honestly hate how they make the whole world revolve around him. Like i get it, he is the main character, we are hearing HIS story. But why does he always have to be the one to end the fight? In most of the anime he isnt even the strongest person, he is just a student. Yet he always gets nosy and jumps in as if he is the "only" saviour of the world. There honestly a lot better quirks than one for all. One for all is supposed to be just a power quirk but it was made better thanks to the quirks of previous wielders. If consider one for all alone, other quirks like todoroki, bakugou, eraser head, creati and many more seem a lot better since they can be used more strategically. All deku can do is punch, kick or blow air.

This series isn't really about a kid who's trying to become a number one hero despite it showing up numerous times: It's about how old school shonen hero sensibilities sometimes no longer work in a modern world and that leaning too hard into specific hero conventions can have devastating consequences. For example, Deku kept hurting himself because he kept following his mentor's advice of never giving up, but he started growing when he realized being a sacrificial paragon no longer works for him and that innovative thinking is the better solution. Granted, this is undermined by him receiving several new powers, but the above point still stands

This video is not good. For many reasons, but the main one is your lack of understanding for Midoriya as a character, and his character archetype. I understand that you wantan incredibly complex character, but the complexity of Midoriya is something you have to actually think about to understand. Honestly, everything about his character could be easily summed up just by watching through season 1. Throughout his entire life, he was told that he couldn't become a hero, that he wasn't special, and that he wouldn't be able to amount to much, bullied for being weak, and despite that he still tries to save people, we see this in the first episode of the anime, which is honestly something everyone in the comment section needs to rewatch. Midoriya has struggles, and character development. Not every single MC needs to be Eren Jaeger, not every MC needs to have a paradox. All Might didn't just fall from heaven and give him OFA, he reminded him of what it means to be a hero, which is why All Might saw him as worthy of One For All. We don't lose what's interesting about him afterwards, we lose the quirkless aspect of his character and are put into his next "arc", learning to hone the power of One For All properly, and not letting his idol down, and throughout season 1, we see and hear his thoughts on it. When he goes to the entrance exam, that's an obstacle that he overcomes, and it shows off his character even more, his strongest and most interesting aspect, his heart, his compassion is what makes him a good character. In a world full of pro heroes that we learn can be selfish, only care about fame, power, or money, Midoriya is one who only wants to save people, to protect people, and though he had no time at all to gain points of his own during the exam, he chooses to save Uraraka rather than gain points to pass the exam. Willing to completely throw away his dream, just to save a life, of someone he doesn't even know as well, while the other students were focused on getting their points and getting into UA. Midoriya has a paradox, and it's shown throughout the entire series time and time again with villains like Stain, and pros like Endeavor. Midoriya wants to become a hero, a true hero, one that saves people, even villains but he lives in a society that doesn't truly care about that, in a society that is full of those who care about money, fame, and power. His paradox is tested time and time again, season after season, and his paradox, his ideals are clashed with the ideals of villains, other heroes, and even the other students at UA High. Midoriya develops with the story, and the people around him develop thanks to Midoriya's most interesting part. That's what makes the arcs of the characters he interacts with interesting, that's what makes Midoriya an interesting character. Todoroki wouldn't have started his arc of becoming his own hero if it weren't for Midorya trying to save him. Bakugo would still have his ideals of "strength is all that matters" if it weren't for his interactions, and just seeing what Midoriya does through the whole series. All Might's development is directly thanks to Midoriya as well. He isn't a bad MC, in terms of an MC archetype, he's a lot like Goku, in that he causes change in the characters around him. That's only going about season 1 and 2. Season 3 he changes Kota's mind about heros and hero society. Deku constantly develops as a hero, and with how he uses OFA, like Full Cowling, Shoot Style, Air Force, his use of mobility, using his notes about his friends and such to better improve his ability to make up for the things he lacks in. Izuku Midoriya is a hero. That's his character, and his goal is driven by the most human aspect of his character, compassion. Why do you think people become doctors? Why do you think people become fire fighters and risk their lives daily? Why do you think people join the army? It's not always to get money, it's not always because it's cool, and it's not always because they want to fight. It's to protect people, to save lives, to be heroes to those they care about, to those of society, to everyday people like you, like me, like anyone in the world. He's pushed many times in more human ways than any other protagonist, and he's just 16 in the story, but despite that: Midoriya is a savior.

I do kinda agree, but I think another big thing is the lack of consequences for all the characters in general. It's not as important to this video, but does still pertain to it. Deku is meant to be a derogatory nickname, but he uses it as his hero name. I'd be okay with that if it was shown to be purely for himself, rather than because someone said it sounded nice. Have it be like how people use to use Queer as a term to mock LGBTQ+ individuals, but they decided to start embracing it as their own term as an act to empower themselves, and not because someone else brought up that it sounded nice. Still think Dekiru would've been better, but still. He was bullied horrendously by Bakugou, but still refuses to acknowledge that he isn't the best person, and doesn't really push back against him in any meaningful way, and especially not as his own person. He was told how he would have to stop using his arms, otherwise they would be damaged beyond repair, yet he still uses them in the War Arc to the point of breaking his bones again, and can still use them just as effectively as before. He needs to truly be forced to deal with the consequences of his own actions more often, just to show that he isn't infallible. Tbh I don’t like deku because of his OVERLYNICE character trope and how he believes he should stick his nose in other peoples business just because he’s their friend. I will fight to the death to defeat my dislike of characters like ash Ketchum Midoriya and Tanjiro (sometime Luffy, but it’s more of just how stupid he can be at times). And for those people who like those characters I apologize but it seemed only fitting to put this comment on this video.

Another problem with Deku is that Deku always wanted to be a hero and after hearing he doesn't have a quirk, he basically does nothing Sure, he makes the notebooks and focuses on inteligence but that's it. His physical training only starts when All Might tells Deku to start training. He wants to be a hero even without a quirk, but doesn't physically train. Batmans parents were shot and Batman decided to train his body to the limit, learn more than a hundred martial arts, detective skills, multiple languages,... Batman did all he could to become Batman. Deku wants to be a hero and after 11 years... he's still a scrawny kid

We needed an equalist movement from the quirkless. LIterally a marginalized group in the world and Horikoshi just ignores them. Even though our protagonist started out quirkless. This gets worse when the story wants to suddenly use mutant quirks as marginalized peoples. The bigger problem really is the gross amount of people with quirks. This phenomenon apparently started less than a century ago, yet within a few generations 80% of the world populace has a superpower? Not even X-men, a franchise that has mutants dating back as far as ancient Egypt (if not further), has only 2% of the entire population with an active mutant power.

Just like goku. goku doesnt really change all that much mentally throughout his series, yet hes revered. He changes piccolo for the better. He changes vegeta for the better. Deku? He changes bakugo from some dude whos just angry all the time who wants to be a hero cause as he litterally says in the beginning, fame and money. Although that changes thanks to who? Deku. Deku is a great main character. It just wasn't as painfully obvious that he changed them because they didn't constantly go back to it. I see no problem in deku, or in him getting ofa. If there was actual effort in writing an a character and a world around him. For example in the vigilant arc, there could have been multiple conflicts and a actual slap in deku face, as he sees people are not really pure and worth saving, and the main villain fucks with his mind. Or go the opposite route and make a happy history about ideals. What fucks the whole thing is that boku no hero tries to be both at once while being poorly thought out and poorly written.

Deku was liked for being the "underdog," and we all love to root for the underdogs, but now he's not the underdog anymore. Hes just a "dog" to the system. Even having gained Allmight's quirk I would have loved to see him use his "privilege" to improve the lives of other quirkless and inspire them. Its almost like he is becoming Allmight, the same Allmight who was once quirkless himself and told a previously quirkless Deku he could never be a hero without a quirk. Like the message from Deku's characterization is "you cant be a hero without power and if one power isnt enough then you can just use another." They make it seem like theyre promoting togetherness and teamwork, "no hero can do it alone," then constantly showcase Deku surpassing/bodying everyone and how he can "do ot all on his own," people who have years of experience learning their quirks. We only really notice the other characters now because theyre more interesting, not because they're getting any spotlight, nothing focused on them anyways. And sure some of class 1A has had their own arcs and family drama, but Deku was at the center of each one, yes he's the main character but if we're focusing on the Todoroki family struggles we dont really need Deku, if youre there to support your friend then support your friend not "steal the show." The manga does a better job at not completely focusing on him during some of them but its not much better than the anime. I was literally cheering for Deku during the sports festival and now... I'm not even interested, we all know "this is the story of how i become the #1 hero" so the ending is set. Its not even Satisfying when he masters a new Quirk... Cause its not a matter of "how" its a matter of "when." We watch the show and read the manga for the other characters, and we only care about Deku to see how close he is to his dream

(TL;DR at the bottom)He's in his first year of UA. What privilege does he have? He's not swaying crowds or anything, he's just a hero student. Second, i don't know where people get this idea that the quirkless are discriminated against. You can assume sure but it's all headcannon. I say this because every time someone makes fun of Deku it's because he wants to be a hero. One like All Might especially. It's never stated it's like a disability that people make fun of but that Izuku with his quirklessness still wants to be a hero. We have no idea how the rest of the world views quirklessness. Third, about the theme. Izuku wants to be a hero like All Might not just a "hero". All Might is right in saying Izuku cannot be the Symbol of Peace without a quirk because have you seen the power of a flick of One For All? All Might doesn't say "Quirkless can become heroes like me!" he says "You can become and here's my quirk to do so." Is it a bit more bleak to say quirkless people can't be heroes like All Might? Yeah, but it's realistic. See my earlier statement of a flick of OFA. Horikoshi would either have to make it that Izuku somehow becomes the Symbol of Peace while quirkless or have him change his dream. One is straight unrealistic and the other is way worse for your theme. Imagine Naruto is like I can't actually be a Hokage, I should be an advisor or something. Not motivating at all. I think it's better that we have something like "Use your chances to the best of your abilities" that MHA gives. TL;DR. What privilege does he have? Second, Give me proof the quirkless are discriminated against and it's isn't jut because Izuku wants to be a hero. I'll wait. Third, Izuku cannot be the type of hero he wants to be without a quirk. Fourth, That's better than having the theme to be to change your dreams for something realistic.

As the series went on you’re right the mangaka did a horrible job with him, and I find most of the other side characters to be way more interesting/cool. Deku has little to no growth emotionally, he doesn’t have his values questioned, he doesn’t really face or grow from his failures. It’s one emotional speech + the power of friendship and he’s completely back to normal. If you take a look at s1 Bakugo or Todoroki, they’re completely different by season 5/6 and have grown to be better people. Deku is literally the exact same as episode 1, no growth. He’s just whiny and SO pathetic… really drags the series down. Even Ochako is a female version of him, so he doesn’t even have an interesting love interest that helps him grow. He started off as boring while MHA started off as unique with high potential. By season 4 it tanked and has become one of the biggest jokes in modern anime. In defense of Deku’s character: I believe his motivations does come from a human place, idealism or childhood fantasy, as children most us would see something on TV or in the real world and be like, I wanna be that when I grow, (most likely cause it looked cool) Deku was denied and insulted for his dream for most of his life and then is suddenly given the chance to achieve it through all might. Problem is he learns that his dream job isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, he sees many of flaws within this hero society: selfish Heroes only caring about popularity and status, the failed trainees that slip through the cracks of the system, and most of all how society creates its own villains. Through these experiences he gains a wider perspective on his dream of “being a hero to everyone.” He realizes that it’s not just the citizens and even other heroes that need saving but the villains too. Most of them people that got screwed over by society similar to him, it doesn’t excuse their actions by any means, but by learning the stories of the victims he can help make changes to society to slow of stop the creation of more monsters, that’s how he’ll surpass allmight, whose presence dissuaded monsters, Deku reforms them and stops them before they show up. And briefly on the topic of class 1A, the series has been clear in showing that society can’t stand on the back of one pillar else the entire thing crumbles when that pillar is gone, thus the importance of other rising heroes that Deku has trained with and inspired. Thanks for reading if bothered to.😂

Except whatever you said is either never expanded upon, more than maybe a chapter or is left too shallow. You can argue his motivations come from childhood fantasy, but the issue is after seeing the good and the bad side of the hero society he never questions it. The most we know about his motivation is that he is inspired by that one video of allmight, we never get to know why that video is something that he holds in such a high regard other than he saved people...okay? And what made him think unconditional heroism is cool considering his ass was bullied. Hell kirishima has more well developed reason to believe in unconditional heroism than deku, bakugou's reason for loving allmight was fleshed out better than deku. The problem is even after getting allmight's power and seeing the darker sides of hero society, his motivations are never questioned and his ideals are never once challanges The story tries to sell the fact that hero society can't be supported by one piller, and then proceeds to have the entire freaking war arc centred around super deku and hyper shiggy. Sure there are fights going on here and there by its beyond freaking obvious that they simply don't matter in the grand scheme of things as whoever between deku and shiggy wins can and will single-handedly turn the tide of battle.

For me I think It's all about the emotions of a child What deku experience is just because of his childhood like 1. Mom not encouraging him to become hero 2. Friends making fun of him being quirkless 3. Bakugo bullying him in childhood All he wanna do is to save people like the no.1 hero But the society broke his heart like this When he got chance to become hero he took it And about why he didn't questioned about bad side is because whom will he tell this , to public. @@assssaaasasass yep the story kind of falls apart under any nitpick. Hes not really a vigilante in the arc at all. The best way to tell if a story will be long lasting is if it can stand the test of time, aka still be good even after you've had time to relook at a piece of work & see if it all adds together correctly and doesn't have too many plot holes. A good writer would make a world & work to insure if their are as few plot holes as possible or if their are, they are either fixed or at least retconned so the story can still make sense and not break in on itself. My hero is facing this right now. For instance the mirio reveal in the arc just before vigilante was rushed and not set up well. Sure they had some of the steps in place but it just fell flat upon rereading the scene. He shows up does nothing then leaves the story like nothing happened next chapter. You'd think the writer would take more care and maybe save that moment for another arc or at least have mirio have a important role going foward, or atleast have something in between showing the progress was already very close and now a flashback just after he returns does not count its just lazy. Of course he just adds it in to generate hype then forgets about mirio ever existed after he got his powers back.

Some irl individuals are mentally lacking with particular drives which could very well have helped them, but doesn't cross their minds. I just find it nice to see a good one track mind character in a similar vein to Goku. Though as someone has pointed out, it could very well be the fact of idealism or childhood fantasy. But again, all the issues that you can point to where it all started was with Shonen Jump. We could have had the Anime Batman, but didn't because they said that it wouldn't be as cool. We could have had a decent story line where we learn about the world and see where things could have gone, have him use his mental ability to win fights instead of punch/kick to win. But with how Shonen Jump forces the artist to basically suffer under the wight of deadlines, it's hard for Horikoshi to actually put enough effort without making things feel like there hand-me-down's. And that's where I think we will need to focus more on.

this actually makes me angry, "anime batman" has so much more potential to be an interesting and cool show.

In my experience, Deku's main problem is his likability. It wasn't as easy to like Deku as it was to like other characters like Naruto, Asta, Natsu, or even Tanjiro. Deku isn't really that charismatic compared to other shonen protagonists. Those characters personalities and backstories made them more magnetic. Deku's personality in season 1 is understandably weak and meek, it's somewhat annoying, but after that, he's kinda uninteresting as a person. Iruma-kun from Mairimashita Iruma-kun is a lot more likable despite having similar personality traits like being a pushover. however when Iruma acts weak are less out of fear but more out of kindness. Deku just doesn't feel as human as other characters from anime.

It's been a while since I've seen the anime but man does this video hit the feelings i've had about the series. At the beginning of MHA I had the same idea that you had of Deku becoming a Batman-like character fighting with his brain instead of brawn, and they even had the roots established with the hero support course being brought up as well as a crazy pinked haired tech girl who had way more likeability and personality compared to the gravity girl Ochako(she peaked during bakugo fight).

My main issue is I don’t see what makes him different than other heroes other than his power which was given to him out of sheer luck. Like MHA tries to tell you he deserves it because of how he ran in to save Bakugo but seriously? Knowing the students in mha is the anime trying to tell me they wouldn’t have done the same in Deku’s situation? I don’t see what makes him different, as far as I am concerned MOST students have the same attitude as Deku and would give their life to save another. Yes I have read the manga and personality wise I still don’t think he is different from the other students

I get what you mean but that's why we have students like Iida, Ochaco, and Shoto who don't start off by wanting to become heroes for the reason Izuku does, to truly save people and be an actual hero. All the students we see do have heroic attributes but most if not all have other motives, such as ochaco doing it for the money and shoto doing it to prove his dad wrong (neither of which are bad or immoral but neither are truly heroic.) This is also why Stain is so important as he points out the need for fame, money and popularity in most heroes. This is why Deku is different, something Stain and others point out and it's what made All Might different
@pipercharms7374
@pipercharms7374 Год назад
@@driplord7139 Even if their motives weren't pure, they still would have run in to save Bakugo, most of them would, which is what made All Might choose Deku, however I don't believe EVERY SINGLE student in that class had unpure motives in the begining, my point being Deku is not unique despite the show trying to tell us this many times, yet it simply isn't true. If the ENTIRE hero school was watching that Slime fight and no one stepped in to help Bakugo, then yes, Deku would be uniqie out of them, but we all know that wouldn't happen.

@@pipercharms7374 Good point but I think it's also the fact he was quirkless and was the ONLY person to step in even in the presence of not only civilians and capable heroes, but also the NUMBER ONE hero. When Bakugo asks why deku was chosen and not him All Might says because bakugo already had a strong quirk, deku had the heroic spirit but didnt have a quirk. Deku doesnt realise it but his own initial quirklessness is what makes him unique and gives him the necessary perspective to be such a great hero (same with all might being quirkless). Deku can see everyone else for how amazing they and their powers are, but always sees himself as inferior, (something that would benefit his character a heap if he himself addressed it, hopefully horikoshi decides to explore it)
@pipercharms7374
@pipercharms7374 Год назад
@@driplord7139 That still in my opinion doesn't make Deku unique, there are still other people who are quirkless in this world, did All Might go around checking if every single one of them had the mindset to be a hero? No. He chose Deku because Deku was lucky enough to have an encounter with him beforehand and Deku was there at the right time, just running out to try and save someone and being quirkless, shouldn't be the way to pick someone for the most powerful quirk ever? For me it felt pretty unfair that Deku had only a summer of training, picked for the most powerful quirk under lucky circumstances, and surpassed all his classmates, some who had been training all their lives and some had as pure motives as Deku, some who eventually didn't at first but eventually would be JUST as worthy. I just don't see the students in the class any less worthy than Deku. In my opinion the kid who could float through stuff, can't remember his name, was just as worthy as Deku, not saying he should have got it instead but I just did not buy how the anime was trying to tell me, only Deku was good enough and worthy for it. In my opinion there were plenty of worthy candidates and Deku is not special, yes he was quirkless but it's not like Deku had any control over that, it even feels a little annoying that a allmight would use something at birth that Deku had no choice over, to pick him for the most powerful quick, like why should any kid who had a quick be disqualified in allmights opinion? Its not their fault, they were born with a weak or powerful quirk, and Allmight tried to frame it as "I gave something to Deku to let him step in the ring" with the other people with quirks, I'm like no, Allmight you gave Deku something that would help him become a world champion IN the ring, that eventually no one could surpass, thats VERY different! Theres a difference in helping someone become equal in a skill with their peers and helping and giving them something that would make them surpass their peers and become the "strongest" ever.

I’ve never thought about If Deku went the Support Hero and honestly it’s an amazing idea. He could’ve been on the same level of Saitama in the MHA verse. Like during the forest when he took on muscular it could’ve had even more weight as we see this support hero take on a villain as strong as that. He could’ve gotten control over his quirk much sooner and we could see him control how much power he has, or see him get rid of the restraints. Maybe limited people know how strong he is so everyone seeing Shigi try to take this support hero would be cool and Bakugou taking on AFO would’ve had more weight. Maybe he becomes a support hero because he felt like he didn’t deserve OFA, but eventually has to go to the front lines you know?
