Everybody always disses Iida when he says he would have done the same thing (rescued Urartian) had it not been an exam. But, he absolutely would have. He’s a bit of a straight man. The only thing more important than rescuing people to him is following the rules. The school’s not going to let people flat out die. He’s also really smart. I like how he started deducing the possibility of unstated rules. He turns out to be a fun character.

So, Best Jeanist actually is a reference that you two are missing, and it isn't spoilery! There is a fashion competition in Japan where people specially model denim jeans. The winner is named the "Best Jeanist." Also, fun nugget, the name for U.A. doesn't stand for anything. It is actual a pun on the Japanese word for hero, champion, great man, etc. In English letters it would be eiyū, or a - u. So, reverse that and you get yū ei or U.A.

I know high schools having outlandish budgets is kind of a meme in anime, but in MHA/UA's case I don't think it's too surprising. Consider that Heroes are essentially Celebrity-Athlete-Cops, and UA is the most prestigious school with a dedicated Hero track in all of Japan.

To go from being quirkless your entire life to having one of the most powerful quirks there is definitely must be a jarring experience.

"Best Jeanist" is a pop culture reference. It's the name of a fashion makeover show in Japan that was popular at the time this was made. Montana's instincts were correct. I love that mom is just as excitable and likely to cry as her son.

One thing I really appreciate about this episode is the fall sequence. A lot of shows like to pretend like someone can just land after falling out of the sky with no risk, but for Deku, that's a real concern that we didn't really expect Edit: I made this comment before you just said the same thing 😐

The thing I love most about MHA is how HUUUUUUUGE the fights are. They let multiple episodes and cover SO MANY CHARACTERS and yet you never really struggle to keep track of what’s going on and where everyone is/who everyone is with

OFA is a one-of-a-kind power with MANY unknown facets and a TREMENDOUS amount of energy under its hood. Considering it gets stronger with every pass, that tells us it is a stockpile accumulation of some kind. Which are of course many in number but none as complex. Biggest thing to note is Deku has NO control, and BLASTS THROUGH A MASSIVE ROBOT. But for some reason when you compare, it has NOTHING on All-Might being able to create enough wind to change the weather. So, one has to wonder exactly what did All-Might pass to Deku? Because even THAT is not a simple answer. In fact there is so little about this power that doesn’t have a thousand questions attached. And the more you ask, the more complicated it gets. Also, to explain what happens to Deku when he fires off OFA, the energy is so tremendous when he flexes, he blasts off all the skin on his arm, along with bone fragments, and muscle tears. And while all quirks have downsides to overcome, OFA trumps ALL of them. Would help if Deku had oh, I don’t know, a master that teaches him how to use the same power. And based on how All-Might responded when he saw Deku performing in the test, HE KNEW this was LIKELY at the VERY least. It’s genuinely painful to imagine just how little preparation was done. Uraraka is too sweet for words being willing to put everything into saving the one who saved her, while her whole lifelong dream was on the line. And she was willing to throw it all away for him (or half. Take your pick.) because she took ONE look at his power and knew he could’ve outdone her. But she at no point really brings up his destructive power like everyone else because that honestly doesn't even matter to her. She just wants to know he’s going to be ok. And that is just perfect for a hero. She’s too good. And Deku has never experienced this kind of kindness and support. And that’s…kinda sad. Iida is engine leg man. While he’s…kind of a jerk this episode, and he COMPLETELY misinterpreted Deku’s pure desire to save Uraraka as thinking of other ways to pass. He quickly gets through that. He made that stick up his butt into a third leg to use as a stool to sit on. (But I do have to admit that his power is freaking sweet, and he’s well-disciplined even if short sighted. And it would be hilarious if his glasses actually were for near sightedness. And yes, this show would ABSOLUTELY go that far for details.) Honestly can’t really go into depth of the other MANY characters seen around. There’s a 4th wall breaker staring at every camera and a guy with six arms fused in 3 ways, soooo don’t assume they are just there. But rest assured they do not stay in the background. I do also want to say about the test itself being incredibly smart. People didn’t work together in the test but on-the-fly teamwork is essential for being a hero. You support and help not just civilians but also each other to keep more people and yourself safe. And if you need to be told that rescuing people is a priority as a HERO, there’s something genuinely wrong. And Deku just puts it ALL on the line just to save lives which is what he wants more than anything. He wants people to feel safe when he shows. But the reality is, people are actually often freaked out by out of nowhere genuine selflessness. There’s always some kind of extra goal or ulterior motive assumed at every juncture. You REALLY have to earn such a trust of safety. And whether it’s because there is a lot of jerks with 2 faces out there or what, but this confuses the heck out of the naturally selfless like an empath. (This is more my interpretation as someone who lived near identically to Deku in high school in retrospect.) Also just to sell one last point, this may be a high school, but this is the equivalent of skipping high school and going straight into college to enter UA. For reasons we will get to. The hero occupation has WAYYYY more depth than you would first assume.

*slight spoilers for the episode* The U.A. Entrance Exam at first glance is really biased towards those with flashy, heroic Quirks. I don’t remember if applicants were able to bring any weapons but even with a bo-staff or a sword, dealing with robots is not easy. It shows how much harder those with Quirks unsuited for fighting robots have to work to enter U.A. Good thing there are Rescue Points, so there’s still hope for them. Or they can just get creative with their Quirk, since in later episodes we see characters with Quirks that I can’t really picture doing much against robots.

Supporting my thesis from last video about how -Deku’s soulmate- the girl who helped Deku left an impression on him not because she’s a girl that talked to him but because she was kind, when he doesn’t know her name he doesn’t call her “Cute Girl” or “Pretty Girl”. He calls her the “Nice Person”. He doesn’t even factor in that she’s a girl. I’m not saying there was no physical attraction involved, because there clearly was, but from the start this relationship wasn’t just a “male MC and female friend exist, therefore romance happens”, there’s substance to it. More on that later. Ah, the quintessential shounen exam. Putting a bunch of teens in a location filled with enemies and danger with no apparent regulation or precautions. Complete with a giant robot in the end! A giant robot who almost crushes Deku’s crush. You know something is about to happen because “You Say Run” starts playing. And there’s no better track to highlight Deku using One For All for the very first time, complete with his very first Smash! Not gonna lie, coming back to it, I can’t help but feel like a proud parent. And you know who else is a proud parent? All Might. Watching his -son- pupil wreck a robot to save someone, even if it’ll cost him the exam. Because as All Might says, the most important qualification of a hero is the spirit of self-sacrifice. And Deku sacrificed… a bit more than potentially the exam. I _could_ take this opportunity to go on about another thematic aspect of One For All I love. But I honestly think it’ll be better to take a deeper look at this specific aspect after we’ve seen more of it. So for now, let’s talk about power escalation. Having Deku start the show able to use 100% of his power to the point that his body can’t handle it is pure genius. This kind of protagonist is all about starting out weak and getting strong over time. So the most logical way to go about it is having them start with a weak power and gain more powers (or strengthen the one they already have), throughout the story. But here, Deku can use his full power from the start. But it’s so much power, his body breaks when he uses it. So the question isn’t “How can Deku make this weak power strong?” but rather, “How can Deku work around this super strong power without damaging himself?” The end point is still making the weak protagonist strong, but the execution is almost like an inversion from the usual path. There’s nothing wrong with the more typical way, mind you, but it’s yet another instance of Kohei Horikoshi taking a classic trope or formula and adding just a little twist to it to make it fresh again. Back to this episode. Once again, people’s judgment is backwards. The examinees suddenly think Deku is cool because they saw he actually had a powerful Quirk. They had no qualms with mocking him when they thought he was just some random kid, but when he reveals his power, suddenly everyone admires him. The only one who realized that he did that to save Nice Person despite having no points is Glasses Guy. The fact that he admired Deku’s impulse to save someone rather than his power proves he’s not a jerk, just really serious about the exam. Also, thank God for Recovery Girl. Thanks to her, U.A. has an excuse to do shounen stuff and be a safety hazard without getting shut down, and Deku can break as many bones as he likes. Not that he’d do that, after all, Deku is a very reasonable person, of course he knows NOT to break his bones whenever he feels like, right? RIGHT? Fast forward a week later, and we find out Deku inherited his adorable worrywart genes from his mom. And just like him, Mama Midoriya is a national treasure that must be protected. That pause before All Might says _“IF that was all there was to it!”_ is such a troll move! But what matters is that he gives me another opportunity to talk about the often-ignored details of the shows’ best couple: Of course, it’s really kind of Uraraka (gonna start using her name now), to try and give Deku some of her points, and shows that she also has that heroic self-sacrifice trait. And of course Deku is moved by this gesture, but there’s also some easy to miss subtext. Because as he’s watching, Deku remembers two quotes: Bakugo saying _“What the hell can you do?”_ after learning he wants to go to U.A., and Death Arms saying _“There was absolutely no reason for you to put yourself in danger.”_ after he ran to save Bakugo. And then Uraraka says, _“He saved me!”_ There was something Deku could do, and there was a reason for him to put himself in danger. He saved someone. He even inspired her to act heroically too and sacrifice some of her own points to help him. Like Deku himself notes, the situation is similar to when he rescued Bakugo, with him running toward danger to save someone despite the risk to himself and inspiring someone else in the process. The spirit of a hero. Uraraka is the first person besides All Might to recognize that in him. And it’s also what gets him into U.A. Speaking of heroism, there’s an All Might quote in this scene I also really like. He says it right after saying something cheesy: _“Call that lip service? Bring it on! This is a job that requires risking one’s life to put that lip service into practice.”_ Nowadays, superhero media tends to either crack jokes at how stupid and ridiculous the concept of superheroes is, almost telling the audience not to take them seriously, or is really dark and edgy because they want to be taken seriously, and people seem to think that just because a work is colorful and lighthearted, it’s automatically shallow and doesn’t have anything to say. This is a problem all throughout modern sci-fi and fantasy. Many speculative fiction has become scared to be sincere out of fear of being called cheesy or childish. But My Hero Academia? It recognizes that superhero stuff is full of sappy and feel-good speeches and fully embraces it. It knows its roots and is proud of them. Ultimately, MHA is a love letter to the superhero and shounen genres. And I love it for it and for being so sincere. That line also makes a comeback in later arcs, so I thought I’d highlight it.
