@@CuzImAzzI never thought I would see a song about the crisis of social apathy being described as "shallow", but here we are I guess. What made you think of the song as shallow? Do you think Olivers Army by Elvis Costello is shallow too? What would constitute a meaningful song for you? Genuinely curious.
@@CuzImAzz I can kind of see your point. But this song has always spoken to me of the importance of being present in your life, and caring about society. The line "American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing" really hits hardest for me, society places so much value on intrinsically worthless things (no hate on Van Gogh, but I think even he would disapprove of the amount of money exchanged for one of his paintings) whereas even human life is not valued as much as the almighty dollar.
I’m a musician and this is one of my favourite songs. Also pink is massively underrated she has an exceptional voice and I know I couldn’t sing and perform a full circus act!
Me and my best friend got wasted and played this song on repeat for a whole night. He's dead now and only I remember it. I can't help but be sad listening to this. Miss you Lyndon
Shit when you lose some one! Don't no you but you had a special friend!! Most don't get that! How lucky you are to share that time ♥️♥️with this track.
Agreed, a superb acoustic song with poignant lyric and easy tempo. But stand the test of time? Time is relative... That this species and most others are running-out of... Maybe some will be playing this song in a decade or so, but most humans alive then will be too preoccupied trying to survive.
Do telephone exchanges still click? 🤷 Do secretaries turn off typewriters? The irony might be that the resurgence of vinyl means more needles returning to the start of the song. 👍👍👍
I mean the themes are timeless, not a lot of secretaries turning off typewriters nowadays, and how many kids these days would know how or why a "needle" would return to the start of a song?.
All our ends are tragic. It what we do while living that matters and a paradox in that too. I think if we can love a song in life, that's all that matters.
Ran away to America in the 90's to escape the Poll Tax - one night I walked over a bridge on the I CW and there was someone in the booth who's job it is to open the bridge for boats. They were just sat in there with a little TV and snacks. This song sprang to mind, just mind boggling that you could sit in a booth all night as a job. In the film 'Benjamin Button' he does it amongst other nocturnal distractions. Strange world!
Was in a mental health ward, and this wonderful woman played and sung this on guitar and it pretty much summed up how we were all feeling. Timeless memory.
Was singing this in Edinburgh city centre in 2017, a guy aged about 17 years was crossing the square, he stopped...listened, turned, looked at me and threw his clenched fist up✊🏻, held it there for a couple of seconds, smiled and nodded, then went on his way. That's why I do it - because that might happen, songs like this touch people. It's my privilege to echo these musical geniuses in some small way.
Tell tale of common middle aged people's lives before internet, cellphones, and all the madness going around everywhere these years, beautifully put into words...
When the darkness gets you, these lyrics become more poignant. I’m ok right now, but I’ve been to the dark place. If you’re in that dark place right now, just hold on and know that it gets better. You might feel like you’re the only one going through it. You’re not. Don’t act so special! Tell a loved one or friend how you feel. It’s ok not to be ok.
I too was in that dark place. And in the depths of despair, my Saviour Jesus Christ, showed Himself to me. Hope itself is like a star - not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity. The Lord's mercy often rides to the door of our heart upon the black horse of affliction. John 3:16-18 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
The tricky part of sinking into the blackness is that it shackles you, throws a gag round your mouth, and iron bands around your heart. When you are down in the darkness, it is the hardest time to open up to someone.
Justin Currie wrote some classic songs and Del Amitri deserve more recognition than they got . Nothing Ever Happens Driving With The Brakes On Kiss This Thing Goodbye Spit In The Rain To name but 4 - fantastic band .
Del amitri Nev got the recognition he deserved for the music he sings is out of this world...1989 I was 17....I can't believe how fast the years hav gone! who's listening in 2022?
My favourite line: "computer terminals report on the values of copper and tin, whilst american businessmen snap up van goghs for the price of a hopsital wing...." One of the finest Scottish bands ever 🥰
We're have the years gone,I can remember every word of this hauntingly beautiful song it was always in my mind through long years of depression, that cold empty feeling that slowly eats you alive, now I have two amazing daughters and fantastic wife who has been through some very tough times with me and in her own life ,the depression is still there its like a dark shadow but it doesn't control me anymore some days are better than others but I'm still here ,still in the game and still trying to be the best person I can be I haven't come this far only to come this far
There are so many people here on RU-vid searching for music like this. People who will never hear. "And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow."
I loved this band in my youth Before l had was married had kids and got a mortgage. It seems like yesterday. It makes me sad as l am 60 this year and it just seems like yesterday. I am Scottish l loved Del Amitri , and Deacon Blue . It was good times. Live for today l suppose the message is.
Deacon Blue is awesome...Real gone Kid raises my spirits, also a bit of Big Country, actually simple minds. Wow...Scotland produced amazing acts in the 80's/ early 90's!
@@mwnciboo l have seen Deacon Blue in the Caird Hall in Dundee twice. Extra special being their hometown. Met the guys in Big Country in a recording studio somewhere up North, can't remember but it was in a big country house(no pun intended). My ex husband did the lighting and effects and he was there with another band. Good times for sure.
Indeed, I am 50 and regret the wasted time and not appreciating the years gone by. It is 30 years today since Margaret Thatcher resigned, one of the most dramatic events of my lifetime. I remember the sense of shock so well- one of those events when you know where you were. Nothing ever happens highlights and condemns the society she created- three decades later ( over four since she was elected), UK society is deeply fractured and the economy in tatters. Her legacy.
Prophetic. This played on the radio yesterday and the Radio voice said: "What a sweet song", with absolutely no irony. Has the 'burning of synagogues at six o'clock' been forgotten? Is the needle returning to the start of the song?
" ..... and they'll burn down the Synagoguesat 6 o'clock & we'll all go along, like before". How true is that line in the present insanity post October 7th, 2023.
When I first heard this song I was 19. It opened something inside me only music can do. A few years later I was on stage playing my own songs with a band on my acoustic guitar. I'm still playing now and 52. It's been a long time old friend see you soon x
First heard this whilst living in Germany in early 1990. In those days, a lot of early afternoon German TV revolved around educational programmes. Vividly remember one show dissecting the lyrics, and it moved me deeply then. The song stands up to scrutiny 30+ years later as a testament to human inertia in the face of monotony and corruption.
Classic singer / songwriter..they can’t play and perform with other musicians. Jewel is a classic example and this sound is similar. I’ve worked with them, there is no telling them...ego or Aspergers....
They were too good! Music Industry doesn`t want to support small, underrated bands like Del Amitri. They want to earn millions of dollars with "Stars" like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez etc.
Chris Evans played this on the R1 Breakfast show. When it finished he said something like "After the 7.30 news I am supposed to come back with (some manufactuerd pop hit)". He came back from the news and cued this back in. I imagine he got a rocket for that, but We'll Played Chris.
This was an MTV fave back in the late 80's so it brings back good memories. I remember camping alone at Buttermere in the Lake District while the wind and rain howled. I was cold, wet and miserable and this song was playing on my transistor radio. Half way through the song the batteries faded and died leaving me in silence in the dark. Luckily no one was there to hear me weep.
What a superb song. The lyrics tell us who we are, what we allow. Why humanity is broken, that we are divided. Also the sound on this track is outstanding, fantastic production.
"They'll burn down the synagogues at six o' clock and we;ll all go along like before". Very thought provoking and slightly terrifying. Wonderful lyrics.
yes, complaints about repetitive tv and acquisitions of art by american businessmen always eventually turn into attempted genocide. thanks for accidentally exposing how fucking retarded this song is
@@christinecumiskey5304 I'm angry there aren't more repeats on tv and I'm from Manchester too. British telly is shite at the moment, which is why I'm always on RU-vid
Lol, am from Salford but we are all Greater Manchester now which annoys Salfordians :). I love that line in this song, in fact I loved this group and their music at the time.
How on earth could anyone turn those lyrics into a melodic and infectious song. That’s some artistic flair. Brilliant blast from the past! Sorry to hear he has Parkinson’s disease. May his journey be of ease!
Best "pointlessness of life" song ever... And hearing the lyrics now, whilst technology has changed a few things ("secretaries turn off typewriters" would be "secretaries close down their laptops" or something similar now, 35 years on), we still sing along like before regardless... The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Closed circuit cameras in department stores, shoot the same movie everyday. And the stars of these film neither die or get old, they survive constant action replay. Brilliant, one of the best Albums to come out of Scotland. Can't believe this was the 80's, albeit late 80's, like the Stone roses. Makes my teenage years even better , go you Dancer 🤘
One of my very favourite songs ever. Can't believe this is almost 30 years old. From an era before the internet and when even mobile phones were an expensive rarity. Wonderful days!!
Remember when secretaries still shut off something called typewriters ? No, not the keyboard on yer phones... Meh, all this will be forgotten as soon as next thing comes along, some mess resulting from brxit, for those lving in UK. To the rest of us, t will be long gone, like the days people had to go down London subway shelters to hide from an actual War
Love this timeless classic, Post office clerks put up signs saying "Position Closed" And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats And janitors padlock the gates For security guards to patrol And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink While the married ones turn on a chat show And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow "Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore", Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go And by five o'clock everything's dead And every third car is a cab And ignorant people sleep in their beds Like the doped white mice in the college lab And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we all sing along like before And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there The Martians could land in the car park and no one would care Closed-circuit cameras in department stores Shoot the same movie every day And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed Just survive constant action replay And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we all sing along like before And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow And bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs While "Angry from Manchester" writes to complain about all the repeats on TV Computer terminals report some gains in the values of copper and tin While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs For the price of a hospital wing And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we all sing along like before And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock And we'll all go along like before And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.
Was so moved by this song in 89 I was 19.... Powerful message and wonderful words I thought the world was ending Then I played Del Amitri Let’s kiss this thing goodbye Then I felt better cos I went to Italy for 4 months in the summer Good days Better nights Summer 90... Always Amore❤️🥺
