you took me back to the days working in the shop while you told that Merkin story. the things I heard in there.... the unspoken understanding that people can say what they want without being censored in a fly shop is a gift.

Boy does that bring back memories. Permit, bigger ones for tarpon, redfish even caught snook on them. I would lift the tail a little and spread the feather some. And I always used epoxy instead of head cement on my saltwater flies. 30 years of saltwater fly fishing and that was one of my go to flies. Now I can’t see and I have to make # 18 flies for trout. Lol

Your permit story reminded me of swinging for steelhead.... "the fish of a thousand casts". Before I had even caught one, I had put hours and hours of time in, many days on the water. I went one day with my girlfriend at the time, someone who didn't care about fishing at all. On her very first cast she hooked and caught a freaking steelhead. I just about quit fly fishing altogether. Thankfully I matured and moved on (from her and the incident)!!! lol
