Before auto tune crap, we had true, pure vocals like these. Along with some of the best keyboard ever. The guitar and keys at the beginning give me chills every time.
ELO ---Super famous group--one member said and forget who but in an interview he said dels voice was so strong that in a warmup he did not even need to mic up.I think it was jeff lynne
I remember in Junior High school singing his songs and all the girls at the dance on Friday nights just went nuts to hear his songs, the guy was good. I'm 72 years old now and this is the first time I heard about him dying, I'm sure he's missed by more than I can count. RIP Del Shannon.
This always cracks me up, a man who didn’t like dancing and being away from his guitar, pulls it off with his sweet Sense of humour, a true gentlemen. .
I was fortunate enough to see him live in concert once during the early 1980's. One of my guitar teachers played guitar for him during the show. Five octaves under total control is one heck of a vocal feat. Most singers are lucky to have three.
@@bonkeydollocks1879 like I said, he’s singing live as this rendition of Runaway sounds quite different to any other version that Del Shannon has done. If he was miming, they would simply have used the original studio recording.
@@rogerauclair1670 you're still wrong no matter how many times you say it, Where's his mic? He's walking around too, where is his mic? He is miming to a prerecorded track done before the performance
lenspaulding why dont you shut the fuck up, if you're to busy shoving your own head up your ass to find something better to do, then you dont, even deserve to interact, with the human race, once again, please fuck off
I have no idea on how or why you could find Sha Na Na entertaining! They are an embarrassment to our great Country. Some of them, after their very brief careers, wound up working in the fast food industry!
This lenspaulding character can only dream of being on Sha Na Na. They arent exactly representative of anything real today but the life they DID represent, especially summers in Bensonhurst and Flatbush, with all the doo woppin going on. After 1955,it all came on the radio. You had your girl in the back seat down at Canarsie pier and the radio on low...it just happened in those days. Kids of today will never really know music. Sorry lenspaulding.
Del Shannon was always the greatest in this video he looked fantastic. Any show that he appeared on it was appreciated by his fans. Sha Na Na was glad to have him on their show. Del also spoke like the way the rest of the gang did he knew how to blend in with them.
This must be the show where he "had to do a dance or something" and he was´nt to happy about it, as he said "I´m a singer not a dancer" in the interview with Bob Costas, Thanks for sharing this . I Still Love You Del,caro
I was very pleased to be a friend of del and his wife Shirley sent 3 week,s at his home northridge l,a i cried my eyes and still do sometimes ach dekt rip and thank you for your friendship love you
@sportshistorybuff The given reason is a pretty standard one: He suffered from depression. He was actually on something of an upsurge, there was talk of him joining "The Traveling Wilburys: after Roy Orbison's death, and retro rock was on an upswing in the late 1980's. He was 55 years old, a well known difficult and dangerous period for males suffering from depression. Who can ever know why, but R.I.P. Del Shannon, and thank you for one of the great classic songs in the history of rock.
I always loved Sha Na Na ! Their show was great ! Those were the good olde days where music was really great ! Not like the RAP CRAP that came much later on ! PEACE 👍👍👍☮️☮️☮️
What I read in the news was that 'no one was interested in his music anymore. He wrote many songs but no company was interested in publishing or recording them. He was very depressed...One of the reasons why he killed himself.
He recorded an album right before he died that I bought that had some songs he wrote on it and a few remakes like a song he wrote that Chad & Jeremy recorded on it "I Go To Pieces" that was produced by Jeff Lynne.
+jessie james Del was actually on an upward swing in his career. He was tapped to replace Roy Orbison in the Travelling Wilbury's. His remake of Runaway, used in the Crime Story tv show, garnered enough attention to keep him booked with live gigs. Jeff Lynne had produced a few things for him, and that likely would have continued. I've always heard he was very professional and dependable, had a good work ethic. I've also heard he had struggled with depression for years and years. I guess it just finally caught up to him.
Produced by Tom Petty. As a matter of fact, it was during the production of that album that Tom noticed Howie Epstein, who at that time was Del’s band leader and right hand man.The Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair left the band and when Tom was working on the album he realized just how talented Howie was as and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. The rest is rock and roll history. It is said that Del was none too happy about Tom making off with his right hand man and a riff opened between Tom & Del that cooled off after several years but Tom said in many interviews that he believes it may have played a part in the mental degradation of Del before his death. Either way all 3 men….Tom, Del & Howie are reunited again in that great gig in the sky and I hope they are jamming together again and making the music Gods happy with their talent.
This video, especially once Sha Na Na starts dancing, has got to be every gay man's dream come true. I'm sure gay guys espcially enjoy Sha Na Na starts running in place during Runaway.
Look up more Sha Na Na videos... and comments... you'll see this was and still is a beloved part of music history. It was goofy, slapstick, innocent and pure in comparison to the smut passing for entertainment now. No auto tune, no cursing, no sexual acts... just simple fun. So YES people did watch this. Including myself. And still do here on RU-vid.
.....is what television and music is now! Yes you're exactly right! Today's entertainment IS all crap! But this....this is pure, simple, good old American fun.
