"Runaway" was a number-one Billboard Hot 100 song made famous by Del Shannon in 1961. It was written by Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook, and became a major international hit.
Be crusing along in my '39 Packard listening to the top 40 hits ....in highschool in1961. Del Shannon with "Runaway" is still a favorite here in 2024. !
Actually he had more hits too keep Searching, hats off to Larry, Jody, little town flirt. This just happened to be the hit everyone remembers because it got an update for the crime story tv series as it's opening theme song
Holy moley, I got goosebumps when I read that! To see Del Shannon perform Runaway at a high school assembly! What, was your principal Del's uncle or something? Lol!
@@troyplace324 It was Mt Whitney HS in Visalia, Cal. Del must have been on his way from LA to SF, or vise versa, since the central San Joaquin valley is about midway.
@@miked5539 I hope you understand that language is constantly evolving. Colloquialisms find their way into language and end up being used by the majority of people. I'm 74, with adolescent grandchildren, and I pick up new words and use them unabashedly. A question like yours, and I understand I have no idea the tone or tenor of your voice while asking this question, but, the question can be interpreted as condescending/critical/demeaning. Of course, I could be seriously wrong, you may be asking to be brought up to date. Mine is no more than an observation.
@@loosehandle1 It's a modified version of a vacuum tube electrronic keyboard called a Clavioline. I believe that the modified version was called a Musitron. The instrument had filters and vibrato and was used on some other hits, notably, "Telstar".
Sadly, Del shot and killed himself in 1990-- he suffered from depression and it got the better end and is very sad. His born name was Charles Westover... his voice through this song will forever echo into the future~~
Yeah I feel so sorry for him. I have depression too but I'm still here, I know how it feels to be suicidal though. May he rest in peace, wish he was still here with us today.
Del Shannon has a voice from another world.. And the soloist, Max Crook's wonderfully, inventive keyboard playing is one of the best moments in music.. Unbelievable..
@@derrickgreen9020 Many thanks for your note. Great sound. I remember Max saying in an interview, that the tune you hear, is exactly what he played off the top of his head on stage one night, when Shannon was composing this song and asked him for a bridge. Max then stated, "I have no idea where it came from..." All best.
Maxfield Doyle Crook (November 2, 1936 - July 1, 2020) was an American musician, a pioneer of electronic music in pop. He was the featured soloist on Del Shannon's 1961 hit "Runaway", which he co-wrote and on which he played his own invention, the Musitron. Sounds like it should be used in a Syfi.
Del Shannon had a voice that could send chills running down your spine. Great guitarist as well. Tremendous talent pouring out his despair in a classic song. He may be gone but his artistry is still with us.
This song is a hit on karaoke nights and hotel evening performances. Along with Marty Wilde "Teenager in Love" this is one of my rock'n'roll favourites.
Dexter New Blood brought me here! Will never hear this song the same again without thinking about the serial killer in Dexter! Still love it and think its catchy though
My absolute favourite song from when my mum and dad would put their records on and rock n roll in the loungeroom when I was a kid in the 70s. Loved all their 50s and 60s songs but nothing is like this song.
I was at east ham to see the great Del Shannon the beatles were also on the show. Del Shannon one of the great rock and rollers his music will never die.
2024 and this song is as 🔥 as it was in 1961. Mad props to Del Shannon for creating a timeless classic. Also, hit "like" if the last season of "Dexter" reminded you this song existed.
Just to let you know, for the versatility of this song, . My 16 year old and 4 year old has this now as their favorite and most requested song after listening to it for the first time........separately!
I was born in December of 62. Yet when mom pulled out the 45s’ this song really kicked ass! She taught my musical ear to appreciate all the good music such as this Rockin ‘ hit !
My parents were fortunate enough to dance to all this music I think that’s the reason why my sister and I I love this music so much because it’s what we listen to growing up. And still sounds amazing in 2022
I had to get off my bike when I first heard this song. It blew me away at 8 years old. Del you were right up there. This song is the best song of the sixties. Bar none.
My son was 11 months old and this came on the radio. He suddenly broke out into song as this played, enjoying the song. This was before cell phones so we couldn’t capture it. But whenever this song plays, it puts a smile on my face.
I LOVE dancing to this song! 60 years later people still GO CRAZY over the beat! I wish he would have made it through to see the impact and joy he brought to SO MANY people with his voice even years later when he probably deemed this song to be "uncool". Rest In Peace You musical talented genius!!

This is my favourite song of all time. I used to play my parents records and it has stuck with me forever. I will tire hearing it, can't even say why it's so special...
Those dancing moves are totally awesome and killing everything we've got now! Girls back then were just more classy and have fun from dancing and moving to the music. Today is only showing off. Where's the fun? Of course with Del Shannon, oh yeah!
Brilliant song, if this was created today in 2019 it would still top the charts. Tom Petty got me into this song, when he references it Running Down a Dream. RIP Del.
1961 Blacks were still segregated even after they fought and died in ww2 , they still couldn't vote even . I don't think life was simple . That is upper middle class Elite wealthy point of view of life. And Typical of Baby Boomers in 2020. You watched to many movies about that time LOL
@@akaksukiforever tu eres pendejo o te haces xd? Por obvias razones la música buena siempre se mantendrá cómo lo que es, incluso con el paso de los años llegará a ser mejor y la mala, siempre será mala
I listened to this as a 5 y/o boy back in 1962 and in 2023 still today it resonates with me. Its one of my favorite hit songs of all times for me. I love to see what they look like today in 2023; the singer and the beautiful dancers; wish they can do the same performance for us to see in 2023.
