Del Shannon (birth name Charles Weedon Westover) would have turned 83 years old today, 30 December 2017. In honor of his birthday, I'm sharing a high quality upload of his often overlooked 1968 album "The Further Adventures of Charles Westover".
For most of my life, Del Shannon was only "Runaway" or "Hats Off to Larry". I didn't realize until the last couple of years just how deep his discography goes, how many great covers he performed, or the great songs he penned that found fame elsewhere (think Peter and Gordon's "I Go to Pieces" -- yep, Del wrote that one!) The man had a beautiful, versatile, and powerful voice. It was suited for country music, for rock music... whatever Del attempted, it sounded genuine and earnest, and he owned it!
"The Further Adventures of Charles Westover" (bonus tracks included) captures his versatility. There are elements of rock, country, psych, and much more. Strong songwriting, strong performances, lush and organic instrumentation. This album easily became my most listened to record of 2017 and I will continue to hold it dear in years to come.
So, put on some good headphones, kick back, and enjoy one of the best albums you've never heard!

Hey all! This album was absent from Spotify for the longest time, but I recently discovered it on there! It has different cover art from what is in this video, but it has all the songs like the CD I ripped this from. Much of the time, if an album is on Spotify, it's on most of the other major streamers as well, so look for it on your favorite one. Glad everyone is still enjoying this upload!

It’s always interesting to see how artists from that early rock n’ roll era (late 50s-early 60s) reacted to the psychedelic revolution. A lot either ignored it or tried to hop on the bandwagon. Del clearly got it. I never knew he even made this record until I just discovered it. This is a psychedelic masterpiece made by someone written off in history as just an early rock n’ roller.

We have it running through my family too. It bites you in the ass when things get to be too much for too long... we lost two people in my family to it, and almost a third. Take care of yourself and don't let it get you... I've seen it as my lifelong job not to succumb. Prozac helped me immensely, but some react badly to it... it can trigger a first onset of bipolar mania in people that hadn't been previously diagnosed as being bipolar (it does NOT cause it, it reveals its lurking hereditary presence). And that's where things get dangerous for a person... still in a state of being depressed but also able to do self harm in an agitated way, actually driven to it. It wasn't until the early 2000s that they put all the pieces together and realized this risk for some people, so your poor great uncle in 1990 was too early for them to even monitor for this possible side effect. I am no doctor, I am only a person who had to learn about my meds, and those of my bipolar relatives and bipolar boyfriend. Your great uncle was a terrific talent, gifted, creative, and so versatile. I am so sorry we lost his uniqueness and musicality. Take care of yourself and love your gifts... enjoy them. Try to keep life interesting to you... sing a lot, even if only you hear it.

Del Shannen I learned about him not so long ago, although this is the music of my childhood, I lived in the Soviet Union, today it is Russia, but music is eternal, I believe, it will outlive us all a hundred times, although it is difficult to say what our society will be like based on the realities of today. I would like to wish all people success and peace, and let the music live, that's the main thing.

Del still has a thriving fan club building yearly on fbook. All of his self penned stuff beyond his well known early 60s classics is stellar. The album, "the further adventures of charles westover," is a fantastic psychedelic masterpiece. He had other great obscured self written songs in the late 60s like What Makes You Run, Never Thought I Could, Break Up, move it on over, Coming Back To Me, hey little star, For A Little While, Stand Up, sister Isabelle, Colorado Rain which are brilliant and at points sound like The Byrds, The Stones, the beach boys and more, but it's all uniquely del. Then of course he had a great final posthumous album "Rock On" produced by jeff lynne and mike Campbell of tom petty and the heartbreakers fame. Songs like Walk Away (cowritten with petty and lynne) and calling out my name and others are hauntingly beautiful tracks. Del was an amazing artist.

I've been a life long fan of Del Shannon but somehow missed this gem. As a crate digger I have found some of Del's other albums like "Rock On"and "Drop Down and Get Me"but not this one. I would like to see a comprehensive remaster of Del Shannon's catalog. In 1998 there was a two CD set released by Snapper Music but it mostly concentrated on his mid 60's music and none of his later music. It's too bad because we're missing a lot of great music 🎶!
@brockharris318

I think that may be the anthology CD set you're referring to -- highly enjoyable, as I love rock n' roll oldies, and Del did them as well as anyone. When I posted the above video over three years ago, I had only found the album myself just a few months prior. The version with bonus tracks ("What's a Matter Baby?", "You Don't Love Me", etc.) just feels more complete and those added songs are as good as the original tracklisting. Would be great for Del to get his due. He was so much more than "Runaway" (as wonderful as that song is). I feel honored to have walked the Earth for ten short years while he was still with us.

@@brockharris318 I was on RU-vid when I first became aware of the album, " The Further Adventures of Charles Westover". The video was about 15 minutes long and showed albums by fifties recording artists, who were trying to adapt their new music in order to fit into the changing music scene of the mid to late sixties. I went on to Discogs and Amazon and saw that the "The Further Adventures of Charles Westover" CD from 1998, was priced at 25 dollars and up to over 40 dollars, for a European edition. Only four copies were available. I'm seriously considering buying one of them.

As a songwriter, I wouldn't be surprised if the end of New Orleans inspired John Lennon to write Come Together............
@seansweeney3532
@seansweeney3532 Год назад
Well, John wrote Come Together directly mimicking "You Can’t Catch Me" as it was originally for a political commercial. But that didn't happen, and Lennon liked it enough to want to release it, kind of forgetting the borrowed riffs and lyrics. And it was Paul who mentioned the probable liability and played the part on Rhodes in a funky swampy groove. But John insisted on learning it to play it himself. But the swampy thing came from Paul... a good idea, since it probably saved John money, since Berry sued and he settled with him. And then afterwards mentioned the influence with impunity.
@seansweeney3532
@seansweeney3532 Год назад
This video is rather charming... showing at 12:00 McCartney showing John how to play what maybe morphed into Come Together... this is the Abbey Road sessions, and John rarely played the Sparkle Top Rhodes (I just got my own Sparkle Top!) So it likely was that song in embryo. I believe "Because" was played on a Ballwin electric Harpsichord, and not upbeat. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ykxbc9eavuY.html

Further praise for this album. Del Shannon wrote most of the songs on it and proved that he belonged with his more celebrated competition during the late 60's. But I think he was forever lumped into the pre-Beatles era and dismissed as a contemporary artist by 1967. No doubt the commercial failure of this album was a turning point for Del as he withdrew from ever again making so fully committed a work like Further Adventures and instead, became a Dick Clark oldies act. Too bad because if he had kept at it, he might have been rewarded with the 2nd act success that mostly eluded him until the end of his life. Really hard to believe this LP did not find an audience in 1968. But to site one example, the Kinks produced masterpieces that flopped like Village Green Preservation Society, but Ray Davies songwriting was inexhaustible and eventually Lola gave them their rebound in the 70's. I think Del would have found an audience in 70's country/rock. He even resembled John Fogerty a little in appearance. Older acts like Jerry Lee Lewis found their footing again in country music before going back to their rock roots and in hindsight, Del might have done the same. But Tom Petty later advised him that 'You're not a country singer, you're a rocker' and so he was until the end.

What to make of it, apart from being excellent. Well Jeff Lynne did not produce it. No funny organ. Some chemical substances or traces, distant now after so many years. Has a UK folk country feel which was in vogue at the time. Even George Martin touches. Definitely Mr Oldham. The over assistant one. Appears to be big and expensive production. Phil Ochs went the same way in 68. Must have been a turning point.
