I'm a drum set player, but started taking saxophone in college to get better at arranging for big band. I absolutely love playing Saxophone, but play at a last chair freshman high schooler level. Long story short it's hard for me to justify spending a lot of money on a saxophone since I'm not performing with it. I bought a Conn Tenor Saxophone and enjoy playing it. One day a guy came into the music store I work and asked about getting his conn alto sax looked at. It was covered in mold... so I told him the cost of a repad. Jokingly I told him I'd love to get it since it was so close to my tenor, but couldn't justify buying it. Two weeks later he walked into the store put it on my desk and said you can have it.
I've always loved the vintage/raw brass look on an instrument. So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to test out laquor removal. What came out of it was pretty cool I thought. Usually you'd have to pay a lot of money to get a decent quality instrument with a vintage look.
A friend of mine told me about this technic. Submerge the instrument in Distilled Vinegar for 24 hours. Then place the instrument in a bath of scolding hot water for forty-five minutes. Then take out the instrument pull and wipe off the instrument with an old rag. You'll see the laquor chip off as you do this. You repeat this process for about a week and a half.
