Everyone with a japanese bike older than a year will have had a snapped off plastic lug at some point. They cant just be glued back on as it never holds and will just snap back off again, they are a natural stress point and need beefing up if they are to remain intact...
Here's how i do mine, once done like this... they never break again.... Enjoy.

9 and a half years later, I now have hope for repairing / restoring a 20-year-old UJM. A fun little Honda VTR250, acquired with the requisite cracked and broken body panels. I have been putting off diving into it, for the fear of the cost of plastics repair. NO FEAR! Amazing how simple some jobs can be... if you first only KNOW. Credit Delboy's Garage for saving yet another old motorcycle, otherwise relegated to a corner of the garage, never to run the roads again. You have a new subscriber, mate -- I'll add my thanks and appreciation.

You sir, are a genius. The L.H. side cover on my "81 Suzuki GS 850 is back in place. After two repairs with epoxy, I thought I was gonna be looking for a replacement. Even with Ebay, an identical one is unobtainium and a N.O.S.is too much money for me. I experimented with your method with a pointed soldering gun and tacked it in place as you did then I gobbed the plastic on using a hotter gun. I popped it in and removed it in the process and it showed no signs of weakening. It's nice to see someone who knows what the hell he's talking about on youtube.and I appreciate your tutelage...

Ayup Tim, that's great news mate, and such a common story ... so few companies will repair things these days, they'll make the same profit from just replacing it... and they don't really care if you can afford it or not! Glad we could help and thanks for watching mate, all the best, Del

this one helped me, i plastic welded my side panel and my mates front panel, i didnt have a dremel but found it very easy to cut the troff for the plastic to weld into with the solder iron. used couple paper clips to strengthen wanted to use staples but mislaid them. cheers again mate

Hiya Del, I used your plastic welding technique to repair a broken lug on my own Bandit. Worked like a charm and strong as new. I've also found it good for other repairs - cracked plastic recycling and garbage bins, a cracked dustpan and the clear plastic shroud of a food chopper that had become brittle from too many dishwasher cycles. Thanks mate!
@Moonfleet41

That's news mate, and if you think about it, the plastic is already made, so to recycle or repurpose a plastic is surely a great environmentally friendly thing to do! Glad to it worked mate.

As always, interesting advice. I've only ever had to fix one lug, one of the ones that sticks out from a side panel and pushed into a grommet. I used epoxy glue, which worked well, but then reinforced with plastic strips I cut from an ice cream tub. It's held for ten year or more but does look messy. Always fun working out how to fix things though.

Sorry Steven, it was hidden under the bodywork so i didnt bother paijnting it... but if it helps heres what i would do... fill back the lumpy finish till its flat, then sand the area with 800 grit to make it 'key'.. then just spray it with some high build primer, and flat back with 400, 200, 180 grit till its smooth... then just repaint it as normal. hope that helps.. thanks for watching.. Del.

Thank you so much for showing this simple trick. I really appreciate it. I've repaired my side cover using your technique (stopper stuck in grommet, cover in my hand! ). Next I'll repair a broken lug. I realised when I was doing it, that you've done this a few times... it's not quite as easy as you make it look. I've also posted a link to the video in the forum for my 30 year old bike. So you might get some more fans! Keep it up. Cheers, Alex B.

Thanks for the tip. Just had a braking light switch not working completely. The housing was loose allowing the switch to push the body out rather than compress. A quick run down the case with the soldering iron, topped up with a small cable tie, case solid, brake light works a treat :D

Haha, isn't it always the way, mate, if you can't find the plastic then you can cut a piece to size from an old dustpan or plastic bucket and weld it in, anything that's the same thickness and curve will do, then just sand, prime and paint, good luck with it, let us know how you get on, I'd be interested to see the results, Thanks for watching, Del

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 12 лет назад
Yeah. thats more or less it, what i meant was that if you have another bit of broken plastic the same stuff as the job, then that will be the very best 'solder'.. but as a goos second, cable ties are made form nylon, and as thats very soft and pliable, it makes a good flexible weld... and as some of the plastic vapourises under the hot iron you need to add a bit more to build up the meterial and make it stronger... and yeah, the steel paper clip makes a great stitch..
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 11 лет назад
sounds like a good plan to me, file the broken end so it fits as well as possible, and get stuck in mate... Del.

@RareTreatLetMeTellYo Hi mate, yes you can weld it just one side, but it wont be as strong and may break again in the future.... but there is no harm in giving it a go and seeing it it will work. if it breaks again, then you will obviosuly have to get it painted, but at least you tried... hope that helps mate.... cheers, Del.

I find the welding trick NEVER holds. ABS motorcycle plastic, non abs cable ties. For me, I found a simple trick. Get some old ABS pipe and shave it down to get some filings. Mix in a plastic bottle with small amount of acetone. The acetone melts the ABS and ONLY ABS. You want a soft putty consistency,so either add more ABS shavings or let some acetone evaporate off. Apply the putty to bare ABS and it will chemically weld, becoming one with the part being fixed, not a patch. It will NEVER let go and will be just as strong as the part ever was. I just fixed major fairing damage on my bike and it looks like new! If fixing a crack the trick is to file or Dremmel a small v channel in the crack, then fill with the ABS putty. For tabs I simply sand the back of the parts and putty it up, reinforcing as well. LEGO is ABS plastic and a small bit of acetone will melt it down as well, giving you repair putty.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 8 лет назад
"I find the welding trick NEVER holds"... then you haven't done it correctly... I find the most effective plastic welding is done with cable ties because they are soft and melt more quickly, leading to less vapourisation of the parent plastic, the reason your plastic welds have never held is more then likely because you don't melt the parent plastic enough, all welding is able penetration, just as with metal, you must liquify the parent material before adding the filler material, most people simply melt the cable tie and hope it sticks... it will stick, but it will not become one with the parent material unless you melt that completely to a liquid and combine the two plastics as one... as with all welding, it's a matter of combining the two materials in to one material...so it's probably more your technique that is laking Sir, I assure you I've never had a plastic weld break.... but I do find your chemical method of making putty really interesting and may have a go at the myself... thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciate your input !

Hi Michael, have not done a carb clean video, as have not had cause to clean one, you can buy products to flush through them if it's only minor, but if they've been laid up a long time, then take a manual, remove them from the bike, and clean them on a bench, but all carbs are different, so it would be difficult to know any detail about yours... sorry I can't be any more help, good luck, Del

Hey Delboy! Great video! I'm going to watch and keep an eye on a lot of ur videos, I have few questions, would you say that a copper stitch would be necessary for a side panel crack? I also have a few cracks happening at the bolt points but they are not lugs, they are quite a way into the panel/faring, should they be repaired equally as strong as a lug with a metal stitch? and finally haha might sound like a stupid but is there any difference between white and black cable ties' plastic? thanks!

Overall very informative, but "THE BEST filler" is NOT cable tie, but pieces of the exact material that you are repairing. There are numerous different types of "Plastics" and cable ties are generally made of some type of polyethylene. This would not match ABS, for example.

Bodge? Wrong filler material used and bits of wire? Most panels are either ABS or ABS Polycarbonate alloy. The ABS is the core material for strength and the PolyC for toughness. Cable ties are Nylon so not compatible. Find some ABS and use that? Also groov the rear unseen edge of the crack and fill that with donor material. Food containers are not suitable either. Car bumpers (painted ones?) are a good source and there's lots of those about!

Well, it is still holding strong to this day after all these years so go figure...
@MrProfessor1942
@MrProfessor1942 6 лет назад
You are 100% right should be buying a bit of ABS plumbing Pipe and grinding it and in combination of ABS Glues liquefy the ABS bits and apply the Mixture to the broken Tab still using the metal reinforcing bits not sure if there is a Kit available Nylon or PVC is as you have already stated NOT compatible to the best of my knowledge.

The metal burred into was something I kerned today Thanks. You know what? I worked out the cable tie trick 10 years ago. For laziness I was looking for some scrap plastic to do a plastic repair and found a off cut cable tie in my bench. Worked like a treat. After many plastic welding project I have worked out that yes cable ties are good for some plastic but to hard for some others. Have you tried plastic shopping bags? (they are brilliant) use it on soft plastic but be careful not to use a too hot solder iron. I got mine set 115c degree as over that, you be boiling the plastic and get harder and loose flexibility. Also to avoid extra sanding use a shopping bag and a gas hot gun (the one for heat shrink) melt it on top (as top coat I mean) and brush it with a non plastic paint brush (pig hair or some sort). P.S. plastic fumes are hazard and tossic. Do not breed. (lastly excuse my English).
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Thanks for that great insight my friend... you are clearly much more practiced and much more experienced than me. I only tend to use it for fixing bike parts where the plastic is harder than the cable tie... by simple common sense the best material to use is some of the same plastic, if you have it... and yes, always do this in an open area so the fumes can escape! Thanks for posting, take care, Del
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 11 лет назад
Hi mate,firstly there is no difference in the colour, the nylon that makes cable ties is just dyed,they all start out as white..with the panel crack...I always pop a stitch in if I can, 'cos every crack is at a stress point.. otherwise it wouldn't have cracked!..instead of a piece of copper,if you want a finer stitch which is less obtrusive,then use a paper clip..main reason,welded plastic is never as strong as before,so stitches will help to stop it cracking there again...cheers, Del

Hi Mark...thanks for watching mate, if you do it again, stick with the paper clips as staples, being open ended will just slip out...the curves both ends of a paper clip act as a hook to hold on to each broken half, the only staples that would work would be those heavy brass box staples if folded in at each end to make a hook...thanks again, glad it worked for you,,

That's a great video. I've just snapped the end off my bandit seat panel, so I'm going to use what I've learned from your video and get it repaired.

Thanks mate, if I may suggest, before you get stuck in, then get yourself a little practice at perfecting it on some other bit of scrap plastic first, then once you attack your panel, you'll already be good at it!

That's a good idea, I've got another bandit seat panel that is very badly damaged so that would be ideal to learn on.
