thankyou sir for sharing this knowledge with all of us. it's helping me a lot I have a question that when we restore the volume group (VG) it's not showing the LVM inside that VG so do we have to restore the LVM again afer restoring the VG. thanks

while restore one LV using metadata, will that affect other lvs in VG?

Ji, in what interval the vgs and lvm are getting backed up. What's archive directory has? How about the data integrity?

+meetdarwin007 Not sure which interval u r looking for VG and Lv. Archived directory will store systems Vg and lvm metadata.

It will not backup in regular intervals.. The recent lvm file will be in backup and whenever there is a change in the vg the file in the backup moves into archive and a new file will be created in the backup directory...

Do we need to deactivate the vg for restoring the deleted lv?

Basically in real time scenario, you wouldn't have the VG metadata. Hence you would need to restore it from backup and follow the step to restore your VG. With regards to inactive and active VG, you would be perform this operation with both case as you are going to use metadata file.

while demonstrating vg restore u copied the file to /tmp but the question is why someone will the file there as no body knows that mishap gonna happen so in that we will not have that file anywhere. so keeping that in mind u should showed how to restore without that file

+sourav roy what you said is make sense but we have no other way to restore VG if metadata is not available. /tmp is just an example, in real time it would be restore metadata from backup and follow the steps showed in video. Hope this clear.

yes, but the thing is in real time vg backups are taken and if taken then it would be rare case. Anyways your demonstration was good

followed all your steps but after restore the vg but lv is not showing over there

You should be able to see them if steps are followed right. My videos is unedited and you can see how it has to restore.

It should work logically. Since I haven’t tried I can’t assure you. Can you give a try in test VM and check.

files are not recoverd after vgrestore

It should work. Believe you tried same steps I showed in the video. This video made on RHEL6 and I still need to test this on Rhel7. May I know which OS you tried?
