Adirondack 25, one of three surviving ALCo RSC2's, needed a new home. On display at Utica NY's Children's Museum for 34 years, the locomotive had to be moved since the Museum was being sold.
For a time, 25's future looked dim. As time dragged on, scrapping the old engine, an unattractive option, nevertheless became more likely. However, the Remsen NY Development Corporation wanted to display 25 at the Remsen Depot, 21 miles north of Utica. A GoFundMe page was organized and nearly $7000 was raised to cover the costs to move No. 25 to Remsen.
On Dec 30, 2020, Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern moved No. 25 up to Remsen. We catch the move north at Harbor Point Road, Utica, on the bridge over Old NYS Rt 49, Marcy, on the bridge over Olin Rd, Stittville, at the former NY Central passenger station in Holland Patent, ascending Remsen Hill, Prospect, crossing Pine St, Remsen, and conclude with switching activity at Remsen Depot.
The move was made at restricted speed (10 MPH).
A video made on Dec 16th shows the first day of efforts to move 25 off the Children's Museum • "Saving Adirondack 25" and a video made on Dec 18th shows 25 being trucked a short distance to a railyard • "Highball 25!!!"

Classic Alco being delivered by just as classic Alco’s, fitting tribute to a beautiful machine.

I walked around on that engine probably a half dozen times as a kid. I kind of always imagined it would rot into the ground where it sat. Incredible seeing her here in the light snow, rolling along, like its just another day on the rail road.

Even if it ain't running ever again, I think it'll be great monument to that beautiful Schenectady steel that once ruled the rails of yore. And to be hauled to its new home by its brethren only adds to that.

Hi from Green Bay, Go Packers. I wish I could help to restore this diesel to operation. But the GB&W RR roundhouse was destroyed by WCL in 2001, luckily I got photos of the destruction. Here we also have the National Railroad Museum since 1956, initially for steam, then in the 1970's added Diesels. We have ALCO U.S. Army #8651 class MRS-1 built in 1944 also a A1A-A1A for International service in Iran during WW2. Then it was shipped back, and later used by the Milwaukee National Guard for crew training, until donated to NRRM in 1979, But it has Never operated at the Green Bay Museum, and is essentially intact. There are hundreds of ALCO diesels just sitting outside rusting away, at museums thought the North American Continent. So, we can all cooperate and donate different parts and pieces to get this one special diesel in operation once again. Then we can also work together again to get the next special engine to operate once again. We should draw our inspiration from the Union Pacific and Big Boy 4-8-8-4 no.4014, plus the father and son from Indiana that worked in their farms workshop to fix their fleet of saddletanks and run them at other museums around the USA!!! Since they did it so can WE!!!! Remember the inspirational song and Motto from WW2, "We did it before, we will do it again!!!! Merry Christmas 2020 A.D. and A Very Happy New Year 2021 A.D. GOD Bless us, Everyone, Everywhere!!!! Amen!!!!

Unless I'm mistaken--in the late 70s or early 80s that old Alco was a working hoss at a large bldg supply company in Hamburg NY, just outside Buffalo. I spied it sitting there silent one sunday and stopped to check it out thru the fence. I believe it to be the same unit. How many of these had Adirondak Special and Olympics graphics painted on? Whether or not it's good to see it survive.
@TheD1CT4T0R
@TheD1CT4T0R 3 года назад
There were two RS-3s in the green and gold. One was sold to NYS&W and the other to Buffalo Southern, which I'm guessing is the one you saw. #25 actually didn't wear the green and gold until years later. It was still in Florida Power & Light blue and orange until at least 1990 (there is a photo of it in Scranton still in FP&L colors in 1990 for a railfan convention)
@borderlinelen4687
@borderlinelen4687 3 года назад
As a little kid in the early 60s we lived closeby the old NYC Black Rock Yard in Buffalo. Among the many diesels were RS 3's in black with the grey and white lightning bolt from front to back. My bedroom faced the the multiple tracks about 20 yards away. There were trains all day and night. One of the lines ran over the Niagara River a short distance away. The others would go north toward Niagara Falls, the other branched south to PA. Once or twice a year we'd see the Ringling Bros B & B Circus train and the James E Strates Shows trains rolling by. They were pulled by F units. On rare occasion we'd see a Can Pacific or Can Nat'l steamer. Don't get me started on wooden cabooses!

What was the reason to have this engine ride on the 3 wheel trucks when most rs units have the standard 2 wheel trucks?
@tommachut7167

To reduce the weight on light rail. More wheels distribute the weight of the locomotive. The center axle was not powered. RSD 5's had 6 axle trucks, but all axles were powered. RSD-5's usually weighed more.
