Edit: Update! We go over the new BIOS update and what fixes and changes it all brings, including the MUX Switch! Check it out here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HNwyS0VeBi4.html --- --- --- We’ve heard you guys, and have scoured the forums. Since the recording of this review, Dell has released a BIOS update for the G15 Ryzen Edition, and it also includes the toggle for the MUX switch! To add on, we’ve also noted of some of the ways the community has suggested to reduce those CPU temperatures, be it a custom fan curve, dabbling with NVIDIA power settings and whatnot. Thanks all! In all honesty, the laptop is still going to perform great, especially if you’re living in a country with a cooler climate. We still stand by what we’ve shown because it really is what it is and that’s our experience. But if you guys either feel that this review is misinformed or it would be better for us to make a follow up video on the various methods to fix the temps as well as MUX benchmarks, like this comment and let us know!
For anyone still having cooling issues, download the Ryzen Controller - Set max temp to 85C - Save as a preset - go to settings tab and select "Reapply Periodically" and make the value "10". Holding the settings for me and I don't have Mt. Doom on my lap anymore. 👍
Can somone help me please. I just bought my Dell G15 5520 Intel I7 16gbs of ram. The Temps are off the chart!!! I left it in sleep mode without any apps running for an hour and its pushing 0ver 200 degrees on the CPU and Almost 200 degrees on the GPU... thus can't be healthy for the machine... what can I do? I cant even imagine what will happen once I start gaming!!!
Dell has released another new BIOS v1.4.0 3 days ago, and they claimed the following update: - Updated the Thermal Algorithm to reduce the system temperature and fan noise. - Enhanced the Dynamic Boost feature to support 15 W in G Mode to improve the performance of the graphics card.
I bought this laptop here in the US on sale for $1100. Crazy that I got this package for the price, almost feels like I’m stealing lol. Great review thank you for the help

Dell just recently released a bios update that added a mux switch and also increased the performance by 15% when optimus is enabled. When optimus is disabled, it delivers even a more 35-40% performance. Depending on the workload.
idk I updated the bios and I havent noticed an improvement idk, I watch the watt counter and it struggles to exceed 115 on some games. Idk for sure though I dont play a lot.
@@DeltaOps3 It seems to get above 115W, you have to enable G Mode and make sure game shift is set to rapid cool. That will get you up to 125W on the old VBIOS and the newer VBIOS ups it to 130W.
I got this laptop in Australia at 20% off for 1784 AU$. Full price was 2,230 AU$. I ran Dell update when I got it, plus updated Windows. Bios was also updated. I am happy to say this laptop is a beast! Had no problems what so ever! Thermals are great. G button boosts fans and run things cooler. I have been using my laptops on a single fan cooling pad, and this one runs fine and cool even if I am using the G mode or not. If you are not using G mode, the fans will still kick in and quickly cool the temps down. I had no problem or complains with this laptop, for the price & specs its great! The only thing that it lacks a bit is its bland looks. Its not ugly, but it is not striking either. The speckle grey color makes it look like an old laptop from early 2000s. For a non nerdy person who doesnt know about laptops, they will think its an old and shitty laptop.
I think i can help you with temp issue. My temps for cpu go max up to 80-83 but down to 76-78 with gameshift. Go to advanced power settings from the battery plan in control panel and disable process perfomance boost management (title mught be differently worded) and viola. Happy gaming!
Yes that would definitely help, no doubt. And it wouldn’t affect gaming performance either since the GPU matter more in most scenarios. It just still isn’t the best of worlds.

What I would honestly do is the registry hack so you can disable turbo on the CPU. Honestly, any game is playable with 8 cores at 3.2ghz..just copy the balanced power plan once you did the registry hack, call it turbo disabled, and one click whenever you need to from then on and you have a continuous 3.2ghz, with no overheating, and low noise :) A steady clock speed of 3.2 with zero fluctuation is actually going to give you very consistent performance, and will allow GPU to run slightly cooler too. I did this in the 17" Tongfang chassis with 5900HX (3.3ghz) and 3080, and it's so quiet I couldn't believe it. And even playing cyberpunk, cpu stayed at 60 degrees max. GPU never went above 70 in this case also. G15 is more thermally constrained but I predict CP will never rise above 70 in this mode.
I believe that the Ryzen engineers have addressed that the high temps are normal and to be expected. My Ryzen 5600x runs pretty warm, and I've had 0 problems.
They are designed to run and take the heat, yes. But it still isn’t great. Also, a desktop processor cannot be compared since you can just slap on a better cooling solution anytime you want.
@@Terafied it isn't great or bad. It's just how they are engineered. They pushed their final zen 3 platform to the max. It is the equivalent of a sports car compared to a typical muscle car. They don't run the same, but it doesn't mean that one or the other is bad.
I got mine about a week ago, so using directly on wooden desk I can feel it really hot (when I take away the laptop right after gaming from desk) But since I am putting in on laptop arm, everything's alright. I run HEVC video transcoding for 48 hrs with ambient temperature ~30C, it runs perfectly. Also with the Alienware OC Control, the fan can kick in a bit earlier, so I checked that my HEVC transcoding task didn't bring the CPU core beyond 90C most of the time. This G15 5515 has 125W TGP RTX 3060, which I believe it could beat most of competitors in same price range (I was interested in Asus previously, but with same price I can only get a RTX 3060 with 95W TGP display).
Hey, amazing review! I bought this model for 1250€ in Italy on the 25th of May and I agree with your thoughts about fans. The standard fans profile is shit but with a bit of customization in the Alienware control panel you can easily fix this. Performance are amazing anyway!
@@Terafied my aliebware control panel didnt have any fab customization options so i uninstalled it but now it says the alienware command center isnt even compatible with my g5 5510?? Any ideas why this happened?
I think this laptop is pretty great value as the main competitor to it is the legion 5 as that also has a 115w and a mux, and that with the same specs is 1599$, while this is a 100$ cheaper
@@lazyfoodie6828 it has lower tgp on the gpu (130w in the dell and 100w in the omen) and even the cpu has lower tdp of 35w when compared to the 45w in the dell
So, the intel version with an rtx 3050 of this laptop costs 1000 euros here in germany. Atm it's reduced to 870€ for a few days. I'm looking for a solid Laptop, gaming is not the top priority but would be very nice to play some modern games with kinda good graphics with it. Feels like a very good deal with this one, you guys say I should go for it?
I have this Dell G15 laptop RTX3050, 16GB, Ryzen 5800. I noticed that its performace with Autodesk application is not that good compared to my previous laptops with lower specs. Is there any way I can do to resolve this problem?
I'm planning on getting this laptop soon and am really excited my big concern was the screen but it is nice to hear it has 100% srgb coverage unlike the 120hz version
It's only possible on the GameShift (G-Mode), which is fine, yes. Room temps was about 26C. But worry not, Dell has since fixed this and we'll cover it in detail in the next video.
@@Terafied It's actually rare it's ever 26 here in the UK (it is right now) so that ambient temp won't help but good to hear they have done the relevant update :)

I ALMOST returned my Lenovo Legion 5 with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H - 16GB RAM - GTX1650Ti (which I bought a month ago) to buy this one and your video saved me. The overheating seems to be a massive flaw. Thank you!
I have this laptop and overheating isn't a problem at all even while gaming. You have to set the cpu power boost to disabled which is enabled by default. I had some cpu heat concerns then but after some research and tweaking that singular setting, the temps barely go above 70 degrees celsius even when I play heavy games like warzone and apex. I would recommend this laptop because the battery life is great and its not a super flashy gaming laptop. I have the ryzen 7 5800h + rtx 3060 + 512 gb nvme ssd edition (5515). So far it has been nearly perfect. The screen is a little lacklustre in my opinion but its not terrible unless u do heavy photo editing or need great colour accuracy.
@@fanatiquefantastique8516 Thanks for the reply, it's very helpful. I'm still kicking myself over this and apparently it's too late to return my laptop, since the store's policy only covers returns after no longer than 30 days. Legion 5 is also great (which is what I have), but that RTX 3060 on this Dell really hurts my brain and it's so much better than my current 1650 ti. That Dell had to appear on offer very recently, there's no way I could've missed it back when I was choosing a new laptop two months ago. Hopefully I won't get ripped off next time.
Sure. But it's not ideal. Even if the processor can take it, it doesn't mean the surrounding chips around it can take that much sustained heat, especially more so in a compact and tight frame like a laptop chassis. However, check out pinned comment to find out more about this laptop, for it's been fixed!
I was really looking forward to this machine which might be my next upgrade however when you mentioned that one problem of this thing is temp, at that moment i removed it cause after have a terrible experience with my old Gaming laptop which also happened to be dell G3. I think dell aren't improving in thermals department in my opinion. What you think
There’s quite the mix between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ reviews on the G15 at the moment. As for as our current review goes, we can say for a fact that the thermal system in the G15 works as it should, evident from our tests. However, there is something to say when temps go back up once the bottom cover is in place and on a desk. Despite that, we would still say most of the issues come form the software itself. How the fans are configured by default and the power profiles and whatnot. If you would like for us to dive in deeper however, read our pinned comment and let us know your thoughts!
great vid! Have you tried raising the back of it to improve airflow? do you think that, along with the new BIOs, would resolve any thermal issues? I just bought one, considering repasting when it arrives as well
I bought this thing about a year and a half ago, and one of the ports just started to not work. Turns out it was a motherboard problem. Praying it gets repaired
Also the Australian dollar is roughly on par with the Singaporean dollar so the laptop in Australia is priced at around $2,500 AUD however I was able to get the laptop for just $1,800 AUD during the Boxing Day sales in December last year! But I still also soon after spent $300 on a great 2TB Samsung EVO M.2 SSD to expand the storage as 512GB was definitely not enough storage for my needs! :)
go to your bios and disable advanced optimus hybrid graphics for the best gaming performance. if you dont, it will run both the integrated and discrete gpu. if you need battery life, turn it back on. this will lower temps because the ryzen wont get as hot
How far back will the display tilt? I own several laptops over the years and I often connect my laptop to an external monitor. I tilt the display all the way down so that it is pretty much flat and level with the keyboard, slide the display under the monitor, and use the laptop that way. The G15 appears like the display may not tilt back very far though and would block the view of the external monitor. I am just trying to find out about this before ordering one. Can you tell me? Thank you.
Why didn't you test it with the bottom of the laptop off the desk? Most gaming laptops need a bit more air intake space underneath them in order to cool. Lots of people use them on a riser stand or other setup that lets the bottom intakes get the amount of air they need.
Hi bro I got a problem with dell g15 can I contact you.Pls bro I got it today and I completed windows config and I don't know I opened nvidia panel and I clicked agree then I shutted it down . After I restarted it is coming black screen with cursor. Pls help me bro!🙏🙏🙏
Does anyone have this laptop and have successfully upgraded the RAM? Currently sitting here stuck with two 16GB 3200MHz PNY modules that when installed in the machine causes it to not boot, and according to the power light blinks, due to a "CPU failure..." The PNY modules run happily in an Intel based Inspiron 15 I have. Hoping to not have to return this laptop as there haven't been any similar deals.
Should I buy Dell g15 ryzen 7 7840hs with 16 gb ram and rtx 4060 8 gb gpu or Lenovo legion 5 ryzen 7 7735hs with 16 gbbram rtx 4060 8gb gpu?? Both have same price. Totally confused. Plz respond soon.
At the time of recording, nope. However, should we be able to hold on the laptop for longer, we might be able to test it again with the new BIOs and hopefully some tweaks to the fan and power setting as well.
Dell g15 5515 ryzen 7 , 3050ti vs Dell g15 5511 i7 , 3050 ... please What is you recommend for heavy software running, graphic design with gaming. Please select me one.
@@ActivateLA Can't post link on RU-vid. Go to the product page for the Dell g15 and it will have the updates drivers and software. Need to update the Alienware oc for fan curve and bios for mux switch.
@@ActivateLAyou're welcome both updates are very simple for the BIOS update it might take awhile though and stop at a certain percentage for a while. It will complete on its own though.
Umm... you can just tune the fan curve to spin earlier....did you know that? My device stays at 40-50 during idle. The problem you are mentioning only happens when on balanced mode. The solution is to make a custom fan curve and you wont get high temps.
Nope, it doesn’t work on our unit. The fans still only kick in at 95C on the standard mode. We’ve reinstalled the Alienware Command Centre software, updated BIOs, reformatted Windows, nothing. No matter what we tweak on the fan curve, it doesn’t respond as such. If it works for you, great! But it wasn’t that experience for us. In addition, if physically removing the bottom cover actually resulted in lower temps, it does say something in itself.
Also, even with a custom fan curve, the 100% speed on balanced mode is still not great, it still results in the CPU holding 100C under load. Only the G-Mode unlocks a higher ceiling of fan speed.
@@Terafied hmm that's strange. No idea why the fan curve isn't responsive. The underside does get pretty hot while gaming though, and I got a laptop cooler to fix that issue.
We’ll say the 3050 would fare much better. Also, simply propping the laptop up on a laptop stand or a fan would help immensely. It would actually be the simplest solution if you do get the issue. Others have mentioned tweaking the fan curve will solve the issue, but it did not work on our unit. We’ve reinstalled Alienware Command Centre, updated BIOS, reformatted windows, nothing. The fans don’t respond as the curve should. Hopefully you guys don’t get the issue, and it’s just our unit alone. We’ve reached out to Dell on the issue prior, but they took far too long to return to us. Should they have a solution, we’ll update in a pinned comment!
Bhai , dell sucks at gamig laptpps , 3050 is similar to 1650 , not much performance upgrade , moreover dell laptpps heats like a oven , always over 90c , and u cant do anythng...
Do you have proofs that it's going to burn it at 100°? I'm asking because when a big company as Dell sells you a product and says to you "it's OK running at 100°, that's the way we do it"... I... Believe them... It's hot, I know, but if they say is normal... Well... 🤔
I have this laptop and yes it gets hot but it's fine... especially with the new bios update I never ever have seen it hit 100 degrees.. the most taxing game ms flight Sim 2020 I get between 88 to 95 degrees and other games I get mid 80s to about 91 degrees.. I trust dell and trust it will be fine..
What's important about high temperatures is that they do not throttle and this ryzen do not throttle, AMD has said that this chips are made to withstand this type of temperatures and their max temp is 105C
We might be able to dive deeper and do a follow up video on the G15, addressing all the issues and workaround which the community has suggested, as well as updates from Dell, so do look forward to that!
@@matheusrodrigues2431 yeah i checked it at the store the screen of the ryzen 5 is too dull....only the ryzen 7 165hz version has the 100 prcnt srgb screen. Make sure to carefully check it.!
Also the Ryzen 7 has a max Temp of 105C Compared to Intels max of 100C So maybe that’s why. The RYZEN is designed to be able to be able to withstand higher temperatures than Intel. I don’t think it will damage the silicon.
It wouldn’t damage the silicon, but it sure isn’t great. But the fact that removing the bottom panel results in lower temps show that the thermal system in the G15 is indeed more than capable. It’s just simply hampered by the software and that physical bottom cover. Slight bummer for sure.
I am planning to buy a laptop for gaming purpose but I still struggling to buy latest g15 ryzen 7 with rtx 3050 or acer nitro 5 gtx 1650 144 hz or asus rog strix g15 ryzen5 Rtx 3050 144 hz ….

It would seem that in SG, we only get the orange/red keyboard SKU, no option for RGB here. Nice to hear you guys have it wherever you maybe! Also, noted on the Ryzen Control workaround, we’re currently in the midst of looking through them all!
