Thank you i had 2X4 ram sticks from old machine bought an ssd for 25 bucks and got a t9900 for 25 on eBay . This machine moves faster than my new laptop. Thank you for the Video for 50 bucks it went to trash to gold.

Thanks for the video. A great thing about this old laptop is the ease of switching hdds. That side slot makes it really easy. I have 1 SSD and 3 hdds, They can be swapped out in seconds, damn near like changing usb devices. BTW. watching this vid at 720p, cpus at 46 degrees centigrade, ram usage at 1 gig.

Wonderful for upgrading. Mine has had the CPU and RAM upgraded, an SSD installed, I swapped out the 768p screen for a 900p one, put in a 5G wifi card, and replaced the keyboard for the one for an Inspiron 1525. And the HDD module for the DVD drive bay. Currently C2D E8435 3.06 GHz, 6 GB of RAM, 240GB SSD, 640GB HDD, and dual-boot Mint 19 and Windows 7.

@@shafeezajalalludin678 There are _loads_ of listings on eBay for great upgrades! I'm upgrading mine to the maximum RAM and CPU levels; with 8GB of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 - they're the most the laptop can handle. In total it is costing me $180 AUD (~$150 USD).

Note thou, a firmware version upgrade is needed for the top end CPUs such as the T series to be used. ie T9900 - T9500

I maxed out at 4 GB ram a couple years ago and checked with PC shop .They said 1545 board will not recognize more than 4 GB of Ram. I also upgraded to new SSD . This 1545 is running great with Win 10 the speed has improved greatly for a 10 year old laptop. I may do the CPU upgrade can't be to expensive.

@@johncate9541 Thanks for the reply John....The info I received was also confirmed buy several replys Iv'e read on repair video's......was told the board will not support more that 4Gb......could still be wrong.....I upgraded the CPU to T9600 2.8 Ghz from T4500 2.3 Ghz seems to run faster with SSD now ....cleaned fan area too. It boots win 10 in 20/25 sec. Thank again

Could you tell me the necessary components I need to have a better CPU and faster processing? I don't know what the names of the components, how the look like... But the video makes it easier to understand... But still I'm not familiar with the names... I don't trust the shops and people who are not motivated to help me... At least now I need to have a better ram and processor.. Maybe ssd card... But that's too expert... I really need a help. No one can help me here or have time for me.

@@johncate9541 Thanks for this reply comment. I have my son's old 1545 and since it is a heavier laptop than my new DELL (what a piece of crap!) I want to use it but I need more RAM to work with Adobe CS3 or CS5 for video editing. I expect spending $100 on 2 '4 GB' sticks will work.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the i3's, i5's or i7's will work in the Dell Inspiron 1545. The Dell Inspiron 1545 uses a 478-pin micro-FCPGA which is socket P and based on the Penryn core. Depending on the model of the Core "i" series chip it will use a variation of an LGA 1150 socket. Pin counts can be 1150/1151/1155/1156 pins. Oh and their not really pins. They are more like pads. Technically they are called landings. i7's, i5's and i3's share some of the same sockets but you have to find the exact model socket for your exact chip. There is a mobile socket for the "i" series called rPGA-988A which has 988 landings. There is also a BGA-1288 which uses 1288 landings.

No. The Dell Inspiron 1545 will ONLY use 478-pin micro-FCPGA socket P based chips. The i3's, i5's and i7's use variations of the LGA 1150 socket for desktop computers and they use a rPGA-988A or a BGA-1288 for the mobile versions (laptop).

See the link in the description. There are some quad cores on the compatible list but they run at higher wattage (TDP) so you may have overheating issues.

You can get up to 4GB of RAM per slot (For a total of 8GB). The RAM must be SO-DIMM (Laptop Size) DDR2. It must be 800MHz (General RAM Speed) at most. These are a little bit of work to find but there are a bunch on eBay from $90-110 USD right now.

2 of SODimm sockets DDR 2 - 800 (1600). so you can use in each socket 1GB x1 x2 ( very cheap ) 2GB x1 x2 ( cheap ) 4GB x1 x2 ( £20 each ) 8GB x1 (£50 each, and rare ) So you can have 1Gb, 2GB, 3Gb, 4GB, 5GB, 6GB, 8GB totals only Maximum total for both sockets to be no more than 8GB.

@The Legend I've got a 1545 too. It can run a bunch of games which are from before 2013-ish. Minecraft does fine. If you would really like to go as best you can (Like me!), you can upgrade the CPU and RAM to the max, it's only ~$150 [USD]. All you need to do is look for an Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 (CPU) and 2x 4GB SO-DIMM DDR2 RAM @800Mhz - look around on eBay for these and you should be fine for most games, with your only problem being the GPU - which you can't upgrade - this leaves you to generally low-end games from before 2016.

my laptop is the same it was given to me mine also has the 1gb and 2gb stick a bit silly I only have 1gb sticks so mine is staying on 3gb but win 10 32 bit is OK.

The fact that Windows 10 is running okay on your 1545 surprises me. I downgraded back to Windows 7 in January this year (2020) because Windows 10 was _really_ slow. I really would recommend getting 8GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo T9900 for your Inspiron 1545 - they're the most the computer supports and it would certainly help you run faster in Windows 10! :)

I bumped my old 1545 cpu from a 2.0 GHZ to a T9600 2.8GHZ, ram from 3 to 4 GHZ, SSD. Put linux on it. It flies. Also tried win 7 and 10. works fine for all for my needs. Not a gamer. Parts cost, about 80 bucks. year now with zero problems. Took less than an hour. BTW, boot time with linux lite 64 bit is about 10 seconds. 45 seconds with the original Seagate.

Please tell me how you are satisfying the 1066 Mhz external bus speed. I cant find any 1066 DDR2 SODIMMs. Do the Inspiron 1545 memory sockets also accept DDR3 memory? Thanks in advance.

DDR2-800 works fine, and it's what Dell shipped these with new. You don't need 1066. I'm running 6 GB of DDR2-800. In fact, Crucial says that ordinary DDR2-667 works. You can only run DDR2. DDR3 is not compatible and won't fit in the sockets anyway.

Its 2020 and I found my old 1545 gathering dust.To my surprise its battery is still good. upgraded ram from 3 to 4gb ram,would like to upgrade to go 6 but the 4gb ram was too expensive,cloned the old platter to ssd and awaiting for the T9800 cpu,T9900 is twice the price for just a few mhz higher. For now upgraded to win10 and works pretty good.I wish there was a way to improve on the gpu, Any ideas?

I really don't know, the GPU is soldered to the motherboard and I've never tried to mess with that. I'm sure it's possible but I wouldn't even know which chips would be compatible or if you can even readily find them.

Thermal Paste on the GPU?, When I did this it overheated my Inspiron 1545, Luckily I bought a thermal pad and installed it. Don't use thermal paste on the GPU.

If you want to upgrade your CPU I recommend the T9550 its only like 20 bucks on ebay.

I tried the t9800 but it got way too hot. After going through all them till I got to the 9550 which seems to be most stable. A word of advice is that you get a cooling pad at the very least, the 9800 gets hot fast and it seems the fan won't kick on in time. If you see lines going through your screen over and over thats what will happen. But maybe youll have better luck.

Upgraded today. Benchmarks show about ~%35 to ~%40 higher scores. Replacing the 8 year old thermal paste also seemed to have helped, as before cpu replacement my old T6600 went up to 70 degrees celcius. The new T9800 is hanging around 58, during CPU-Z stress test. Didn't apply paste to the gpu and went with the previously installed thermal cushion. Seems to work great for now.

Baloney. Thermal paste cannot cause the machine to overheat. All it does is create a more effective connection between the chip and the metal of the heatsink--same as a pad. Now if you went with a processor with a higher wattage (TDP) than the stock one, then yes that can cause overheating.

Try with just one RAM stick, then the other to see if one is faulty (hopefully you matched the pair?) Also, did you use a processor listed in the link in my description?

Pretty much identical. That link you posted is skewed because there's no data for value on the P9700. Clock speed and bus are the same, the T9600 just runs at higher wattage.

I did the exact same as shown in the video. Same laptop, same CPU. Pressed the power button, the power light flashed and went out and turned on. Heard the harddisk run for a few seconds. Then it stopped. Screen is blank. Laptop does not load. Bought a used CPU online. Help please!!

@@amakhawaja It booted right up, said it found new hardware, and prompted for a restart. If you're sure you did everything right and seated the processor completely in the socket you may have a bad CPU.

@@saurab1820 yes Das it did .... made my system faster especially with the 4gb RAM. 8gb was too costly for my liking. I was making an error I didnt tighten the screw all the way for the processor. That locks it in properly. Works great. Should be ok for a few years as I dont use it for code or gaming.

Per your video sparking me, I ordered a P9700 yesterday to replace my Inspiron 1545's processor, but I just realized it's currently a T4300 @2.1Ghz. Will that make any difference? Also, I'm upgrading from 4 to 6GB RAM, replacing my already upgraded 5400RPM HDD with an SSD, and upgrading the wireless adapter card.

The RAM should work as long as it's the right type and speed. This laptop is never going to be very good for gaming though. The main limitation is the graphics chip, which is soldered to the motherboard.

I'm actually running an E8435 in my Inspiron 1545, and typing this answer on it right now. If you haven't already bought one, try to find the SLGEA version (stepping E0). It runs a lot cooler than the C0 stepping SLAQD. You probably already know this, but E8435's were made for a certain Apple iMac model, but except for a couple of power-saving features that are missing, it's the same as a T9900.

Just upgrade your processor, buy this one on ebay or amazon (Intel Core Duo P9700 2.8 GHz 6MB 1066MHz Processor SLGQS mobile laptop cpu) and buy 2 sticks of ram (4Gb each stick) and it should work faster, improve performance, etc. Then your laptop can go a few more years.

I would do the BIOS upgrade but I don't know if it's necessary. I do know that a T9900 will work just fine. I've upgraded three of them with that CPU and another with a T9800. Even an E8435 for an Apple machine will work if you set the vcore to the T9900 specs in software (Throttlestop for Windows or Linux-PHC for Linux.)

The laptop has two DDR2 SO-DIMM slots, with a max of 4GB _per slot_ in the computer. Only DDR2 at 800MHz is the most it can support. Yes you can go up to 8GB as you wanted, but not DDR3.

Did you have to uninstall the old CPU in Device Manager before shutting it down and installing the new CPU? I’ve read a couple of comments elsewhere where people have said you have to do this so that the new CPU gets ‘picked up’ by the laptop. I’ve got a T9600 on its way to me. Already installed an SSD, new wireless card and increased the RAM to 4GB. Thanks.

No, it will recognize the new one just fine without uninstalling the old one. You'll have to restart the system once or twice but that's it.

Tanuktun No not at all. The system will need to restart a couple of times but it won't affect the OS or any other software or data you have installed.

Yes, it will work, but be careful with it. Most X9100's run too hot to be safely run in a 1545. If you want 3.06 GHz, you're better off with a T9900 or an SLGEA-step E8435.

Need help. Tried to change dell 1545 cpu to t9900 cpu. After changing the cpu my laptop wont work. It is stuck in a cycle. Power button pressed.. fans start .. hdd runs but the screen won't turn on. I thought the issue might be with the new cpu so tried doing it with the old cpu seems like that doesn't work either. Not sure what might be case. Any advice would be appreciated!! Thanks

Not sure. That processor should be fine. Did you bump the screen connection or something while doing it? Can you tell if the machine is booting and just missing the screen? You should get the screen, possibly with an error if the processor is not seated correctly.

@@peachferrari thank you for replying. I don't think I did anything with the screen. All I did was change hdd to ssd and change cpu. The ssd change I did with the old processor. And it was working before I was changing cpu. The laptop doesn't boot. even if the screen is the issue the laptop doesn't stay powered on. Like the the fan does not keep running and it is stuck in a loop. And I don't get msg on the screen what's so ever so I am not sure. I might check the screen may be that might be the issue. I read online that resetting cmos might help. What do you think about it ? Once again ty so much for replying.

@@kumarbabu7905 probably not the screen then if it's not staying on. If it worked before the processor change then there is probably an issue there. I'd remove the heatsink and make sure the processor is fully in the socket, little triangle is lined up the right direction and the socket is locked in with the little screw. If you can get into the CMOS you can try resetting it but if it's not getting through a boot cycle you may not get that far. If you can get into the BIOS you can check to see if the processor is showing correctly there as well.

@@peachferrari Hi .. sorry I couldn't reply sooner.. I was caught with stuff and didn't check on my laptop until. It seems like the fault was on my side lol. I didn't turn the screw on the processor socket to the max. I guess I was a bit scared to turn too hard and I didn't go further all at. Once I did I started my computer and it works. Is there any drivers that needs to installed or anything for the t9900 cpu for this laptop. Seems like the ssd and processor upgrade made the laptop fast and responsive. The Intel GMA graphics were pretty weak even of 2009-10. There was a version of this laptop that used an ATI Radeon 4330, but that wasn't very good, either. Something from that time period might work if you turned the settings down. Modern games are a no-go.

@@johncate9541 With the max CPU and RAM upgrades; you'd go a lot further with games which are CPU-intensive or use a lot of RAM (RAM using games run mainly with Java, such as Minecraft; which I'm sure there are a few people out there that would want to use this laptop for!). GPU-intensive games are usually a lot newer because older games had to use everything they had available to them. Overall, I'd say it's a worthwhile upgrade ~$150 USD to put it up to par with some modern laptops; that's good!

You can get ddr2 2x4gb, for a total of 8 gb memory. Official specs of the laptop wrongly state the max ram as 4GB, because 4 GB DDR2 single modules were not available at that time. I'm running my Dell 1545 with 8 GBs of RAM with no issues.

Core 2 Duo T9900 or E8435, or Core 2 Extreme X9100, all of which run at 3.06 GHz. The Extreme isn't recommended because its TDP is 44W and that is pushing the mainboard to its limits. The Core 2 Quads do not work.

Nope, it's soldered on. Only things that are upgradeable are the CPU, RAM, Wireless Card, CD/DVD-RW Drive, and HDD/SSD.

It's a PGA478 socket. I would recommend a P series Core2 Duo, some have higher performance than Celeron or C2D T series (stock CPU's available in 1545 model), but with a similar or even smaller TDP. I just found the place to directly write a comment... I'm really not technical at all, but don't want to just slamm my laptop at the pc shop counter and pay all my savings for things I might as well do it myself during lock down... Should be fine. I personally haven't tried any sticks bigger than 2GB each but I think 4s work. You'll get a little better performance if you have a matched pair of sticks though.

I'm running 6GB of DDR2-800 in a 1545 and it's perfectly fine. Dell officially only supported 4GB, but 6GB or 8GB is known to work.

I know for a fact that the 1545 and 1546 are very similar and would work interchangeably. As for your model, I think it could go a lot higher! It _does_ look a lot different, so try looking up a tutorial like this for your PC.

Pretty sure you'd have to remove the whole back plate to get to it. I've never torn this laptop down that far, but I imagine you'd need to take out all the screws around the back, and possibly the front plate with the power button and they keyboard as well. Not sure, maybe see if there's a complete teardown video around.

Not sure how much RAM the system will support, but 4 is enough I would think for this chipset. The hard drive is easy to replace, just 2 screws at the bottom right on the back (top left in my video since it's upside down) and it slides right out the side of the case.
