Here is my review on this Dell Latitude E6400 laptop that I have refurbished and upgraded to run Windows 10.
I had to get a little creative to ensure the hard drive was secure, as the person who donated it did not include the slot cover.

Honestly, it should be a MANDATORY law to require all computer companies (even Apple) to have that type of user serviceability and upgradability...

I got a refurbished one for an elderly family member a few years ago that only wanted it for youtube and facebook... even with a HDD it actually ran Win10 reasonably. Ofc I got them an SSD and it's actually almost snappy.

The nvidia quadro graphics with Intel core 2 duo should handle youtube 1080p 60fps without problems you should try to use extension h264fy

It has always been a puzzle to me why sellers of laptops do not include the caddie or sometimes the hdd cover is missing. The hdd I realize is for security purposes; but the caddie and cover🤔🤔

It is frustrating, but it's a matter of time for the large computer recyclers. When they get in a couple of pallets of notebooks, they just want to expeditiously process each unit by pulling the HD out with a minimum of futzing about.. This means chucking the cover off and throwing the caddy still attached to the HD into the chipper.

You missed the Display port on the back. Rebuilt a few of these a couple years ago. The caddie/hd cover can be ordered on eBay. E6500 is similar (different caddie) but , same keyboard. I have a couple E6500's I use for MIDI computers. You want to make sure to install the Dell chipset drivers. Use compatibility. That ensures that the cooling fan works good. Just for kicks I used Rufus and fresh installed Windows 11 on the lone E6400 I have left. It installed everything except the Broadcom (that's typical of everything) It runs about the same as Windows 10. meh I prefer Windows 8.1 64bit on these to use for Midi computers. Roland modules don't work above Windows 8.1 most of the time. Lots of cheap goodies can be found like port replicators/docks. I use those to get more USB ports and the ones I bought new in the box came with 130W power supplies. 2 gig RAM ddr2 chips are affordable , 4 gig chips will set you back about $150 for two. Not worth going above 4gbs total ram unless you do something special. The P8400 cpu runs cooler than T9400

@@retropcdurham I just love these Dell Business class Notebooks. Windows 11 works with Steinberg's Midex 3 , Sonar X3. I was just messing about. With the e6400 to see how it functioned.

Not a bad choice; Cloudready doesn't have as good support for older hardware as WIndows or Linux, but for systems that it runs on, it runs well.

That is the sensor for the contactless NFC smartcard reader. When active and set up on a corporate network, it can alllow users to sign into the computer using their badge, just tap and the system will authenticate, instead of having to insert the card into a dedicated slot.

Hi, just picked up one of these. I wonder what's the small square bellow the screen (on the left side of dell logo)? Is that some kind of sensor? Thanks.

I think it's a blank for an optional camera. I seem to remember Dell putting cameras in weird places on a bunch of these models

Excuse me i have laptop model Latitude E6400 Series & i tried to connect this laptop to my tv screen & i have a cable one side is hdmi it go into the tv port & second it go into display port of the laptop so i conct the cable in both side but the tv screen still show me no signle can please help me step by step how can i solve this problem in my laptop with widows 7 waiting for your reply Thanks

On the computer hit Windows key + P to open up the display output options, which will allow you to select multiple screens. On the TV you will want to make sure that the input setting is on the HDMI port you are connected to

I recommend a full reinstall of your OS and programs to get a fresh start. Next thing to check is if the drive is going bad and needs to be replaced which is a good excuse to put an SSD in. Cleaning the fans and repasting the CPU is also recommended for any older machine since the factory paste is probably rock hard.

you should upgrade CPU to T9800/T9900, with such CPU you will be able to run youtube at 1080p

It would depend on the model. The unit in this video did not, but I have seen other E6400 that had a camera. I'm pretty sure that the E6400 ATG models have the camera as a standard feature as well.

You noticed I cut that! You just need to push the release button back in before reinserting the cover (or whatever expresscard you have installled)

This has a 7200RPM HDD in it but I'd always prefer an SSD for better startup performance and reliability

Are you referring to the speaker grills? If I remember correctly you have to partially disassemble the system to be able to remove the grills and bezels, so I'd recommend reviewing a full teardown guide

If you download the windows 7 audio package and install that instead of the standard Windows 10 HD audio driver that might resolve the issue. I also highly recommend installing the x264ify plugin as it will really help with video performance.

What kind of problems? I know on some ThinkPad near this era there were issues with dGPU having weal solder jobs that can lead to catastrophic failures

@@retropcdurham just very unstable video playback, constant popping in both audio recordings and playback, and as a whole the nvidia motherboard does not perform well vs the intel GMA.

@@troomis2479 in my experience the intel GMA integrated is far superior to the gimmicky nvidia on theese lattitude laptops.
