Is there a way to add the SSD without taking out the current Hard Drive? If I want to use both SSD and the Hard Drive. (I have 2 TB hard drive but I want to add 500 GB SSD for my operating system and main operations programs)

Got a question. I noticed there might have been a second SATA port on the motherboard (above the blue SATA cable). Does that mean the SFF does support two hard drives? I only ask because the technical specs say it supports a 3.5" drive and a 2.5" drive, but I can't tell from screenshots or videos how both drives might fit.

Mxkdi, Thanks for this informative video, I was able to upgrade my memory today on this machine thanks to your information. One thing I want to tell anyone who want's to upgrade the memory. I ordered two sticks of memory that said they were 1.35 v to 1.5 v ready. (dual voltage) and they did not work. Ordered a second pair that were low voltage 1.35 v only and they worked like a charm.

I was thinking of doing the 7570 but I am afraid of damaging my psu. I don't know much about psu's but I do know that with all your peripherals and motherboard. The psu is transferring about 100 watts and I only have a 180 watt psu so I am afraid to damage it.

i put a gt 730 in this exact machine, but its not enough of an improvement. about to slam a gtx 1060 OC in there using pcie 3.0 riser cable, seperate psu, and mounting to outside of case with fans. i hope it works out lol. Great video and thanks for the info.

Note: the 5040 SFF will ONLY accept DDR3L PC3-12800U 1.35 volt CL 11 RAM. I tried the standard 1.5 volt with no luck. In fact, I've never seen a computer so finicky regarding specifics. Will NOT accept gen 7 CPU (KabyLake). Must be Gen 6 (SkyLake) Power supply has a proprietary 8 pin plug, so no upgrades possible without adapters or overpriced OEM Dell PSU. Also, I got 32 GB (4x8) of PC3-12800 RAM. Will not recognize more than 16GB. Bad board perhaps?

The GTX 1050 is low profile but is 2 slots wide. Haven't seen a 3040, but the 3010, 3020 and 5040s have the same problem he mentioned in detail; the card slot can only handle a single width card. So no, a 1050 just won't fit width wise. After a bit a research it seems a GT 1030 is the most powerful card that will fit in these chassis.

I have 2 of these Dell 5040's with i5 6500, just installed a 240gb ssd, and gigabyte 1050 ti, it fits in 4x slot, it works perfectly fine on medium settings, same 180w psu, it did not like emulating psp or ps2 1080p internal resolutions. It did overheat on fortnite with all epic settings, dropped down to high on all, and limit 60fps, now the gtx runs about 75-81c and stable. These SFF Dell's have 2 fan settings in bios, normal does nothing for case circulation when cpu temps are fine causing the video card to choke, other setting in bios for fans is jet engine loud at full speed. As far as video decoding, you'll get smooth 8k 60fps watching the "Peru 8K HDR 60FPS (FUHD)" video on youtube.

it will if you install it in the pci-e x4 slot. It cannot be installed in the x16 slot. HOWEVER, that 180 watt power supply will be a problem. Install a 315 watt or 255 watt power supply from previous Optiplexs. I have a Optiplex 7020 SFF, swapped into a 790 DT size case (bigger than SFF, smaller than MiniTower. I have the 315 watt and Zotac GTX 1650 low profile installed. It runs great. Let me know if you need anymore help. Mxkdi is the reason i have a good gaming Optiplex! Love his vids!!!

@@djm2373 YES! I took everything out of this 7020 SFF and put it into a 790 DT. There are some drawback, front io. I found a workaround. If you need more info let me know.

Hey Alex. This Optiplex has two pci-e slots on the motherboard. The one closest to the Power Supply is the x16 slot (fastest, it’s blue) the next one is shorter and black, it’s x4. You can install any low profile graphics card in the x4 slot because there is more room. Meaning it can take up 1 or both slots. The more you put in though the hotter the computer will be due to less air circulating. You can install some low profile cards in the x16 if they don’t touch the power supply which is right next to it. For better gaming I suggest the MT (Mini Tower) version of the computer rather than this SFF (Small Form Factor). It will allow for full size graphics cards, however you could run into a power supply issue. See above on getting the more powerful power supply to be able to run your system. The 315 watt is probabaly best option .
