Dell PowerConnect 5324 - cable tips, basic setup and configuration via Putty. This really is a nice gigabit switch for cheap. For more info and specifics on commands please see the posting on my site: robwillis.info/?p=1123
This video has aged very well! For those that are using a Dell PowerConnect 5524, there are some small adjustments to those commands: 1. show IP interface - will not show your default-gateway address; instead the IP address used on VLAN will be the IP address you need to add in your web browser 2. when setting up your login credentials the format is: username password privilege 15
Great video man! Thanks a lot! I have dealt with tons of switches, this is the first managed one. You helped me out. IT Tech of 18 years...lol I know I know my first managed switch, I have found that routing is normally sufficient and I know enough about it to get customers configured. Always learning!
Hello from the future. Late arrival to class but thanks for getting me over the hump. Best basic config video on specifically the 5324 that I can find even today in 2021.

Superb step by step tutorial. I have Dell 3324, and console connection and configuration steps are the same.
Very good tutorial! I couldn't get my console to respond on any terminal emulators, had me pulling my hair out for hours. Luckily I decided to open it up and come to find that the console port was physically disconnected from the motherboard, which made no sense. Now everything is running smooth as butter!
hi i have dell pc 5524 switch i replaced switch as it was automatic rebooting so. i am having backup of configuration. but i dont know how to import that configuration plz suggest on it
hi I recently got this switch and wanted to ask when the switch is powered on should the DIAG led light. light up on boot i currently have PWR and FAN light green static also do you have the wiring diagrams for the DB9 to RJ45 connectors?
I might have missed it, but was there some reason you didn't just use a standard serial cable (vs. DB9 to RJ45 --> cat5 patch --> RJ45 crossover --> RJ45 to DB9)? Just curious.
The Dell's normally come with a cable, guess it ships with a null modem cable. Just seems much easier (and less expensive) than what was outlined in the video. If you are likely going to be purchasing items anyway...
+John Booth It definitely would be cheaper and easier. The advantage here is that I can plug the Cat 5 into a switch and now it can span a greater distance, so I could be across the building or over the wan and still get console access if need be. Other than that, its complete overkill. :)
This video is old, but I just got this switch to set up a wired home network. When I plug my working cable modem into a port, it doesn't light up. Plug in a line to the router, it lights up just fine. I've ordered a db9 cable, but before I dig into the config, have I missed something more simple?
Hello, I know this is an old video, but I have one question: - Is it possible to log into the switch via the web management built in without connecting the DB9 cable and go through the console management? In other words - is there any default IP address and default admin and password that would allow me to log into the device and make changes via web management? - Great Video btw. very informative and clear instructions - thank you :)
Thank you! I would assume at some point there was a default IP and admin/password combos but at this point I think it would be safe to say those have been changed. However if you still wanted to chase this down, Dell's doc's are usually pretty fantastic...hit up their support section and look through whatever manuals are available: www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/powerconnect-5324/manuals. I know the cable setup can be a pain and in this video my cable setup was over complicated to show flexibility. But if you are venturing down this path, it is likely that you will need a null modem to usb cable setup more than once, so it's worth buying it now :)
Hi Rob, I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing as I am trying to connect to my Dell PowerConnect 6224 and I am able to except I don't get the DELL LOGO display in yours. Could this only be showing when the switch is at factory setting? Please advise as I am not sure if my serial cable is compatible......
While many of the commands & the basic interface are similar across Dell's model line-up, you'll encounter differences in how things are displayed, etc. If you have a responsive switch at the console port, I wouldn't worry about the lack of a logo. I have a Dell PowerSwitch N4032/PowerConnect 8132 (don't ask me why it's known as both) and it doesn't display a logo, either. Just picked it up recently, and it still has it's original firmware installed. I have to do a stepped firmware update to get to the latest, but so far, I haven't seen a logo magically appear after applying one update so far. Nor have I seen a logo after resetting to factory default. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
Hi Rob, I need your help here. I am using a Dell PowerConnect 6224 Switch and as I follow through on your tutorial I noticed that upon executing the command "show ip interface vlan 1" , it gives me an error " Routing is not enable on this interface". Please advise....
Hopefully, after a year, you've figured this out. If not, and for the benefit of others, you can try the following step-by-step....once you've successfully logged into your switch via the console port, enter "enable" to get to the "console#" full-access prompt. Then enter "config", next prompt enter "ip routing", next prompt enter "interface vlan 1", next prompt enter "routing", and then the next prompt simply enter "exit". Hope this works for you. Don't forget to copy the running config to the startup config to make this permanent.
Hi Dear, I purchase used dell powerconnect 6224p from market its work fine all the port are working, can you help how I log in through a web browser, when I enter the IP address after the login page no user name and password accepted.
OMG..Dude!!! I have been ripping my hair out with my 5324p for days...I'm not worthy..I'm not worthy... Lol...Thank You Thank You Thank You!!! a Like and Sub is not enough..You Rock!!!
No it should not be, the Diag light should only be on if something is wrong. If you can, get into the web management and you should be able get more info about the alarm. As for the diagrams no I do not, but Im sure you could find them googling around.
Nope, if anything this is the non-n00b way. I wanted to show how you can run it over Cat5 like you would see in a production environment with a remote NOC. By doing that you can then run it through a switch and now you don't need to be 5 feet away from the device while configuring it.
