Yes, the module(SIP) saves the name. the old names that you see are stored in the adapter.

As someone who got into computers in around 2005-2007 this era of device was state of the art back then, but I was a noob and thought it looked cool and didn't really get it. This channel is bringing it full circle. Pretty much my favorite RU-vid channel now.

Maybe instead of keeping the KVM server in your office area and running multiple cables back to the rack, you could leave it in the rack and add a KVM over Ethernet cable from it back to your desk? Less cabling and eliminated the noise. One way to deal with it anyways.

yeah I think if I end up managing more than two machines at once I'll have to rethink it haha

You could also use something like PiKVM for the web access. Combine that with a little vga to hdmi converter to connect to the local vga of the KVM. That'll get around the Java issues.
@slightlyevolved
@slightlyevolved 6 месяцев назад
I mean, that's how these were designed to be used. The KVM is meant to be with the servers, and accessed over the network. Generally you wouldn't ever be using OSCAR but connecting via DSVIEW software or the Java Web interface. They're meant to run headless for the most part. I have an Avocent (which the Dells are rebadged with custom firmware) DSR2035. And yes, those empty spaces on the board are for additional kvm client ports. Oh, and the virtual media is usually a licensed feature and requires DSVIEW management software, at least on the Avocent models.

Nice device, thanks for sharing! One tip: cover the hole that was left after removal of the old fans. It will become the path of least resistance the newly installed fan will use and it will cease to suck the air from the front. Keep up the nice videos, it is a relaxed and welcome distraction from all the events happening related to the final and utter establishment of peace on earth.

I would recommend covering the fanless hole on the back of the KVM to make sure that he fan is pulling air from the body of the case and not just directly in through that hole. With the hole there you won't be able to build air pressure to draw in air from the front.

There are 2 versions of the USB SIPs. one with VMedia support and one without. Also, there are at least 3 variants of this box. Dell, HP, & Avocet (the OEM who created it). As far as I know there is a little bit of restriction on which brand SIPs work on which brand KVMs. I don't remember which works or doesn't on which. There might even be a way to mod the firmware to prevent the restrictions but I haven't looked into it.

When the build in power supply dies you just need to replace the 2 small electrolytic capacitors on the little riser board in the PSU they always die. The reason the local VGA seems dark is because you use a passive VGA splitter cable to the HDMI capture card and the VGA monitor loading the signal double and thus lowering the signal levels.
@clabretro
@clabretro 8 месяцев назад
yeah I'll bet it's something simple on that broken power supply. and ah, good call about that passive splitter!

That is a rebadged Avocent DSR (chip on the board absolutely confirms it). They were available in 32 port configurations, but those had a mezzanine board. The unpopulated parts of that board are for local consoles. Yours only supports one, but other models supported up to four. There was also support for connecting to a modem for remote management (pre-VPN days), and connection to UPS/PDUs so you could control power to devices as well as KVM. At least HP and Dell rebadged their hardware, probably others. The IQ modules are incompatible between branded units, firmware lockout. Avocent used to be a really cool company. They're owned by Vertiv now, don't bother contacting for old firmware, software, documentation, etc.

Man this was a throwback.. About 5 years ago I got my hands on an Avocent AV1030 which, even at that time, was old as dirt. Took me DAYS to get it going, between tracking down compatible SIPs, finding the local software and the updates, etc.. I never could get KVMoIP to work reliably but the local console was nice. I always wanted to find and AMX user station to play with too, which I think would fit your lab nicely only needing one patch back to your server rack
@clabretro
@clabretro 8 месяцев назад
nice! yeah I'll have to hunt down an expansion module if I start managing more machines at the rack
@slightlyevolved
@slightlyevolved 6 месяцев назад
Most of these Avocent based units work pretty easily for KVMoIP, BUT, they really only work with Java6u45. I'd you have Java7, you have to change security settings in a Java, and 8+ is just right out. Pretty similar to the Dell iDRAC 6 console, which, if you look closely, uses the same Java console software as the Avocents.

My dad worked for Nortel back in the day, and would bring me into the server rooms to look at things. I recall there being a large metal shelf with about 25 Pentium 4 Optiplex on it, and two huge P991 Dell CRTs next to it for managing them. There was a KVM really similar to this and it blew my mind that you could share a monitor without moving any cables. I love to see this stuff being demoed on era-appropriate hardware and OSes. Really brings me back to a time when this stuff was all new and rather magical to me. Keep doing what you're doing!

We used to have some Adder network KVMs that ran VNC servers - you'd connect in and it would have it's own interface and 16 device inputs. Clever bit of kit. Had an HP one as well but that had a Java app which seemed kinda crummy. The virtual media thing might be based on whether the adapter supports it or it's potentially something unlocked with an additional license.

I am always so annoyed when companies use acronyms that are already in use from the same sector. While I know VoIP wasn't Quite as ubiquitous when this device came out, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) was fully standardized in 1999, so it had been around for yearsss by the time this came along, haha 😢😜

I had the same Dell DS-2 at my old job. Used it to manage old 95 machines that weren't connected to network. It's actually rebranded. I believe Avocent is the ODM. They also made it for HP. Some years back I bought the HP variant for nastagila reasons and compare to the Dell version. It is the same interface (different logo), functions identically, same quirks. Interestingly the HP version doesn't have fans. There was a windows java application you can install. It's a little faster than the web browser UI; less clicks, auto-login. But in the end it launches the same java window the web browser did, just gets there faster. Java remote window ran the same once launched. They are very robust. AC in the server room would shut off very frequently and it was one of the last things to stay up and functional while everything else locked up from overheating.

There's a 4161DS variant which does 4 remote & 1 local user and 16 ports and a 2321DS with 2 remote & 1 local and 32 ports. And a 2161DS which was like the 2161DS-2 but missing the web-interface of all the others - I assume this was intended as a slightly cheaper cascade unit since those wouldn't have network anyway, the root device does that. I'm not sure this was actually ever sold, it was certainly not an option when we got KVMs from Dell back in the day. The KVM switch hardware is IIRC identical to a group of Avocent model that I no longer remember the names of but Dell has heavily customised the firmware. The Dell "PEM" passive 1-to-8 splitters is a Dell thing and only works with the Dell KVMs, but OTOH the Avocent variant accept both it's own and Dell's SIP modules while the Dell ones only accept the Dell SIP modules (sigh). The Avocent variant does offer "cascading" too but only via the more common "connect multiple active units to a master unit (which was the same)" so IF you could live with the restriction incurred by using the passive PEM splitters (only one *active* user per physical port on a KVM at any one time) using the Dell models was much, MUCH cheaper for large fleets and often more than sufficient. IIRC the KVM units costs thousands of dollar each so replacing a cascade KVM with two $20 (IIRC) PEM was a massive saving. And on the Dell you can mix and match directly connected or active cascade (for "important" servers) and PEM splitters (less important servers, one active per PEM at any one time). The Dell KVMs allows up to 512 machines (since it only allow two levels this requires at least one 32-port unit), I think the Avocent had the same limit. Getting the KVM-over-IP up and running these days is a major PITA though, you need seriously old Java versions installed for it to work once it tries to launch the display viewer, via either an old webbrowser OR the standalone KVM interface. I suspect it also needs to be on Windows 7, so "fenced off VM" basically. The standalone (also Java) Dell KVM app for it is neat in that you can add multiple KVM stacks in one view (flat OR hierarchical) and is a lot faster for just accssing servers but configuring the KVM and certain other functions does require using the web Java interface you used. I suspect the reason virtual media doesn't work is because you didn't get a virtual media capable SIP, it was the regular VGA+ÚSB (keyboard/mouse) SIP. The manual says there was a third special SIP which did VGA+USB/virtual media but I've never seen one (not that I've searched THAT hard). They certainly didn't offer the virtual media SIP back when we got our Dell KVMs back in the day so I suspect it was both launched well after the KVM unit itself and probably also considerably more expensive thus making it very rare these days.
@clabretro
@clabretro 8 месяцев назад
I'm also fairly certain this is just a Dell-branded Avocent. That's really interesting about the cost savings if you could deal with just one active user (a pretty reasonable tradeoff, I'd imagine). I think you're probably right about the SIP I have not supporting virtual media, that was my best guess as well. It's hard to tell which ones actually support it, the manual I downloaded just says "a USB2 SIP" is required.
@Torbjorn.Lindgren
@Torbjorn.Lindgren 8 месяцев назад
@@clabretro The RCS User's Guide (2010) on Dell's webpages (for 2161DS-2/4161DS/2321DS) says that it supports P/S2, USB and "USB2 with virtual media" SIP. Note the USB vs USB2 distinction, I expect that the "normal" USB SIP uses 1.5 or 12 Mbps UBS 1.1 which is plenty for mouse+keyboard... Then in the Virtual Media section of the manual there's a note that says the virtual media function requires a "USB2 SIP or Avocent brand PS2M or USB2IQ". And a second note says that virtual media isn't possible for SIP connected via PEMs, but that's obviously not your problem here. I'll post the link as a separate post to avoid RU-vid deciding to eat the message including all the text. So I was wrong about them not supporting Avocent SIPs, based on the DellKVM compatibility matrix it supports many but not all Avocent "CIP", the model names Dell mention doesn't appear to exist anywhere! but I'm I'm guessing they might be referencing the DSAVIQ-USB2 and/or AVRIQ-USB2. Ah, the 1.4.0.6 (2016, final) KVM firmware release notes mentions that it adds support for the AVRIQ-USB2 and MPUIQ-VMCHS which both are virtual media dongles. So that's likely at least four SIP/CIP models that "should" allow virtual media if you have the "latest". Savings: The first Dell KVM install back in the days that I used had ~80 servers in a data center in another continent - controlled by one 4161DS and lots of PEM and SIPs. A few important servers were connected directly (and via DRAC for power and virtual media but the KVM was more convenient), the rest via PEMs which drastically cut the cost and made cabling much simpler (most PEM to server cables were 1, 2 or 3 feet). PDU's with per-outlet power control could be used to power cycle the machines if necessary. All to make it as usable as possible without having to get data center "remote hands" involved - which often took hours and even back in 200x cost hundreds of dollars per started hour, and more often than not the person assigned was basically computer illiterate (!?), shocking but true. Now and then you got a good one, my good were you grateful when that happened. Now, a number of people had access to it but the reality is that 99% of the work was done via ssh so KVM conflicts were very rare, 99% of the time no one had any connection up at all but it was important that it was possible. I'm not sure if using DRAC modules was even possible for the (Dell) "bulk" servers at that time but it certainly would have completely blown up the budget compared to even the 5 "active" KVMs a non-PEM setup would have required. Yes, using PEM meant that "channel stomping" could and did happen but it was rare, and when it happened it was almost always one person trying to do simultaneous windows on machines on the same PEM. I suspect most Linux deployments still fall into an usage pattern that is compatible with this, though these days they'd likely have built-in KVM instead, For more concurrency you could as mentioned go with more KVM switches and active cascade, though prices went up a LOT if you needed more than 4 active concurrent remote users in a specific system (cascade of switches) though but it did exist, IIRC when this model was launched Raritan already had KVMs that supported 32 concurrent remote users "anywhere", of course requiring active cascade. It just cost a lot, LOT more (Raritan was the ne-plus-ultra KVM brand at the time and priced themselves accordingly).

Very neat. I’ve been looking for a network kvm to manage my (basement) server rack from the (2nd floor) office at home for a while. This has been a bit of a difficult task because I’m very cheap, and a lot of even the older units have “sip” modules that cost damn near a hundred bucks a pop, and most generally the used market modules are ps2 and I don’t think there exists a ps2 system board in my house anymore. Also my long term struggle to get the damn ipmi interfaces on the three servers I use to even work for remote console, thanks to the god forsaken existence of Java really pushes me away from most of these ipkvm appliances that exist on the second hand market today. Damn you oracle!!!!

24:39 You even have retro usb memory sticks. My old kingstones are all pretty dead. I liked a flashing activity light. Almost no one is adding those now. Overall, it is pretty sophisticated KVM. I like it. The only problem with it - by design of course, because it has to be compatible with everything - is amount of required cabling, when 100M ethernet to an iLO is more than enough. It could work for a tower of Raspi's, but also could draw more power than 16 of them.

Good ole re-badged Avocent KVM. Before I discovered iDRAC on the Dells this is what I would use to manage the servers. Cool feature is that you can daisy chain these KVMs together into a single KVM stack. I still have several Avocent KVMs in the rack with the VGA end pieces. Just not using them anymore because Java only works on ancient OS and pain to keep messing with the security settings so I retired them. I use PiKVM for my home lab.

I have an Avocent DSR2035 version on this thing, and it runs a bloody PPC750 aka, G3 (500mhz, I think) for the CPU. To call this "like a PC" is an understatement. Unlike x86, the PPC 7xx series chips have been made into really good embedded CPUs. They're really fast, (we're talking head to head with Pentium 4's here) and absolutely sipped power. Even the older 500+ MHz desktop chips didn't need active cooling and used about 15w.

Is the screen dim to try and mitigate screen burn-in? Being VGA, they might have taken consideration that users might be using a CRT, and if the screen keeps that thing in the top right, and possibly keeping the OSCAR interface on the screen for prolonged periods of time.

Tried a few different sticks with FAT/FAT32/NTFS, no luck. I think either still something wrong with the media on that end or maybe the SIP isn't compatible.

Something just feels wrong using the KVM at the workstation and running cat5 to each server. BlackBox (and other companies) have point-to-point versions over cat5 so you can have the kvm at the rack and only one cable back to your workstation. Not as great if you want to have local machines and the remote servers both available.

are those SIPs manufacturer dependent? I already saw a few cool KVMs on ebay but they were without SIPs and on their own they sometimes more expensive than the kvm
@clabretro
@clabretro 8 месяцев назад
I've read that they are, but I'm not sure, might depend on manufacturer. I made sure to buy SIPs that were at least described as for Dell units and all four worked. Can sometimes be cheaper to buy them in a lot. but yeah the SIPs can cut right into the cost effectiveness of the whole thing.

I get it's a view back into how we had to do things back then, when almost everything was physical. You mention it's for OS installs on old, loud servers. My question is why are you doing that at all? You can play with all the old OS' as VMs on a dirt cheap, quiet T630, with HTML5 iDRAC8.. hypervisor of your choice.

They made 8 port hubs to expand each port into 8 ports. It was a time saver from my old DC management. We had 48 SIPs. Dell bought the business that made these, and branded them with their name. They stopped selling it, and spun it off to another company, Avocent.
@slightlyevolved
@slightlyevolved 6 месяцев назад
Other way around. Dell licensed these from Avocent and Avocent white box branded these for Dell. Not just Dell, they white boxes these for other OEs as well. Avocent was then sold off to Vertiv, where support languishes to this day.

I just got one of those from eBay after seeing your video and everything runs fine so far. The only trouble I have is getting the video session viewer running. First it told me that it's some certificate problem, so I removed everything except MD2 from the idk.jar.disabledAlgorithms from the java.security file. The error is gone now, but after the Java splash-screen is gone nothing happens. How do I figure out what browser, JRE version and so on I need to get it running? Thanks! And keep up the good videos!

I just double checked and I was using the web management GUI in an XP VM running Java 1.6.0_07 on IE 7... so yeah that's probably not too useful haha. Since it's an older unit my main use case is to run it with an actual monitor/mouse/keyboard hooked up to it rather than over the web GUI. But I was wondering how far it could be updated, I wonder what the last supported firmware gets things up to.

@@clabretro Thanks so much! Yeah, I got a Win XP VM setup now as well. And I installed Java 1.6 after trying it unsuccessfully with 1.8. I did not check what version IE was. But it works now! Thanks for your info again, I’m pretty sure it will help people in the same situation in the future! Also I just bought a Dell Avocent MPU2016, which should use HTML5 for the Remote Desktop functionality. They are not too expensive either. I think I still need to get SIPs but I’ll also try the one’s I’ve got for the 2161DS-2. I was too lazy to investigate that beforehand. Also, as far as I understand, the MPU2016 can use serial SIP’s and act kind of like a serial terminal server which can come in handy! Anyways, again thanks for your help! And keep doing those awesome videos!

@@clabretro Hey I just got my Vertiv Avocent Dell MPU2016. It works beautifully. The HTML5 KVM sessions work fine on my Mac with Chrome. I also tried the Dell/Avocent AVO-CMN1005-012 VGA/USB SIP and it works fine. It upgraded to firmware version 1.00.01.15 once I connected it to the MPU2016 but seemed to work fine. I did not test all functionality (Virtual Media....) but video, keyboard and mouse seemed to work fine. The funny thing was, that once I connected it back to the 2161DS-2 it "upgraded" the firmware back to 1.00.01.13. But I think if I would have disabled the auto-update function it would have worked with the never version just fine.

@@michaelfattinger144I can't be 100% sure as I have a different model, but almost all the Avocent based units like this will work fine up through Java6u45. It's Java 7 and up that changed a bunch of security settings and broke the console software. It works even under Windows 11.
