I find it interesting that very few of the reviews of this pen mention the string (or tether), and those that do usually show it in a way that I think is wrong. The pen comes with a string that can be laced through the small hole at the top of the pen. When I first got mine, I didn't bother with it, since I didn't want to tie it to the laptop (mine is a Dell XPS 13 7390). Then one day I got curious as to what the small beads were on either end of the string. It finally occurred to me, they're to keep the pen with the computer, without actually tying it. This is how I believe the string was meant to be used. You attach the it to the pen and leave it unattached to anything else (don't attach it to the laptop).Before you close the lid, you simply drape the string across the keyboard near the hinges, with a bead extending beyond the keyboard on either side. Then when you close the lid, the beads prevent the pen from sliding loose and being lost, if the magnet doesn't hold strong enough. I've had my XPS 13 7390 for 2 years. I'd hate to count the number of times I've pulled it out of my bag and found the pen dangling, but never gone. Using it this way, I've also never had a problem damaging my screen by closing it on the beads, as the last thing I do before closing the lid is line up the string with the beads to the side. Feel free to say I'm wrong and misguided, but it works for me (and explains why they would put beads on the string).

What about connecting a second screen by HMDI? If I do that, the screen starts to flicker everytime you use the pen.

Hi, thanks for showing this. I have a Dell laptop with a touch screen, and I am planning to buy such a pen but I would not like to use it on a screen - what I am looking for is using a stylus as a mouse, i.e I move the mouse that is on the desk and I would like to use the stylus in the same way, moving it like a mouse... on a surface of a desk... is that possible? Or I need to buy a tablet to go with the dell stylus?

When using this is MPP and not aes do you lose tilt capability? How about the 4k levels of pressure sensitivity does MPP affect that if it’s mpp 1.51?

Hi: got a 7420 2 in 1 for my son's college computer and need to get a pen. Totally confused between the two pens on Dell's compatibility brochure - 579X and 5122W. The only thing I note is the 579X says it has Microsoft pen protocol and not sure if that necessarily means the 5122W doesn't or if this is important. 5122W is about half the price of 579X and son will be using the pen for note taking and not advanced art drawing, etc. Any input on which to choose would be appreciated.

Hi Mohamed Farid, you have to make sure the Latitude 7280 is the 2in1 which will have dell Pen support. If not you will have to look for a pen and pad style device like the Wacoms.

Hi I found the video to be great - am hoping you help me - i own this pen, and have used it for a little while... it was loose in the laptop bag and now the nib has been knocked fully into the body of the pen. Do you know how i can get the nib out to replace it?

Hi tom cooper, thanks for the feedback, I had a look at my pen to see if I can help you with your issue, doesn't look like any way to open it up to push from the other side. Normally I would call Dell. If you like to risk it then here is an silly idea but may work, use superglue and glue a unfolded paper clip or metal which you can hold better to the stuck nib making sure the tiny amount of superglue not letting it touch anything but the nib. Of course best to call Dell support though before to see if they have other solutions.

Very informative thank you. I would like to know, is there an option to tap on something on your screen, and it copies that color? For a different application? Can I tap on the RU-vid logo for example and it copies that shade of red?

Cheers, George, as for your question the pen doesn't have that built in function but usually design software will have the color picker (usually the eye drop icon) in color selection that does exactly the function you are describing.

I would ask how this compares to Lenovo's Pen tech but I don't think you have been able to try the Yoga notebooks yet have you? Also, do you know what sort of Tech this pen is using? whether its Wacom technology as the Lenovo pen does? Im guessing probably not as it requires a battery.

MaZEEZaM, the PN579X does run off the Wacom ES technology similar to the Lenovo Pens these days. I have had the opportunity to play with two Yogas recently and one which I did a review which is the X390 Yoga. First off I'm not a pen user in any fashion and not a expert in this field. For me I can tell you from what I remember when I played with these two Pens (Dell PN579X and Lenovo ThinkPad Pen Pro) both similar in lag and pressure sensitivity. I couldn't get both working well in Krita (I am wondering if that's due to my lack of knowledge in setting it up in Krita) in Photoshop both work similar. The Lenovo Pen is nice it doesn't have batteries to change whereas the Dell requires AAAA. As for feel wise when writing and drawing its going to be subjective, for me I like the Dell Pen because its longer in length and has a bit of weight plus thickness to it similar to the normal ink pens I'm use to. The lenovo pen is thinner and lighter compare to the Dell pen.

Unfortunately anuvoges the Dell Precision doesn't support pen since they don't have a 2-in-1 version of this. If they did then it would have pen support.

The pn350 is recommended for the 14 5406 2-1 but ONLY FOR FULL HD SCREENS if you only have only an hd touchscreen it wont work. I learned the hard way after buying an inspiron and said stylus only to find out dell misled me by placing the fact it dont work at the bottom of the fine print. I now instead have a surface pro 7. Much happier

There is no power button for the premium pen it just auto off. As for the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 if yours is a 2-in-1 then yes it be supported but if it's just the clamshell version then it won't be supported.

I haven't used it long enough for it to drain the battery it came with yet but Dell has said it should last about a year.

@@xtinaw23 Unfortunately the pen i recieved needed a change in battery. Didnt do that in hostel, Just did that this week, so gonna be using the pen in classes tomorrow. Was good when i wrote 5 sentences out of 50 (procedure so that it recognises ur handwriting). Cannot properly claim anything yet as I havent used it properly, but was a cream to use. P.S. My first experiance using a pen on screen. Shifted from a thick gaming laptop to this i7 + 32 gb ram + 1080p laptop. Happy with the performance its delivering and really good with onenote and pdfs. Will be buying a pdf annotater for the same as pen use is bound to increase.

Unfortunately it doesn't I have found a lot of the laptop speakers will have magents strong enough to just grab the pen but they still kinda weak and not in the right position most of the time.

Dell pens are only compatible with the Full HD screen Dell laptops, not the standard touchscreen hd versions fyi.

@@BsianTech so I downloaded that app last night but it shows the wrong pen and less buttons. I called Dell Tech Support today and was on the line with them for an hour and they couldn't figure out how to get the application to show the Premium Active Pen and control options like the control panel in your video (I even showed them your video as proof that there should be more options). They said they'd have to do some research and get back with me.

Unfortunately the Dell 5558 won't support pen as it isn't a 2-in-1 (screen can flip 180 degrees).

@@XSandeepKumarX What I did was attach the included lanyard into the hole at the top of the pen, secured it, and then used that as a leverage point to pull the top off the pen.

@@XSandeepKumarX If you have already pulled the top off the pen, inserted a battery, and then reattached the top, then pressing the top button should turn it on.

This pen only works with 2in1 tablet laptops, not regular touchscreen laptops.

If you have an 2-in-1 version of the XPS 13 9310 it would be, if you just have the clamshell version it won't be compatible I am afraid.

Unfortuntely it won't work on non-touch screen and the touch screen has to support stylus which is usually the 2-in-1/flip versions.

They have a newer rechargable one 2 actually, one rechargeable with usb c and one that charges when magnetically attached to the xps 2 in 1

Hi Rubber, yes this pen can erase. The default setup is holding Bottom Barrel Button will activate erase mode.

If your Dell Inspiron 3000 is a 2-in-1 (if the screen can flip all the way to touch the backcover) then yes the this pen will work on it. If it is a normal clamstyle Inspiron 3000, there isn't any native pen support on it.
