The Dell Poweredge R720xd is a 2u server that yields insane amounts of compute power⚡ It allows for 2x 8 pin GPUs w/ half height PCIe slots (x3) and full height PCIe slots (x3) at gen 3 speeds. The onboard mezzanine connections allow for a variety of networking options (quad port, 10gb, 25gb, 10G copper, rdma and sfp+), creating an amazing networking platform that is extensible to a variety of needs. The H710 and H310 onboard cards can be flashed easily to IT mode for use with UnRAID, ZFS, TrueNAS. This platform has 3.5" (12x) front facing or 2.5" (24x) front facing slots and 2.5" (2x) rear facing (optional) drive slots, allowing it to scale to 216TB with 18TB hard drives. [Not a paid sponsorship video. I just 💙 this amazing machine!]

It's great to see you are still reading and replying to comments and questions on this video. It means I can ask and maybe get an answer. We just got one of these for our IT shop at work. We also bought 5 WD 14Tb drives and are planning on using the system as an UnRaid server to consolidate a few projects (BlueIris and FOG for starters). I've flashed the 710P mini installed to IT mode. UnRaid can find the controller but I can not see any drive connected to the system. And I've even tried using the back 2 SATA ports as well. I've connected the drives to another PC (Also running a Xeon) and booted UnRaid and can see the drives. The system has got plenty of power for what we're going to be using it for. It's just useless if it can't see the drives.
@DigitalSpaceport
@DigitalSpaceport Год назад
You flashed it to IT mode, but did you let it get all the way booted into UnRaid before determining it couldn't see the drives? What does lsblk show?
@kennethpaulson6540
@kennethpaulson6540 Год назад
@@DigitalSpaceport Thank you for replying. And yes, booted all the way into UnRaid and the only storage device showing is the USB drive. And I didn't get much farther after the other troubleshooting steps we did before the work day ended. I can check lsblk tomorrow since I have to go in anyways. The drive did show up when connected to a Windows 10 Pro PC, which as I said I also booted into UnRaid to try and it saw the drive there as well. It's only when connecting to the server that I can't get the drive to show.
@kennethpaulson6540
@kennethpaulson6540 Год назад
@@DigitalSpaceport lsblk only showed 1 drive. sda1 vfat FAT32 UNRAID. There's 2 loops showing, loop0 and loop1 as squash 4.0 on both. Again, thank you for any and all help. This is a project we started to combine several services in our plant into 1 managing device. I did boot the server with only 2 of the HDD's installed. I've pulled the fans out to look at the backplane and all the connections look and feel secure. And the drive lights do flash during boot. The installed PS's are the 1100 watt models. And in the BIOS, in integrated devices, I do have the RAID controller turned on currently. I have tried booting into UnRaid with it off and on.

@@kennethpaulson6540Did you check if it could see drives before flashing? If not, the cable may be bad, if so, try reflashing the backup you took during the standard flash procedure. It could be that the 710P you have is a non-standard model (this happens sometimes, up-binned and counterfeit chips slip into the supply chain every once in a while) or it's flash was a failure to some degree.

I have an R510-12 I got for free, fairly recently which has caused me to get the homelab bug. Been looking to replace it already with a R720xd. as the 12th gen is a fair bit better than 11th while still being super cheap. Looking to probably go all in with it, replace the CPUs with 12c24t, and start populating with 64G LRDIMMs, probably 384GB initially so I get all thee channels working, but then grow it over time as I'd want to hit the maximum 1.5TB memory configuration eventually. This video was quite helpful to point out what I'll expect to see internally. Do the rear bays connect to the same storage controller as the front bays, or do they go to the SATA headers on the motherboard?

UPDATE My R720XD has window server 2022 running on bare metal and it runs very well. My blue iris install went off without a hitch. Running Cat6A for my cameras was another story LOL. So far just having my first camera installed, the cp usages is continually well bellow 10 percent. In other words, with only one camera my server is only running at idle and with a stock fan curve is very quite. I'm going to leave the fan setting alone until I have enough cameras to hit the cpu's enough to ramp the fans. So far I love having a dedicated home security server that actually runs on real server gear. On a side note, my next purchase will be a quad socket R820 with a lot of ram so I can play with virtual machines.

You might check into DDR4 based servers the price on 2133 ECC RAM is down a lot and e4 2696 processors in a r730 might be cheaper then you think. I'm building out a T7910 with dual e5-2696v4 and 512GB and it has ample room for GPU also so pretty excited about that.

I have a Dell r820 for my plotter, it's amazing. It looks almost exactly like that on the inside, except the dell 820 has two CPU layers instead of one like this does. They are very similar, it's a very good machine for a good price. Especially if you need lots of Ram or CPU power you basically can't beat this on price. ... The only downside of these systems and something that I didn't know until it happened to me, because of how compact they are, they can catch on fire, I had a component on mine burst into flames (even though I took very good care of it, proper ventilation, dusted regularly etc...) they do have safety and will turn themself off if it happens usually, but my advice would be to keep a fire extinguisher and a fire alarm nearby, one that can handle electrical fires just in case. Not saying it will happen, it may never happen. But much in the same way you don't make backups of your hard drive because you expect them to fail, you do it, in case they fail, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, they don't cost that much and if something happens you will be grateful for it. The reason for the fires is just the more parts you have, the more likely it is for one of them to fail, as only one component has to go bad to start a fire. This is why data centers have killer fire suppression systems. Again something that may never happen, but something that I wish I had known beforehand. BTW no one got hurt or any major damage, someone was right next to it when it started smoking, and I was able to fix it, I still use it after I fixed it, just with more caution. Also, another duh moment for me with these servers, was I wanted to put an NVME on mine so I put it on one of the PCIe expansion card slots, and it did great at first, but then it kept overheating, and then I realized... oh yeah the heat comes out of the back of the server, that's why the put the hard drives in front. So I put it in one of the front slots instead, no issues with heat anymore, so note, don't put those small flat NVME drives in PCIe slots in the back without a cooling solution, they will overheat, use an adapter and put it in an SSD slot in the front instead. Still not reasons why not to buy one, they are awesome, especially for the value! Would recommend!

@Tindog81476
@Tindog81476 2 года назад
@@DigitalSpaceport The motherboard right where the power connector is, the fire started about an inch away from where the ac power comes into the motherboard. If you look for videos on youtube, there are others who have had similar issues, like with the r710s and others as well, in their case, it was often the front that caught on fire. You can just search "server caught fire" or other things. or "Dell PowerEdge r710 fire" etc... It can happen for a lot of reasons, in my case, it was a poorly manufactured part from dell. (I still have it BTW I show it to people to highlight my point) Yeah, I build computers for people all the time, and I was surprised it was a thing... I hadn't thought about it until then, but now I'm very careful not to leave boxes or anything flammable near the servers just in case from now on.
@DigitalSpaceport

wow I should talk about safety more. Lots of ppl put racks right up against walls and stuff without thinking of it. Prolly without fire extinguishers/disconnects/mounts/smoke alarms nearby also.

@@DigitalSpaceport If you don't have good ventilation or keep dust out of the system regularly (cigarette smoking is really bad for computers as well!) it can really become an issue. My particular case wasn't that problem but it's something to consider, especially if you have lots of power running to one spot. Something that people can do that is a big No-No but people do all the time, is buy a cheap extension cable and think they can pull full power over it... Nope you can only pull up to what it is rated, so if you use for instance a 16 gauge wire on a 15amp circuit, it's okay if you only pull less than 12 amps, but if you pull all 15 amps it will start a fire. It's worse if you have a 20amp circuit and pull that as well. Also, voltage and amps drop over the length of the wire so pulling too much over a long wire can start a fire (this is often how fires start in people's walls). Something else you can talk about is to make sure you have plenty of ventilation, have a backup plan, don't let batteries get too hot (that's a big one). Know how much power you can pull, your house breaker won't save you (It only stops electrocution, not fires). And just clean it out regularly don't let dust get in it, dust is flammable (don't believe me, go light some dryer lint on fire and see what that does, it won't end well trust me). Roughly speaking 10% or so of all house fires in the USA are caused by electricity. So... servers are a lot of electricity and they aren't usually factored into 'houses' usually. It's definitely something that happens, but like any risk, just have a plan, know what you're doing, then that's about the best you can do. Again a bit of cleaning around $40-50 in safety equipment goes a long way. I tell people this on C0 alarms too many people don't want to buy them and I'm like look 'Would like to die just to save $20, if that sounds stupid to you, that's what you sound like to me, buy a C0 alarm it might save your life, your life isn't worth $20."

@@DigitalSpaceport Watch the RU-vid Channel: "Technology Connections" video : "Perhaps the weakest link in the US electrical system" It's a really good overview of what is really wrong with the way we hook up power systems in our houses. This of course could even be applicable to other types of mining as well as people often don't understand what they are doing. Would recommend you should watch it if you got a half hour. We actually had two schools in my county burn down from a server catching fire... so it does happen.

hi there, I have a question about the raid controller (H710P) I looked a little around to pass through my drives. And I saw the possibility to flash it in IT mode (like you said) but apperently it's not the best and I don't know why. Could you tell me more about that ? And secondly another option is to install a HBA. What would you recommend and why? Thanks

Depending on your intended use of the drives, flashing the h310 to IT may still be advisable. For ZFS, I would not trust the passthru. The front USB I would advise reseating the cable on both ends, I've had that pulled out in my t620 cause issues before.
