This video really shows that Jeb makes these videos for fun and not for money. He could have easily mentioned the emergency landing in the title to no doubt get more views, but he didn't. This channel is great.
Thanks for saying that! This is truly a passion project. I love the airline industry and so appreciate the professionals who work hard to make it all run safely!
My thought exactly. Most creators would’ve titled this video “EMERGENCY LANDING Airbus Boston to San Fran FLAPS MALFUNCTION!!! Was I okay???” with an obnoxious thumbnail. Very refreshing to simply take it in stride during the video, instead of it being the main event for clicks.
I'm a retired airline pilot, and I train pilots to fly biz jets now. We do get trained for no flap or partial flap landings all the time. So exactly as the pilot said, we do train for this and it's pretty much a non event
Do you reckon that the pilots knew about the flap issue just after departure? Listen to the ATC dialogue - the captain said that it was stuck on the way out. Would seem safer to burn the fuel in flight, land lighter, and on a longer runway (SFO is about 1,700 feet longer than Boston Logan). The travelling public doesn’t realise that stuff like this happens alot. I am surprised that the pilot requested emergency vehicles in fact.
@@wisbradley it's not a huge amount. But from full flaps to no flaps can be pretty big amount. Luke is said regardless, it's no big deal. With some jets no flaps gets close to your max tire speed. But we know how to maintain airspeed so its no biggie either
Love that you added the ATC along with this video. It just goes to show you how professional and how prepared they are for these situations. Thankfully it was just a faulty flap thing.❤️👍✈️
I respect the pilots decision to declare an emergency. As a pilot myself, we are taught to not be afraid of declaring an emergency, and that even in a pretty stable situation like this one, the extra help and priority in line can help greatly
A excellent video mate highlighting just how professional flight and ground crews are when it comes to safety. Well done and and a massive thank you to all involved.
It's calming to hear just how relaxed and normal ATC and the pilots are with that situation. Good reminder to all of us for when we get a stressful situation.
Not really a stressful situation. Maybe slightly less comfortable for passengers, but a non event in terms of safety. The only reason I can figure they declared is a CYA move.
Flaps not extending fully is such a walk in the park to seasoned pros like that. No big deal. And DL tech ops pros had that plane fixed and back in the air in no time. Delta is such a well run machine, not just in aviation but in the entire business landscape.
Bullshit lol. I have no clue what they do in the maintenance facility in ATL, but of all the airlines I fuel at my job (SW, AA, AAY, POE, MSR, AIC, TAP, BEL, AF, Q6, OAE, FDY, and of course DL), I’ve only ever had to deal with MEL’s and INOP stickers on Delta planes. Just last Thursday I had to fuel a Delta a320 with an INOP sticker. What’s also weird is how old their airbuses and 737s are… think they need a refurbishment.
As long as they don't reduce the training requirement for diversity nonsense. I don't care if the pilot is purple or orange as long as they are well-trained.
Delta has the highest numbers of canceled or delayed flights in the US. Considering most of their canceled or delayed flights are from maintenance or crew staffing issues and NOT from weather related incidents (as it is for American, United, and Southwest) I think it's clear to see they are not a "well run machine". Their operations in Atlanta are incredible, that's obvious. But overall, they are fairly low in customer service and reliability scores.
@@Originalman144 anyone who's familiar with the industry knows that ATP mins don't change with skin color or sexuality. get outta here with your fearmongering bullshit.
Issue with cancellations due to crew scheduling/staffing issues is more due to network planning building out a schedule 6 months in advance anticipating a return to normal hiring environment. Summer schedules are being adjusted to account for this.
As a 321 NEO Long Range captain (A321 253NX) I can say they are an excellent aircraft. My company uses them for Transatlantic travel between Europe and the US. They are a game changer in aviation terms as they operate so efficiently from a fuel point of view. We operate with a business class offering with full lie flat beds and an economy of 171 seats. 186 in total. They are the future when compared with the 757 which my company would have operated on the routes they now serve in the past. As for the flap issue encountered on this flight , it’s a non event for us pilots. It would only be a concern if operating into an airport with a short runway. SFO wouldn’t cause any such issues.
Looks like a real good aircraft. But from what i understand its just a stop gap for a MMA I do know the cargo load procedure in a 321NEO is extremely restricted particularly with live animals plus its just not the same size below. The 757 is still the only true MMA.
When ATC asked, “how many souls on board”, that really struck a scary chord with me. I fly a lot and only once have been in an emergency landing situation. You’re right, we all love the niceties and service when we fly but safety is paramount. For that reason, I always makes point to thank the cabin and flight crew when we land. “Safe travels” is more than a casual comment. Another great video, Jeb! Thank you.
SOP. As a gate agent for a different carrier, when I bring down the final paperwork and count, we notify the captain of the souls on board. Part of it is for weight and balance, the other is in the event of emergency.
@@nicholasbenge9497 Yup, and pilot knew that right away. DIdn't have to ask anyone...this is how many humans on board. The reason is so the emergency crews can account for everyone! Did we get all 202 off? Good...
Fun fact! The fire station that services SFO also services my neighborhood of Visitacion Valley in San Francisco, station 44! They are amazing and do a wonderful job of protecting us. Happy your flight landed safely. Thanks for another great video.
Great to see the pilot explaining it to the passengers so there was no shock with all the vehicles. I am also very impressed with you Jeb, you could have put emergancy landing on the title and got a lot more views, instead you left it as normal and just included it in the video, good on you!
Great video Jeb! While I’m impressed with the new features of this plane, I really appreciate how you’ve devoted so much time to praising the crew of this flight & the ATC at San Francisco. Thanks for reminding us that air travel is so much more than food service & IFE. BTW the Jeb Score should be a solid 25!
A little trick I learned last summer, when you’re on a flight, and you want to take a Timelapse video looking out the window, on most planes there’s a gap between the window and the shade. That gap is usually big enough for a phone to fit into. You just start your video, then you close the window shade with the phone in there, and you can take a video.
These pilots are true master classes. They absolutely portrayed this perfectly to the passengers and crew, even if it was a fairly easy situation for them. Well done by them handling the situation all around.
Beautifully handled by the flight deck crew! The fact that they read the passengers in and exuded confidence shows just how good they are at their jobs and how much respect they have for their passengers! Top class flying 🫡
Yep, air travel is incredibly safe. I spent over 30 years flying around the world as a member of TV documentary crews (did some of the UK coverage of the fall of the Berlin wall), hundreds of flights with the odd turbulence or go-arounds but never felt unsafe. Good call for pointing it out.
Delta Air Lines has the most seasoned pilots operating their aircraft. I am a ramper for Delta and have worked many diversions/“emergency landings” and the pilots have always communicated with us down on the ground quickly and efficiently and I expect the same goes for their communication with ATC as well as the people in the cabin.
I was taking a flight from SFO to DEN on AA flying economy since I didn’t have enough miles for an upgrade. Deciding to take a chance I mentioned you and other RU-vidrs who do flying reviews and how much I loved their honest reviews. The man at the ticket counter seemed quite excited when I mentioned you and his favorite as well. As he was checking me in and handing me my ticket taking a seat at the gate I noticed he gave me an upgrade. Thank you so much! 😀
In my opinion Jeb, Delta is the finest airline in the sky; from their absolute professional staff to their extraordinary website, they are simply the best. I too have had to deal with rough landings with Delta and each time, our crew handled the situation with the utmost professionalism. Thank you for this. Safe travels, "See you in the skies!"
Flap issues happen from time to time. As others have said, it's well trained for. If I'm not wrong, it's the identical design to the A321ceo that Delta have a bunch of as well, so it's probably a known and reliable part.
Yeah really not a whole lot of difference in a new 321CEO and a 321Neo…Delta is just hyping this new fleet of there’s like it’s something truly new to everyone, when In reality it’s been out for awhile, They (delta) are just late to the party.
@@wkdravenna no CEO stands for ‘current engine option’. This makes it easier to differentiate as there have been basically 2 ‘neo’ designations thus far.
Love this good display of safety! Lounge 4/5 stars, food 5/5 stars, seat 4/5 stars, IFE 5/5 stars bringing the flight with Delta from boston to San Francisco a total of 18/25 but let's bring it to 23/25 for a safety bonus!
The Boston satellite SkyClub is definitely one of the better SkyClubs in the network (by extension one of the better airline membership/card lounges in the US).
This is such a great video. My wife and I are headed to HNL on Tuesday the 7th on the A321NEO departing from SeaTac. I’m super stoked! I’ve flown every other Delta aircraft in their fleet. Can’t wait!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video Jeb. Love the Delta One product. As an Airbus pilot, we are extensively trained to land with slat/flap malfunctions, and I'm happy to see a professional crew safely get you to the ground. Please do more airline videos like this. Cheers!
With ATC, that's part of the job. If you can't "stay cool" you won't survive the job. I've listened to ATC recordings from one mega busy airport and the guy was having a VERY bad day. Pilots wouldn't listen to him, traffic was piling up on the inbound list, nobody available to relieve him. He cracked all kinds of light-hearted jokes while struggling to sort out the traffic. Amazing how he kept his nerves. Not a job for everyone. I'd have totally gray hair within six months!
One of my favorite(?) memories is an emergency landing on an international flight from Japan to Detroit- there was a minor electrical fire in one of the bathrooms and we ended up landing in Anchorage Alaska. Quite the sight to see all the emergency vehicles lining the runway as we landed!!! And.... I can say I've been to Alaska! LOL
Strangest thing I ever saw was when my plane was landing in Zurich. An armored personnel carrier with what looked like a 20mm gun in the turret pulled up next to the plane and shadowed it all the way to the gate. I have no idea what that was intended for. Then while waiting for them to open the door, I thought I saw something odd in a nook underneath the terminal about 500 feet away. I THOUGHT it was some weird sort of moving elevator. When my eyes adjusted I was in shock. It was a full size German made Leopard tank! I knew that the country had all kinds of underground networks kind of like the famous Maginot Line. There are hidden bunkers, fallout shelters and mortar launchers that can pop up and spray the skies with mortar fire within minutes. But I tell you, it feels very very weird arriving at an airport and seeing a tank sitting in the shade. I have no idea if there was someone inside but I have no doubt it's all ready for immediate action if ze Germans decide to come! 😁 Even IF that was remotely possible, I wouldn't be concerned. The Alps made it impossible for Hitler's panzers to invade so it would mostly be an air assault. I know for a fact that Switzerland bought dozens and dozens of Stinger launchers from the US for air defense and the militia do train with dummy rounds on drone targets.
For domestic flights, I keep the windows open. I also try to pick my window seat so the sun isn't shining through. I like having natural light when I work, watch TV, etc. So I would have left it open.
Glad to see Delta is FINALLY get newer aircraft. Flown numerous time in First Class and all but 1 seemed to have been built in the 90’s and nothing to brag about and not that comfortable. Flying in a few weeks from SAN to FLL in First Class. Not getting my hopes up for a modern aircraft. Thanks for sharing.
That speech at the very begining of the video really hit hard for some reason. Arline pilots are truly incredible people, and i hope to one day join them in the skies
No one likes emergency anything when flying....so I like that even though it wasn't a problem, they let ATC know it could be and roll out the crews. SFO is not an easy airport to land at with OAK and SJC nearby plus smaller airports (San Carlos) close by. As for the A321neo, got a chance to fly from LAX to DAL last year on Alaska Airlines. They don't have anything like Delta's First setup. On the trip itself....always enjoy seeing my hometown featured (BOS), not just the airport as you flew over my old apartment.
I’ve watched so many of your videos and this is the first I’ve ever commented on. What a fantastic bit of film this was! I just flew that route on two separate A321-NEOs and I was amazed by the airplane’s lack of noise and total comfort. The team at Delta is so very professional and puts safety first. These are two reasons why I always fly with them. Thank you for this video. It was incredibly informative and was an excellent reminder of what makes aviation truly amazing!
Delta is probably my favorite airline. I flew them down to FLL, from KBZN, and had a wonderful time. We had two legs of this epic journey. One, from KBZN to SLC, the other, from SLC to FLL.
Thanks for the introduction to the new A321NEO. I appreciate the intelligent and professional way you covered this event, without sensationalizing it. If only most of our media coverage would be so balanced. (Retired Airbus pilot)
Thanks for acknowledging the professionalism of the crew and ATC. I experienced an aborted takeoff on an American A321 when we noticed the right engine making a weird sound on takeoff roll. Great video!
Great video. This is just one of the reasons Delta is my first choice as an airline. I fly so I can enjoy the views. I love your channel. Keep up the excellent work.
It's also worth noting that prior to this, BOS-SFO had been typically a domestic 757 for a few years since Delta One service went away on this route. It's not like it went straight from D1 to FC with the neo coming. Since Delta uses that 757 configuration for some international flights (marketed as Premium Select, most notably to KEF), I suspect that we will see this be a Premium Select seat in at least those cases. The neo will also get some 1-1 lieflat + 2-2 Premium Select (likely this seat) versions which will take over BOS-LAX from the D1 757s; it might not be that surprising to see them go on some Boston TATLs either, especially since BOS's configuration makes it difficult to operate 330s and 764s (to say nothing of 350s!) to Terminal A.
I love all your videos. First of all I am terrified of flying!!! Although I flight couple times a year. Watching your videos makes me understand that people enjoy flying for a reason!!! I adore how you love flying and how highly you speak about it, even when there are emergency situations! I just want to thank you for your amazing work, i have been watching you for couple years now and truly enjoy your videos!!
I would love to fly on an A321neo at some point and I’m sure I will if for no reason other than sheer happenstance since I fly almost exclusively on Delta. I live in Oklahoma City, so all of our flights are Delta Connection via SkyWest (made up of E75’s and CR9’s) with the only full service Delta flight being to Atlanta (mixture of 320’s and 717’s) and that’s roughly 2hrs from gate to gate. All that said, thank you for this review. It makes me pleased to see Delta investing in this aircraft and look forward to flying it when that opportunity does come.
Love how the pilot says "Yeah, you'll see airport vehicles near us, don't worry about it." and quietly leaves out the part where he technically declared an emergency XD
I flew one of these to Maui, back when the fires had just hit, we were connecting to Kona but the aircraft was almost empty. The only people flying out were those going to assist with the rescue, it was a lovely flight, lovely crew!
Thank you for sharing this story. I have had one emergency type landing as well (bird strike in engine) and the pilot and crew handled it amazingly and were cool as cucumbers. We ended up completely safe as well but they also took these precautions with emergency crew meeting us on the runway. The crew was honest with us about what was going on but very calm and it went very well. This was on United but they also took amazing care of us, got us rebooked, hotels and the works.
