In this video, I go over the steps in replacing Delta style stems and seats. When these showed up in the marketplace they were marketed as "washer-less faucets". Well, they don't have your typical flat or beveled washer held in place by a bib screw but the little cup down inside the recess is rubber and it sits up against the bottom stainless steel seat of the stem, WASHER-LESS? You decide!

I. like Mr. Overwater, did not know about the small spring and rubber seat, and I was flummoxed as to why the new Delta cartridge didn't fix the leak. Your knowledge in this matter was invaluable to me and I thank you so much for helping me to avoid a much bigger bill from a plumber to fix it, 'cause I was at my wits' end. I'm a disabled vet, and on a small income, so this really helped! Again, thank you very much for your video, and may God bless you and yours.

A big thank you to Bob's plumbing video on the replacement of the Delta sink cartridges. Even though I replaced both cartridges and aerator, my faucet still dripped quite a bit. While watching his great video, I didn't know about the tiny spring and rubber seal that is below each cartridge, problem immediately solved, a big thank you to Bob.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thank you. No amount of yanking would budge the cartridge for me. So I turned the faucet over and used a hammer and screwdriver to pound them out from the other side. Lowes did not have replacement cartridges so I just bought a whole new faucet. 🤣

What this doesn't show is if you fail to get/remember the orientation of the cartridge. Is there an easy way to figure it out? You mention how to prevent that, but wonder if you fail to note this!
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 года назад
You pull them out, note the orientation of each stem and place the along side the faucet where you removed them. If they get mixed up for any reason, not too difficult to figure out the proper orientation. A little trial and error is how how I learned to figure it out.

Nice video; thanks. Unfortunately my professional plumber is unable to solve the problem after installing a new cartridge (RP24096) complete with 1/4 turn stop (RP2409) and new seat/spring RP4993. When installed the same direction as it was prior to removing the old cartridge the water does not turn off. However, it does turn off when rotated 180degrees ... but of course that means the handle is facing backwards . Any advice ?

You can rotate those stems 180, you may have to 180 the body as well but they're reversible.

That's cute that your cartridges pull right out, almost like you could tie a thread to a butterfly's leg and it would lift them out. I've been pulling at mine for the past 2 hours, PBBlast, etc. and nothing's happening. Oh, and the bonnet nut was rounding the entire time, but managed to finally get it to budge. Of course, it's probably been leaking for a year, so my fault.

This is for Mike Crosby! Mike having some technical glitches, sorry. If you're having to continually replace the stems, I would look at the springs and rubber seats. At one time delta used a straight spring and rubber seat that were just a touch taller than the current tapered spring and shorter (height) rubber seats. This could be your problem, let me know. Regards, Bob.

New part had a plastic spacer on top. I was replacing hot side and handle would not go on. I finally pulled spacer out by accident and handle fit fine for hot side. Bob, thank you for the video. I am fixing a Delta faucet that does not have retainer nuts or bonnet nuts. Is it possible that the cartridge are built in to my faucet and I have to replace the whole faucet, rather than the cartridge? There is definitely no nut, only what looks like a round, dimpled sleeve tightly around the cartridge that doesn't budge when I put the channel locks around it to unscrew it. possibly built in? thanks for your help! Thanks for the video. I need to replace the seat/springs on the hot water faucet several times a year. And every time I do it, I have to do it several times because the first replacement or two will start leaking again. Since I have this problem I usually inventory a couple sets of replacements, store brand from the local Ace hardware store. Could they be getting old while they're sitting on the shelf? Maybe the store brand is sub-standard? I also wonder if the stem assembly has somehow deteriorated in such a way as to grind the seats to an early failure. But to look at the touching parts, they seem smooth. Also, the Ace guy suggested I use a plumbing "grease" on the seats when installing them. Any suggestions?

Try a little silicone lube for faucet stems. Place a small dab in the hole followed by the spring and seat. Should stay in place long enough the get the cartridge installed. BobsPlumbingVideos it is in fact an oem delta, with the package being rp17400. My faucet is the tub style three handle. And the spring is in fact cone shaped like the one I purchased. @BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 9 лет назад
+ronvogt00 First thing is to make sure the water shuts 100%. You don't want want any water seeping which will keep the rubber seat from staying in place. Once the spring is in place I use a thin blade screwdriver or the back end of a dental pic. I place slide seat onto the screwdriver or dental pic guide it into the hole at the base of the faucet and simply slide the seat into place. As I said, make sure no water is seeping thru or the seat will just float right back up. Hope that helps, regards. Bob.

Thanks for the video. I have a bathroom sink with 2 plastic handles. I turned off both the hot and cold shut off and drained both lines. Starting with the cold side, I removed the know and had a terrible time to get the ring around the cartridge off. Finally I proceeded with replacing the stem and seat on both sides and reassembled everything. When I turned on the cold and hot water valve, everything seemed to work fine on the hot and cold side, but after a while I noticed that the cold knob was leaking slightly above the ring that holds the cartridge. The hot side was perfect. After turning the cold water on and off a few times, I was no longer able to shut the water off when turning it in the OFF position. So, I turned off the shut off valve for the cold water to stop the water flow. Now I am in need of some advice as to what I could have done wrong. Could I have damaged the cartridge by turning the bolt too tightly. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Aggie Scott I agree that the nuts that hold the cartridges down are sometimes difficult to remove. A little silicone faucet grease should be applied when reinstalling them. I assume you removed and reinstalled the new cartridges in the exact position you removed them! That being said I also encourage you to use authentic Delta replacement parts. +John Stewart I don't know how old your shut-off valves are, but I've run across situations where pieces of the washers broke off and got caught in the supply tube between the shut-off valve and faucet. Try shutting off the supply valves, remove the cartridge, seats and springs place a cup over the opening (hot or cold) and slowly turn the valves on and see if you have water.

Private Private 1970’s Gerber faucets don’t take cartridges! It’s either a right or left hand stem unit. You also need to look inside at the condition of the faucet seat. Check this video out before you start-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KFrmhYB0yj8.html

BobsPlumbingVideos understood. I did watch the other video, where the insides looked very much like mine. I have run to the local store to confirm that I use flat washers. I’ve replaced the washer for the cold but, have to figure out how to keep the handle from loosening the stem when turned. Well, I guess I shouldn’t have touched this. Seems easy but a bit of a nightmare. Yeah, now, I can’t seem to stop a fine stream of water no mater what I do and I can turn the cold knob almost a full 360. I may need to replace the stem and the seat. There goes my weekend since I’ve never done this before.

@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 9 лет назад
Rita L Coyne If the stem and handle are both metal you might need a handle puller? The metal stems are brass but the handles are usually made out of a die cast material that fuses to the stem. Try using a large flat blade screwdriver and alternate going from one side the the other to try and break the seal. When re-installing the parts always use a waterproof lubricant inside the handle so you can remove it in the future. If they're plastic, try the screwdriver trick!
