Here we go over the famous album cover for Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd to see if it is optically accurate.

Reading this chapter right now :) I love your enthusiasm for making learning this fun and for trying to find the physics applications in unexpected ways!

Yeah the sign conventions intended to make it easier usually make it worse.

@@Prof-Hafner I still don’t get how concave lenses can make it seem like the rays are coming from a focal point when they aren’t

@@sweet_starshine Your eyes and brain don't now that the lens is there. They just trace the rays back to decide where the image is as though there were no lens in place.

@@Prof-Hafner but how do they interpret the image as smaller if the rays are bent upward after they go through the glasses? Looking at the third image on figure 25.39

But why does the light of each wavelength bend? Each photon has dimensions so as the proximal end is dispersed and slowed by the lens and its surface imperfections it experiences a one off torque according to 1. Angle of incidence, greater angle means greater delay between proximal and distal parts of the photon and 2. Density of the silica material, denser means greater decrease in velocity. Both 1 and 2 put a one off torque on the Poynting vector. Blue light has fewer photons of higher momentum h/lamda per wavelength resulting in greater torque on each photon compared with red.

I’ve never heard of that torque based description but I think I can see it.

@@Prof-Hafner Thanks! I believe you solved it yourself with the Poynting vector equation permittivity x c^2 x B x E. The dispersion and the E diminishing are the real changes since permittivity increases to 4.5 but c decreases enough to keep 1/ permeability constant. I saw a straight line graph of silica density vs refractive index so it was a simple matter of putting 2 and 2 together which is as good as my math gets. Great lectures and relaxed yet informative style!

In defense of Pink Floyd, with that hair you are only a beard away from fitting in with them on that picture. Anyways, nice video.

Haha I’m pretty safe then!

There is a splitting into the spectrum at the first air to glass interface. Then a further splitting at the glass to air exit interface. The album cover is actually wrong. Further there is no dark side of the moon. Sun light can hit the moon from the side that we cannot see.

Yes many details aren't correct. It would look pretty boring if they were. :) I was impressed that initial angle is correct, although it may have just been a coincidence.
