I've just completed a new 5-hour Master Class workshop that teaches how to make money shooting stock footage. If that is a topic that interests you, please check it out.
This is some test footage I shot with my PXW-Z90 to test the capabilities of Sony's new Fast Hybrid AF system. This is one of the first camcorders to offer that technology. In many instances, particularly when following fast-moving action, the Fast Hybrid AF usually out-performs what I could do manually. It also is very good at not being fooled by foreground objects or when the subject briefly goes out of frame. There are only a few instances where the focus slipped from the subject in this test shots, but I wouldn't have been 100% perfect even with manual focusing . . . not even close. Very impressive technology.

Many thanks Doug. Great shots. Your footage convinced me that a Z90 will be my first large sensor camcorder. I have been using 1/3” sensor HD cameras like the Sony X180 for the past 20 years. Have used my RX10 for 4K interviews, but it is not as suited to nature videography even though it has the 600mm lens.

Lovely footage, Doug. Any filters being used? Looks like a neutral grad around 30 sec. and 11:30. Did you use a polarizer too?

Thank you. No filters were used onboard the camera, but as with anything I shoot, some adjustments were made in DaVinci Resolve that may appear to look like filters.

a query, I already had the nx 80 and in xavc I have the configuration 100mbs and 120 fps, now I bought the z90 and I cannot configure it to 100mbs and 120fps, could you help me to program it, thanks

HI, the Z90, NX80, and AX700 are similar cameras in many ways, but one of the differences between them is that the Z90 does not have a 120 fps recording format. If you want to shoot slow-motion footage, you need to use the camera's S&Q Motion function. I explain how to use it in my Master Class. vimeo.com/ondemand/z90

This is amazing - thanks for producing and sharing! I am just about to buy the Z90, and I always prefer working in 24FPS just for the "look" and I prefer HD over 4K. In your video it seems that every time you shoot in 24FPS, you are also shooting in 4K.m wondering ...... I am if it's possible to shoot 24FPS in HD? I am also considering buying a second-hand Sony PXW X70 the earlier model of this camera. Do you know if this is also possible with this camera? Many thanks in advance - if and when I do purchase the camera, I will definitely consider your Masterclass, it looks great also!

Hi, yes you can shoot 24p in HD if you choose to with the Z90, NX80, and AX700. I assume that is also possible with the X70, but I have never used an X70 so can't say for sure. If you want to add a second camera to a Z90, I would suggest getting a used NX80 or AX700 so they match visually and have the same menus and other controls.

I just got the FDR-AX700 and I'm running through the Master Class full series. Phew!! :) What range of tripod and mounting system would you recommend for the NX80 / AX700, considering the budget that goes with being restricted to this level of camcorder. I am curious as well about the SD card reader you find suitable (read speed, USB 3.0, stable USB connectivity to a computer port).

I recommend a Sachtler FSB-6 head with the best tripod you can afford. Tripod systems are the most important accessory you can buy and they should outlast your camera by a decade or more. Buy quality and you will not regret it. If you are a hobbyist and the FSB-6 is out of your price range, then a MeVideo tripod and head would be my second recommendation. They are pretty good for the price.

As to your question about SD card readers, two of my MacBook Pros have built-in readers. On my newer MacBook Pro I use a tiny reader from Plugable. It works fine, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it. The slot for the card has a little more play than I would like. But it always works. plugable.com/products/usbc-flash3

No. Why would you want to anyway? Where are you going to distribute or display at 120 fps?

@@DougJensenVortexMedia there are no camcorders in this price class that has a good fps with 4k. I wanna have good fps because it looks smoother. Thanks for telling me. So im looking for a FHD good fps:er. BTW do you know if it is the same with the nx80?

@@WilliamGurebo Yes, the NX80 is the same. In my opinion smoother is not better and that's why theatrical motion pictures are produced at 24 fps.

Ya just looked at fhd and it was terrible. These clips are really good quality. But high fps camcorders 4k cost too much these days. I thought that when i looked on example z90 tests that it was fhd...
