Comparing a set of Rotosound Solo Bass 55 Pressure Wound Strings with a set of regular (but older) Round wound strings. These strings are particularly suited for solos and cleaner riffs

This was helpful, thanks! I think I am going to try a set of the PW on my fretless.

I'm a big fan of Rotosound strings, and I think I might try the Solo Bass strings once I need a new set! I prefer roundwounds that are more worn in in any case since there seems to be more pronounced low-mids, and these seem to have that right off the bat. You have great demos on this channel!

Really like your demos and comparisons mate, it's nice to hear strings being played without a backing track

for me, I *really* like pressurewound strings. the tone is perfect for blues, rock, jazz, basically anything where you don't really want maximum brightness, especially on bright basses like Jazz & Stingray, but you don't want the flatwound "thunk" either. & the *feel* is just super. for me they're faster & more comfortable than roundwounds or flats. They're also great for not gooving the crap out of an uncoated fretless fingerboard while still maintaining interesting lively tone.

thank you for the comparison, the difference is not huge and even if the highs are less pronounced with teh 55, I think it would be better to wait until the rs66ld wears out a bit. Thanks again, this video is really helpful

Thanks for watching! I'm glad it was helpful! Bear in mind that the regular rounds are two years old, maybe using new ones would have been a better comparison

A comparative video I'd like to see is a P bass with Rotosound Swing Bass 66, 45-105 against a J bass with Rotosound Jazz Bass 77, 40-100. The reason? John Entwistle was renowned for playing a P with Rounds but ironically his signature tune My Generation is a J with Flats (Late Bella) but so many La Bella vids already and to hear Rotosound, my choice of string, Rounds vs Flats would be cool, btw Rotosound Jazz Bass strings weren't available til 1966, a year after My Generation was released. Enjoy many of your vids, especially Fender 62 vs 63 pickup comparison, 63 for me👍

Not bad! They seems to be darker compare to roundwound, but not as the flat ones. I will buy this Solo strings to try them! Just to know whick pickups did you put on this jazz bass?
@OliverTobyn

I like these ,but as i'm using a Maple board on my Fender 75th Anniversary Jazz i think Rotosound flats would be better suited but these do sound good but no doubt a good few quid more.. i did think of using half ground Rotosounds but hoping the flat wounds are kinder to the frets on the Jazz...good demo bud...🎸
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
Thanks! I think these ones are kinder to frets, but in the end it's all relative. I've used flats exclusively on one bass and I still see fret wear, so just go with whatever you like... Same goes with maple or rosewood fretboards. While one tends to be brighter than the other (though sometimes I've found brighter sounding rosewood fretboards) it can be easily compensated by EQ. Bottom line is just go with whatever you like, most things can be adjusted anyway or aren't that relevant

@@OliverTobyn ....yeah your not the first person that i have read that says flats don't make that much of a difference to the fret wear bud....cheers

How do you keep 2 yr old strings bright like that?

can we put this string instead of rotosound sh77 on signature fender p bass?
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 месяца назад
Yeah, sure, you can try but you need to tweak the highs differently as these ones have more "zing"
@nunoharris

Hi. Are those strings more similar to the Flats or Rounds? Did they cut more or are similar to the Rounds ? Thanks
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
They are more similar to rounds. Older rounds to be exact

I have a quick question for you. After seeing this video, you did not cut the ends which way is better? And by the way, have you ever tried Fender flatwound stainless steel strings? I really like these a lot. Can you do a demo on these?
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
I generally prefer not to cut string ends on Fender headstocks, maybe just the E string a little. DR strings for instance make insanely long string endings, so I'll cut the E and A, maybe the D string, but never the G string. On basses with smaller headstocks and tuning machines you need to cut them of course. I've never tried them, if I manage to get a set I'll definitely make a demo
