Demolishing An Old Shed - New Shed Project Part 1

In this video I get started on a new project to demolish and remove an old shed that was left at our house by the previous occupants to make space for building a new one. The old shed had been built on improper foundations and had developed a lean. It was also rotten and had woodworm, plus lots of holes, spider webs and even a birds nest! Some of the methods that we used for demolishing the old shed are not recommended! Please be safe! It had to go to create space for a new shed which I'm going to be building from scratch (i.e. not a pre-fabricated one) and in the next episode I will build a floor for the new shed.
Next episode (Shed Floor) : • Building A Shed Floor ...

Really interesting thinking of replacing my old 10x8 shed with a lean to custom workshop into the back wall of my garage. I’m thinking of using some sort of plastic cladding for the outer walls to reduce maintenance and then fill the walls with kingspan. The biggest issue is what to use for the cladding. Great video mate .

I went through a process exactly like this a month ago when me and my dad demolished some sort of a garden shed that was built 50 years ago and then we built a pergola to replace that shed. I can tell that demolishing that old building was much tiring and frustrating than building and designing the pergola :)

Great progress for just a couple of days! Well done. Around here I have seen people tie off some of the timbers or just right at the peak at the top if it has one, and attach it to a pickup truck or tractor and pull forward to bring the whole shed down to the ground. If the recip saw doesn't appeal. Also, pre-built sheds here are a lot more expensive than buying the material and building it yourself, and usually less well-built. Although I took the route buying like new sheds off of Craigslist. There is a very healthy rent to own business in sheds around here and many people after the first part of a year or so default and have them repossessed. Or people sell them off when they are moving. So there are dealers who keep them out on the lot and will deliver them. I got my nicest shed that way and it is super nice. Finished like a real house outside even shutters on the windows. The other one, rougher, I got from a construction guy who had built it at his house but was moving. He was just going to build a new shed at the new house even though it was only 40 miles away. I found a transport guy through the shed businesses and paid him separately. I still came out at about the third the cost of buying it from a dealer New. Same plan and materials but better constructed. It is very common to put shed floor systems on concrete blocks at the corners or perhaps along the rim joist as well, but there would be space below to allow air circulation and prevent infestation by covering those concrete blocks at the corners with metal sheeting overhanging the block. any insulation in the floor should be protected to prevent critters from getting up in it from below. And the corners should really be tied down into the ground for tornados.

I don't know really if there are any regulations there, if it comes down to building sheds. But basically I build them like I would build a strong fence. Which means digging a 1m/3 foot deep hole for the poles and fill them with concrete as well. there are even iron bars that can be used for this (or hybrids) On top you just make a floating floor. I have build a couple of them, some are even still standing after 15 years, with not even a bit of sine of wood issues.

Surprised you went full on botcher to take the roof down ‘cos you’re normally quite pernickety 😃. If that greenhouse had smashed you’d have been picking up the glass for months as I learned the hard way. Interesting project. Looking forward to seeing how the design of your shed pans out. The reason for the gaps around the door and the apparent lean is due to the base not being level. I’ve had this problem on 2 sheds and initially on a third, which I was able to fix once the problem had been identified.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 4 года назад
Thanks Charles. I should imagine this one was level when the shed was installed, but the ground has probably moved a bit since then due to the weather (we've also got a lot of tunelling bunny rabbits around which probably hasn't helped!). I think if proper foundations would have been used it shouldn't have moved, but I'm no expert, just hope that the new shed stays put !

Funny. My first thought on seeing how the shed obscured the lovely view was to get rid of it but not put a new one up in the same place, and then it turned out that you had decided the same 😄 I don't know what you plans are for the new shed but I would recommend damp proofing and pouring a concrete floor. With wet weather, sometimes flooding, and just for the sake of adding stability to the foundation , it should definitely be worth it.

As a non-UK watcher, I'm curious about disposal. Can you just hire a bin, as they do here in Canada and fill it up and have it hauled away? I know that is probably overkill for the shed, but it did still seem like more junk than one van-load.
@retiree1033
@retiree1033 4 года назад
Waste disposal can be very expensive here in UK. A 4-5³ yard "Skip" can be anywhere from £100 - £250 depending on what it is you want to get rid of. Our own local authority in southern England, won't allow vans to use the civic amenity waste site as they're viewed as commercial, which is a good source of income. They have to buy a licence. The only way around that is if the vehicle is the only vehicle in the household and then only for a limited amount of visits in one year. A new twist to the thing is we're having to register our vehicle so presumably they can keep tabs on how many visits you make to the d̶i̶s̶p̶o̶s̶a̶l̶ recycling site. Keith's local authority may be different.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 4 года назад
I think ours is a bit less strict than that (I don't think they view all vans as commercial fortunately!), but waste disposal is no less expensive...

Hey Keith, leaning shed is more to do with no strong corners or diagonal bracing... Probably too late to be saying this now but sure that's my thinking... Crappy construction equals rock from side to side... I suspect the siding had crap staples in crappy soft wood.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 4 года назад
I think it's down to floor movement but your comment about diagonal bracing is interesting - I agree it would make the structure a lot stronger but I've not seen diagonal bracing on a shed before?
@davidshortall9302
@davidshortall9302 4 года назад
@@RagnBoneBrown yeah it's not common to have diagonals but generally each plank of siding has a pin on top and bottom. This works to steady it. I suppose what I was trying to say was that the movement can be caused by planks that are rotten at the nail or pin holes. This allows movement... Anyway, well done... All good for thought. Thanks for the videos! Love them 👍

You aren't supposed to be burning treated and painted timber, it is very toxic! Also as long as you have prepped underneath it is perfectly OK to build off blocks. I think the issue with that shed was most likely lack of ventilation rather than ground movement, which happens all the time.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 4 года назад
it's ok to build off blocks if they're bedded down on to a firm layer of hardcore, or sand and cement, it's not ok if they're just put in to soil as the soil gets wet and then dries out so the ground moves. I also found a lot of bunny rabbit tunnels under the shed, which will also cause the ground to move
