This exclusive video footage by Dezeen shows the demolition and dismantling of Kisho Kurokawa's metabolism Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo
The dismantling of the iconic Nakagin Capsule Tower, which was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, comes after the building fell into disrepair.
Footage shows the Nakagin Capsule Tower being demolished and dismantled
The Nakagin Capsule Tower was built in 1972 in the Ginza neighbourhood of Tokyo. The tower is one of the remaining examples of metabolism architecture - a post-war architectural movement that rose out of the 1960s.

The capsules will be given to museums all over the world, so not all is lost. In this way their positive effect, inspiration etc. on the public will probably be bigger than if the structure would just stay in Tokyo.

It's true that the building hardly stands out against the new buildings, and the thought that it won't disappear completely is very positive. 👍 However, I would have liked to see the tower rebuilt in another place, and preferably not in Japan :(

A crime against Art! The only Metabolism building in Japan and they demolish it.

@Nobody Important You could not buy it. There were ownership issues. And I don't know any rich people. Also, if the building was restored 25 years after it was built, as intended, it would be in much better condition and asbestos free with no need for demolition. All I could do was persuade a Japanese Art history tutor to add an extra class on Metabolism. I wish I was in a position to do something to save the building. My comment was based on my appreciation of the Design. It made me very sad to see that the Japanese didn't care enough though I know for a fact that there was a lot of resistance to the demolition decision that unfortunately didn't work. I was expecting protesters glued and chained all over the place. Alas, the Japanese protest differently. They'll regret it, I'm sure but it'll be too late.

It seems like a building that makes sense for remote work. Pod style living for people who are going to live at mine sites or similar places for a couple of months at a time, but to purchase what looks like a single room which is barely 8 feet wide as a long term home seems very depressing, and then they reveal that each pod contains asbestos. The only real upside is that they would have been easy to replace and upgrade materials without knocking down the entire building. These would be pretty amazing in the 'Internet of Things' era where they could push the idea of a 'metabolist structure' even further, forming a true network where people can share files and be connected in social media groups across the building.

well if you look around you'll see that most of the capsules are moldy and weren't built to really last the test of time. i mean just look at it. while it does look very cool its just going to rot over the next few decades, not to mention that its filled with asbestos. big rip

I love that building and have been there a couple of times but if you have seen it in the last years you would understand why it is being taken apart. It was simply beyond repair and many capsules were completely destroyed, filled with water. There was almost no one living there and it was wrapped in a net so falling building pieces were less of a security hazard. Iconic building but couldn't last longer than 50 years.

As someone who likes traditional classical derived architecture as well as is a stern critic of Utopian philosophy, I must admit I cherish the fall of this building and the dystopic regimentation and compulsion such fantasies of covering everyone's "needs" leads to. Meanwhile in the past 50 years classical buildings pre dating the capsule tower by centuries has been repurposed several times, and will continue to do so as our lives and use of buildings change, while their beauty and malleable nature continues to attract new users. Re purposing a beautiful piece of classical architecture (pastiche) is simply more attracting to pretty much everyone than finding a cold steel tower to attach you "pod" on. Metabolism ended up being more artificial than what it sought to challenge. I salute the demolition of a failed pipe dream!

Yeah, the opinion about a building of someone who never studied architecture, design or who doesn't have any interest in art in general matters more than someone who spends his life to imagine, create and analyze buildings. Architects and designers should focus on creating things for consumers' personal pleasures instead of questioning the world and society. Design is just a marketing tool and not a way to change the world. I love you man , let's have kids to give them the only TRUE way to see architecture ❤
