Great demo. I always try to place myself back in that time to imagine the excitement this generated as a group would gather at a home for viewing. Something many were never exposed to before. I suppose the ML was costly and owned by the more well to do and affluent.

It's pretty ironic what happened to the factory. These things were notorious for being a fire hazard (obviously, at over 4000° F) but have also been known to explode on occasion. Chemical impurities were usually the cause. That being said, having one all original and still functional, at over 110 years, is incredible. That level of purity was already one in a thousand before it left the factory. EDIT: Sorry, I didn't notice the Ebay listing before I wrote this. A bit of trivia nonetheless.

A local hotel man wanted to erect a theater here in the 1920's. The city feared there could be a fire which was a frequent occurence for the reason you stated. He was granted approval only if the projection booth was separate from the structure. To meet this rquirement he designed the theater backwards with the projection booth in the alley and the screen on the wall close to the entrance. That building still stands here and as of a few years ago, so was the projection booth which extended into the alley.

That is very nice I have one that pre dates yours. mine is also made by A.T. Thompson but mine is self contained ( no Electric) Mine is powered by carbon rods submerged in water creating acedaline gas. I have all the working parts to this magic lantern, including the carbon rods. This projector was used to present a show for the red cross have the tickets that were given out for the show. Good luck on your auction. Have a blessed day

I have been pondering the use of the term, "Magic Lantern." It makes sense that the hand drawn, whimsical slides pre-1900 were called magical because they were meant to entertain. However, once you get into the larger, photographic slides and textual sides used in advertising, I don't think the term "magic" applies any longer. The later slides were meant for use in movie theaters, public spaces as lecture slides and education, not entertainment. I would term them "lantern slides" at best.

Thanks for sharing but it is funny that after 100 years and a mountain of technology later the camera work for this video is absolutely atrocious. It is still nice of you to share though. Thanks.

If I may chime in, it all depends on condition and subject. I have paid $20 for a subject I really liked and as low as $1 for something as ordinary as cartoon slides. Average price seems to be $5-$8.
