This is a comparison of the audio recorded via internal microphones and external microphone between the old Panasonic HDC-TM300 camcorder and the current Panasonic HC-V750 camcorder.
It is clear that the new device is markedly inferior in terms of audio noise and distortion to the old one. Very disappointing!
For the impatient, the technical tests start at 3 minutes 20 seconds (or 4 minutes 20 seconds if you want to skip the test intro as well). Please listen to this on headphones to best judge the audio quality. I have encoded this video with a 256kbit/s audio soundtrack.
Edit: Camcorder now returned to supplier and Canon HF-G30 on order - let's hope for a better audio experience with that device (albeit at twice the price!). Watch this channel for a demo when it arrives.
Edit 2: Just had a couple of hours playing with my new Canon HF-G30. Wow, what a solid piece of kit. Should have ordered it in the first place. All the features of the TM300 that were missing on the V750 plus many more. Zebras - hooray! Internal and external sound recordings great. No pretending to create surround sound, just straight stereo, with Linear PCM as one of the audio format options. Am really looking forward to taking it outside to do some real tests. Watch this channel for some demo footage!

For the benefit of others, my 750 is the same as this one and the response of Panasonic is the same also. I feel very let down with this and and will not be going Panasonic's way again. If you reduce the vol level and talk quietly into an external mic, you can hear a noise/ distortion very easily. Something that Panasonic refused to admit to on two return visits. My only option is to record to an external sound recorder, and that is something that I wanted to avoid !.

A couple of thoughts here. First, you compare a camera complete with five microhpones and alot of other tech to a single mono source costing about a third of the price. I certain quality difference is fair I would say. That said what your video and indeed several other similar tests on youtube, acctually demonstrates are the difference between different capture patterns. Notice how the NTGs sound almost dry, no room at all. That's because they take up sound comming from a very narrow directional band. Sometimes you want that, for instance when you record dialog. The V750 on the other hand take up sound more omnidirectionally or at least in a much less directional way. That is why you get that boxy roomy sound as the microphones capture not only your voice but also the reflections from the room, placing you in the environment. Your NTGs wont capture ambient sounds of the surroundings very well, the v750 will. Both types have its uses. The delay if I understood you correctly is on the headphone out, not on the recorded sound, and therefore in my mind not a big problem. Don't think many people will record from that output (nor do I think Panasonic intended that) and timing when monitoring is not that critical, you always have the real world source to listen to. Heard some gating noise things, but that might be youtube compression. Anyway thanx for an interesting video... /Freddy...

+Fredrik Waara Hi Freddy - Thanks for your comments. On reflection, I probably demonstrated too many audio features of the two machines, with the result that the video got rather long, and the central focus of the exercise may have been lost. The difference between single and multiple mics was not the point here. My concern was that with an equivalent mono mic fed into each of the two recorders via their respective mic sockets, the V750 audio was noticeably distorted compared to that of the TM300 (a similar machine aimed at the same end-user market). The distortion manifested itself as the 'gating noise' that you observed. I believe that distortion to be an artifact of the digital audio encoding on the V750, which was not present on the TM300; this is what made the V750 unacceptable for my application. Although the audio quality of RU-vid videos is not fantastic, the difference between the two machines is noticeable here, if listened to on headphones, which would seem to exonerate RU-vid's sound in this case. Others have said here that they are happy with their V750s' audio. Certainly when using the internal mics, the wash of ambient background sound can make a clinical assessment of the sound quality difficult. YMMV, as they say! Cheers!

OK, it seems I missed your point. Sorry! So just to recap, if I understand you correctly this time, the main issue you have is with the input amp/ad-converter and/or the encoding process from that source. The TM-300 should obviously be better, but we should of course not accept anything from V750 (yes, I have one too, but are not yet so familiar with it). I'll watch your video again and see if I get the point. Since I havn't uploaded anything myself to youtube it's hard to know what is youtube compression or crappy conversion work and what is just a bad source. Anyway, thanx for clearyfying... /Freddy...
@reqordist

+Fredrik Waara That's it! By the way, the TM300 also does 5.1 sound from its internal mics, so I'd have expected the encoding process to be same - but design teams move on, even within single manufacturers, and new engineers may decide to implement things differently. Hope you're enjoying the results from your V750 - I look forward to seeing some videos when you've got to grips with the machine. Cheers!

I just bought a Panasonic HC-V770 camcorder, everything is great on the camera " except " the sound quality. To be blunt here the sound quality on the V770 " sucks " really bad. No matter what setting or frequency change you make the sound quality is really bad. The only way to get decent sound with your video is either use a lapel microphone, or a shotgun microphone. Or you could use an good external recording device and sync the sound later to the video in a video editor. Very disappointed in Panasonic, they use to make good products. It seems that they just tossed in the cheap audio system on the camera as an after thought. Other than that, the camera is a very good camera.

Also slow zooming is a pain with the v770. pull or push the zoom lever one millimeter further and the zoom goes too fast. Image quality is super for its price class. The slow zooming is not available at the remote control. I made a precision servo to control the zooming to prevent I f up my recordings.

I agree about the zoom speed - it seems to be a common problem with most camcorders. Have you done a demonstration video of your zoom servo - sounds interesting!

reqordist, I do not have a working example at hand but I do have a video of a first impression of the zoom system I created. It does work perfectly and I use it nowdays all the time. Here the basic demo video which shows the system working but it was not finetuned at that moment ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SWwOHZpottM.html Here a photo of my rig with the zoom system implemented: www.janvalk.nl/video/ChrisIrwinGarderen2018/large/DSC_0167_01b.JPG

I've noticed the poor internal audio quality on Panasonic HC-V770, even increasing the volume control when videoing. Found this out listening and comparing the same video recordings on both my Canon and LUMIX cameras. If ordinary cameras can output higher volumes why can't Panasonic achieve the same quality?

Do you know if they have solved this sound problem with the HC-750 with the replacement model, the HC-770? They look pretty much like the same camera and the audio comparison between the two looks like the 770 only comes with Dolby Digital 5.1 while the 750 comes with the same as well as Dolby Digital 2Channel. Just bought a used 750 based on the video quality. If I need to, I may just use a shotgun mic attached to a digital recorder for the sound I need. I need a 3rd camcorder for filming so I was looking to purchase the 770 also. I wish I could afford the Canon XA-20. I already have an XA-10 and absolutely love that camera but need the 20x optical zoom of the HC-750 or 770.

i think it is subjective, there is nothing wrong with the sound quality of my v750, my biggest complaint it the ridiculous hot shoe attachment and trying to attach my shotgun microphone!!
@computerjantje
@computerjantje 5 лет назад
I own a 750 and I am a professional sound technician. The image quality and stabilization is absolute fantastic for its price class. The audio is so bad I never use the camera without an external audio recorder anymore. I have red the 770 has the sound improved but not sure if that is true. And by the way, the camera has a cold-shoe not a hot-shoe.

Last summer I sent the V750 to Panasonic's repair center in Texas. Even sent them a print out of the low audio charting. They said the camera checked out fine. Total crap! Why would Panasonic offer a great video camera with poor sound? "Enhanced Sound" they say. I should of stayed with Sony. B&H said they would give me $225 for my camera, its like new. Bottom line..... Panasonic camcorders have the poorest audio recording. Hell my $40 SKY GW1dash cam has better audio!

Ok I have shot some footage at an event in a club with a similar panasonic camcorder built in 5.1 mic, sound sounds distorted when the band sings, home can I fix this audio for my video footage pls help???
@reqordist
@reqordist 5 лет назад
Unfortunately this is different from the distortion I describe here, which is quite subtle - it sounds like you've totally overloaded the camcorder's audio inputs. There's no real solution to that, I'm afraid - once you have squashed your signal into a square wave, there's no way to recover the original waveform. Been there - got that T-shirt :-(

I just bought a Panasonic HC-V770 HD camcorder a few months ago and it has " really bad " sound quality in any of the setting. Other than the sound quality from the build in 5 microphones, the rest of the Camera IMHO is a good camera. If you want sound quality that doesn't make you cringe when watching your videos, using either a lapel microphone, shotgun microphone, or wireless microphone is the only way to get good or decent sound quality in your videos. I am VERY disappointed in Panasonic and the sound quality on this camcorder. To think that Panasonic use to make reel to reel tape decks that had good sound quality. It isn't that they don't know how to do it, they just went " CHEAP " when it came to the sound quality on these HD camcorders.

Any response from Panasonic yet? Any advice on any other camcorders around the 500 pound mark with decent external mic input and high quality image? Many thanks!
@reqordist
@reqordist 9 лет назад
Hi Chris - Panasonic's view was that I should return it to the supplier or send it to their repair facility for investigation. I thought it better to return it (John Lewis in the UK operate a 90-day 'happy returns' policy), so that's what I did. Then I bit the bullet and bought a Canon G30 at twice the price. Given my experience with the V750, I decided to step up out of the purely consumer range, and am very happy with that choice so far. I don't think there is anything else with an external mic input around the £500 mark these days. It seems that the consumer-level camcorder is an endangered species and rapidly becoming extinct! Hopefully, I'm now sorted in the camcorder department for the next 5 years or so.

Hi - I have a question, what audio mixer were you using?
@reqordist
@reqordist 9 лет назад
FirstPersonGamer Hi - I did not use any hardware audio mixer for this video. The sounds from the VC750 and TM300 were recorded onto their respective camera cards and downloaded to my PC, where they were edited together in Sony MovieStudio Platinum. The narration was recorded direct into MovieStudio via an M-Audio FW1814 audio interface.
@XxMrBakiXx
@XxMrBakiXx 9 лет назад
reqordist Ok! Thanks! I did notice the camera card was horrible for the VC750 but the video quality is astronomically better than the TM300's.
@reqordist
@reqordist 9 лет назад
FirstPersonGamer Definitely! I had borrowed the TM300's immediate successor (can't remember the model number - TM900?) from a friend, and had found the video to be dramatically improved, in terms of image sharpness in general and low-light performance in particular, and its audio quality was at least as good as the TM300. Sadly, by the time I got round to buying a second camera, that model had been discontinued in favour of the VC750 series, which maintained the improved video quality but dropped the ball as far as audio went. Oh, well, you can't win 'em all!

To me it sounds like a defective driver. Way too much echo and distortion. It's more than just poor sound. Where was the camera made?
@reqordist
@reqordist 9 лет назад
Martin the Guitarist Hi Martin. Not sure what you would class as a 'driver' in this instance, since the distortion was clearly audible when live-monitoring and replaying direct from the unit's headphone socket (i.e. no external computer involved). It sounds to me like a mismatch between the encode and decode components of the device's internal codec circuitry. Either that or the basic recorded audio data channel bit-rate was so low that the codec could not hide the intervening distortion. Certainly a defect there somewhere, but whether of design or implementation - who knows? Can't tell you where it was made, I'm afraid,as I returned it in January. Most likely China - very few consumer AV items are made in Japan these days!
@martintheguitarist
@martintheguitarist 9 лет назад
reqordist I meant the DSP that converts the analog audio signal from the external mic to digital. I suspect yours was a faulty batch because many older reviews complain about it but not the newer ones. The better Canon cameras are still made in Japan like the G20 and G30. Though I think the quality of manufacturing in South Korea and Taiwan is better. I had some stuff working well that was made in China but generally it's a gamble. Companies make stuff there to reduce costs and not to improve quality.

All you have proved is that for truly professional sound quality in voice recordings, that an external recorder should be used. This is nothing new; there are several professional broadcasters' and film makers' web sites I have sought advice from (for the past several years), that always strongly recommend the use of an external sound recorder when using any camera. Professional TV interviewers have been using a separate sound recorder, with a boom microphone held above the top edge of the camera frame. I have seen professional broadcasters shooting on location, using boom microphones with a guy or girl holding an external microphone above the heads of the participants/actors.
@reqordist
@reqordist 9 лет назад
Hi Neil. What you say about the benefits of using external recorders versus the built-in capability of low-end camcorders / DSLRs is common knowledge. However, my observations here are that the audio quality of this particular camcorder was so dramatically worse than that of its immediate predecessor, and indeed all previous domestic camcorders that I have used, that it warranted special mention. I think you will agree on listening to the video soundtrack that the TM300's audio quality is very useable. In fact, of the several external field recorders that I have bought and used over the last few years, the TM300's audio quality is on a par with most of them. Combined with a Rode NTG-2/Windjammer and a boompole, I have captured very clear interview dialogue without the complication of an external recorder, and of course no need to mess about syncing in post. It is tempting to think that just because a recorder has XLR mic inputs, its noise performance will outperform ones with unbalanced inputs, but that is not always the case. A couple of examples spring to mind, but that's straying off-topic!
@neilruedlinger4851
@neilruedlinger4851 9 лет назад
reqordist Thank you for the clarification. In my research, hard core professional broadcasters and film makers also point out that it's best to avoid using any camera's integrated microphones, and for the best sound quality, strongly recommend Sennheiser boom microphones for voice and surrounding environment's sounds and a multi-channel recorder, and some mention a mixing console. Here's a link to a site in which these points are discussed: www.gearslutz.com/board/remote-possibilities-acoustic-music-location-recording/44846-shotgun-mics-video-what-buy.html In a web site where they review budget external sound recorders, they mention that if you ask ten sound engineers what are the best microphones and recorder to use for a particular filming set up, you'll get ten different answers: www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/audio/tips-solutions/what-works-you-guide-dslr-audio I think this comes down to the budget, and the work practices of the particular Recording Engineer, along with the needs of the film set.

I bought one of these as a backup. I sent it back next day after testing it. It is a really badly thought out device, apart from the truly APALLING AUDIO. What fool designer put a hotshoe at the rear of this camera ? As soon as you see that, you know it has been designed by idiots and that you are going to have problems - any attached shotgun mic will obscure the zoom rocker.You don't need to be a brain surgeon to know not to do that. I always use dual system audio, but that should be for backup purposes really, not because a camera's internal audio circuitry is so poor. But most of these low-end consumer cameras and DSLR's have this audio problem - it is a disgrace. But this V750's audio is not just a disgrace , it is truly unacceptably poor, even by the standard of consumer-level camcorders.

IMPORTANT: Seems to be fixed with the V770 / V777 now - Got it today and tested it quite intensively. (With a Sennheiser ME2 lav directly AND a Sennheiser G2 wireless kit - So also with a battery powered source. Works fine.) Tomorrow I´ll test it with the new VMPR / VideoMic Pro Rycote. I hope it´s working as well as with the Sennheiser G2 kit. (My actual settings for the G2: -20db sender, 0db receiver, -27db at the V770 / V777. Btw.: There´s no difference in using AGC on or off mode - Quality is 1:1 the same! And at -27db the V770 / V777 is REALLY good base noise wise! At least with the G2 kit.)

+AustrianGeek That's good news. Let's hope the V750 was a one-off design problem. Enjoy your reviews, by the way!

THX. Yes. It´s good news (at least now the V777 makes more sense - Instead of only giving HDR and twin camera modes with your smartphone as software features ^^). Btw.: VideoMic Pro (Rycote edition) is also working fine. You just need to lower the internal preamps as low as possible (and pretest the levels at home before shooting with new equipment). It´s also better / important to avoid the last two level indicators of the V777 (as then the sound is just A LITTLE bit "stressed" sounding). And with lower levels you have more room for unexpected higher input levels. Btw.: My actual setting for the VideoMic: (If someone don´t want to test around that much.) Around -15db at the V777 and 0db at the VMPR (+20db boost is a little bit too much for the V777. At least at closer distances.)
