Mistakes: 1. Pepper and Bear Spray = weapons coming across border 2. Saying you were coming for 2 months (vague) and only itinerary item is the super famous Banff anyone can name. Not credible 3. You seem unemployed without obvious reason to go back to the US. Could become a burden to the Canadian taxpayer 4. Pretty limited ties to the US. 5. The woman failed to come into the office initially. That’s not the right way to do it. When they say come in everyone in the vehicle needs to come in.

As someone with lots of immigration experience and border crossings here are the issues 1. No ties to the US.. usually a house or rental to show you have ties to the US and not going to stay. Never tell a border patrol you work remote. Provide your physical office location 2. No accommodation in Canada.. you have no plans on place to stay and activities to do. 3. Bringing in contraband.. when she asked you bear spray you hesitated so the border patrol agent was under the impression you might have more you’re hiding or forgot 4. No clear itinerary .. the 2 months you planned seemed too vague. They’re afraid it can turn into 3 months

You can work remotely from anywhere as long as your Employer is American and Canadian customs agents know that very well. Are you sure they're working illegally in Canada? Don't most countries define working in their country as doing an activity for an organization or company based in that country for which you derive remuneration, monetary or otherwise? Under that definition that would include volunteering, which I know many countries do. In their case, their not volunteering or working for a Canadian based company or organization and so not taking a position away from a Canadian. Therefore, they're not earning Canadian money. The company is based in the US and they earn American dollars which they then bring into Canada to spend. I would understand it if they didn't have an independent source of income or were breaking the law. Maybe the guy misunderstood the term working remotely; he heard "working" and stopped listening. I can understand maybe understand the worry about them wandering indefinitely(although even there, they clearly stated that they planned to go home in a couple of months), but working illegally? By that broad and loose definition, if you were on vacation in a country and you wrote a letter, checked the email, or made a work-related phone call you would be technically working. If I am wrong, maybe the law needs to be updated.

I’ve been crossing border multiple times a week for the past 21 years. Very important - NEVER LIE, and always have a purpose or definitive answer as to what you plan to do. Not having a job, or a house to go back to… is a big red flag. Having the pepper spray isn’t an issue, you’d only be required to just leaving it behind. Visitors are always welcome… just have a plan so you have answers for your itinerary.

Yes, I crossed with a couple of friends shortly after the border reopened from COVID. We were questioned quite hard on our plans because they were more vague for enjoying the city we were headed to. Regardless of whether you are entering Canada or the United States, you have to convince the border agents that you have sufficient motivation to return to your home country…things such as real estate, close family ties, jobs, bank accounts, etc. will do that. The pepper spray very likely had little to nothing to do with your denied entry. My take is that it had everything to do with your stated length of stay, along with no itinerary and no stated return date. Most nations on earth require visitors to show their departure date, itinerary or at least first address, have a cap on the amount of time you can stay on a visitors visa, if working then you must have a working visa, etc. When entering the USA years ago a group of us had to provide our address where we were staying, and answer the question about why we were visiting. Border Force have to know these things, they have a broad range of trouble-makers to detect and turn away for all kinds of issues. In Italy I had to hand over my passport at each accommodation so they could let the local police know a tourist was there, they would hand it back some hours later. But I was prepared because I had read travel guides, etc and am also keen to check government websites including my own, to be prepared. All travellers have a responsibility to acquaint themselves with requirements of travel.

I doubt pepper spray had anything to do with it, they give people the option to abandon things such as pepper spray. The reason you got denied, is working remotely, essentially you are working from Canada... you could be seeking to work and stay without authorization. The oness is on you to prove your return.

When I went to Canada's with a friend last September it took less than five minutes. My guess it was the "two months". Of course you're on an RV so no hotel bookings. And: you admitted you want to work in Canada ("my company allows us to work from everywhere"). So the Canadian border officer presumably assumed you'll stay there to work. Didn't you show a lease for a house or apartment in the US? Hint: CBP would have asked the same questions if you were Canadian trying to do 2 months in the US with the same story ..

It really helps to have strong ties to your home country: A job, permanent home address, bank account, etc. I remember when I drove from my home to Niagara Falls, ON Canada, when I got to the border check point the agent asked me what I do for work, a long with a few other questions and I figured it was to help him determine whether or not I was gonna try to overstay. Thankfully he was pretty cool throughout the whole process (just doing his job), and my answers satisfied him and he let me through

If I were to show up at the US border and even mention the phrase "I am going to work remote while in the US and have no residence in Canada" they would deny me and send me right back as well. You leaned a big lesson about international travel, this could have all been avoided with a few phone calls to get proper information - there are numerous embassies, consulates, hotlines for CBSA (our border patrol) and government websites. All could have helped this process. I do hope in the future you take the time, do it right and come visit us, you will not regret it.

After searching all my stuff and even my photos she tried to get me on something even wondering why I was still "un-married" at age 45 and whether it was "by choice" (direct quote) ............... but she couldn't find anything so eventually a senior male officer let me enter (after the female guard was holding up everyone else on the bus). I was age 45, travelling alone and had wanted to see Alaska since childhood, have NEVER 'done drugs" or anything else, and when I got to Alaska it seemed most people HATED ME for being CANADIAN................. as if I was some "dangerous and undesirable ALIEN from Russia, the Middle East or Iran". Once i forgot to get my friends' address i was going to stay at and I wouldn't be allowed in without it, took an hour to get a hold of them and then It was okay. I think it was more your 2 month plans to go to Banff than the pepper spray , unfortunately :( I wish our system wasn't like this...

My wife and I went to Canada for a wedding two weeks ago. We live in Ohio and crossed over at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, MI. I'm a US citizen, and my wife is a US green card holder with a Philippines passport. I expected it to be more painful than it was, but was pleasantly surprised when the agent asked the usual questions (i.e. where do you live, why are you visiting Canada, and how long will you be here). I had the wedding invitation ready to share if needed, but he asked nothing further and just said, "thank you." As others here have said in your case, maybe the pepper spray wasn't the issue, but rather the length of your stay. Still...I can tell immediately that you are both decent folks who simply want an adventure. I thought border agents had a sixth sense about people. Will being denied this time make it harder to go back in the future? I think you have to wait a certain amount of time before trying to cross again...or at least I thought I read that somewhere.

You will have all of those issues no matter what country you try to go to, with the answers you gave to the border patrol/immigration. It wasn't the pepper spray, it was the answers you gave to the questions as others have stated. From now on, give clear concise answers to their questions. If they want dates, give them actual dates for example a return date of August 31. If they want an address give them an address, like a parents home where your belongings are stored. If you work remotely, give the company office address and phone number. If they want to know what port of depearture/entry back tomthe US, go on a map and pick one even if it isn't the one you actually end up going through, but do this prior to your departure to Canada. If anyone asks, just tell them that your plans had changed. If you bring contraband in, it will be confiscated. Definitely no guns and/or ammunition or illegal drugs into Canada. AT. ALL. The guns and/or ammo will be confiscated, and depending on which port of entry you arrive at, you may be denied entry or free to move forward. Illegal drugs will get you detained and arrested. It wasn't the pepper and bear spray that got you denied entry, those would have been confiscated and you would have been free to go. It was the vague answers to the rest of the questions that were given that resulted in the unfortunate outcome.

The purpose of your visit must follow certain legal requirements . Your itinerary must be made plain and simple. No weapons, knives (other than kitchen knives, etc.), no bear, CS or pepper spray...keep things simple. Have enough money in local domination for your stay. Do not plan on working without a work permit. Be polite, explain your situation openly. Hiding anything is grounds for refusal to enter. Your frustration and disappointment is shared amongst many Canadians. Our country just isn’t what it was pre-pandemic. Many Canadians are frustrated. I have crossed land borders and also ferry crossing to and from Canada and the USA. When entering the USA as Canadian citizen it seems that the expectation is that length of stay is satisfied with a date of departure. I doubt I have ever been absolutely specific with an exact date. But I do always have a be home by date. Family and friends also appreciate knowing that date. Bear spray vs pepper spray. I honestly don’t know the difference. It seems to me that this could be the issue. Entering the USA 🇺🇸 one is acceptable and not the other. I understand it is expensive and would seem ridiculous to throw it away. I have had mine for years and never used it. I keep it in the van, it is it at all uncommon to encounter a bear. I guess it is similar to having fire extinguishers, first aid kits, a spare tire, etc. I hope not to need these things. I carry them all on my van as part of my safety plan. I hope not to need my CPR mask but I have a couple of them on aboard always. I never tossed out my Bear Spray. Seems that it would be irresponsible to toss it into a garbage bin. I would surrender it at a border crossing if it were an issue. I thought that would be a far better option than a trash bin? I am new to your channel. I might power watch your videos. Going through any borders, I am as open and honest as I can be. I have set dates to when the vacation starts and ends, take off my glasses and hats and both of us go to the side office if directed right away. The pepper spray may have been as issue as Canada views any weapons as differently as Americans can imagine. Yes we can buy this stuff at any outdoor store, but we're talking about a border here. Once a buddy and myself were arriving in US to go golfing for 3 days. Two middle age guys in a decent car with clubs in the backseat, with an actual destination and we were detained for a couple hours. The reason? None other than the fact we were crossing a border, stuff happens.

for some odd reason, the "risk" that you might try to stay and/or work is a bigger concern than anything else. they're really tough on this. I know people who were going to a weekend convention, but were denied because CBSA feared they might do some paid work during those two days! If you watch the "Border Security" show, Canadian guards routinely turn people away when the amount of clothes and/or supply of cash doesn't seem to line up with the length of time they're supposed to stay in Canada. Like, they're crazy picky about these things.

Just the fact that you are basically nomads will make it harder to cross any border for a lengthy visit. Especially when you don't have any concrete plans to your visit it makes it sound kinda suspicious to the border attendants. Unfortunately this exact scenario of having a long and unplanned visit to any country is one of the main ways illegal immigrants get across borders and don't leave. This is especially a problem for Canada as there are not really many other ways to immigrate to Canada illegally

You can't legally work in Canada without a work permit from Canada. Remote working to a US job from Canada is considered working in Canada. You are better off saying you are on vacation and having firm plans on when you will be back to work in the US. Your employer is also not likely to be happy hearing that you are working outside your state, let alone outside the US, as they need to pay unemployment taxes where you are located, not where your work is. Some countries have digital nomad visas.
