Denied to get a flight to the Galapagos Islands? | Trip Report | Travel Vlog
Hi Guys, hope everyone is well 🙂
This video is about our trip report how to get to the Galapagos Islands and why we would be banned to get the flight to the Galapagos Islands, so hopefully, you will not make the same mistake!
To get the flight to the Galapagos - Baltra we went to the airport 2,5 hours in advance, everything beautiful, well planned, very happy, but you should be at Quito/Guayaquil airport earlier and I am going to tell you why.
Everyone who is going to get the flight to go to the Galapagos Islands, including Ecuadorians and foreign people, need to get a Transit Control Card and go through custom checked bags for Galapagos to have your baggage checked.
To get the Transit Control Card and do this extra check the bags for Galapagos Islands, you need to go to the Consejo de Gobierno del Régimen Especial (Government Council of the Galápagos Special Regime), where they basically are going to check your documents and check your bags to make sure you are not taking camping equipment or any seeds, fresh/cooked food or things which will put the Galápagos Islands ecosystem in danger, and also you have to pay $20 each person
The documents you need to present are:
- Passport
- PCR test up to 96 hours (because of the COVID)
- Salvoconducto (the hotel/hostel should send it to you)
To flight to the Galapagos Islands is mandatory to have a hotel/hostel booked, and Salvoconduto is a document that the hotel certified you will be there. Don't need to book for all days, we booked only for the first days, once we didn't know where we would be after it, and it was enough.
Our main complication to get the flight was because our hostel didn't mention this Salvoconducto document. So without it, they didn't let us get on the flight.

I was sure glad to hear you made it at the end of your video. We arrived here May 10th and had a very short 2-hour window to connect. We were quite worried. It turned out there was no line up so we got to the front for our transit visa right away and it was very simple. They didn't ask us about our hotel, just our passport information in the length of our stay. We then got our luggage check through the scanner and then right onto security. We made it with over 40 minutes to spare. We don't know if this will be the common experience for others, but this is how it went for us. The Galapagos is a beautiful place.

@Zornan Richards can you comment on the airport procedures from your recent trip this past Sept 2022? In other words... What are all the fees and steps to be able to visit the Galapagos please? Tips in most affordable places to stay in the Galapagos? Lastly, was it worth it? Thanks kindly!

I watched that whole video waiting to hear that you got denied, because I wanted to know why, but you weren't denied and actually got on the flight. Bit of a misleading title? The whole experience for me was simple, quick, no issues. Not sure how you didn't know about the Salvoconducto though, it's mentioned everywhere when you're doing research post-covid for this trip. The only issue I had is that Latam charged me an extra $350 dollars when I arrived because somehow I bought an Ecuadorian ticket. Not really sure how that was possible as I just bought it on the Latam site. I ended up chilling for hours near the gate because I was super early - absolutely no queues, not even one person in front of me at the Transit box thing, or either baggage checks. Glad you didn't get denied and you actually got to go though.

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad to hear you didn't have issues getting the Transit Control Card, in our case they did say we couldn't get on the flight, we only just got something sorted and could so easily not have been able to get on the flight. We want to help other people avoid this scenario of being denied.

IMPORTANT COVID info before go: - To enter the Galapagos you need a PCR test taken within 96 hours. - Salvo Conduto - A document that your hostel or hotel needs to fill and send to you - once you book your accommodation, send to them: name, number of passport and nationality of all travellers. - Get to the Ecuador mainland Airport 3 hours earlier (yes really!) - In the airport, you need to do an extra check for Galapagos where they are going to check your documents (PCR test, passport, salvo conduto and bags), if everything is ok they charge $20 per person and you are clear to get on the plane to Galapagos. These extra checks can take more than two hours, so get in the airport very early.

I went to the Galapagos in pre-Covid days (2017) and even then there was a lot of red-tape involved. They seem to work in slow-motion at the airport. While we were on the plane waiting for departure, the plane stuck around past the expected departure time to take in more late-arrivals. And upon arrival at the Galapogos airport and before the luggage could be claimed, they laid out all the luggage from the plane and set a sniffing dog over all the stuff. 2 passenges had their luggage opened to verify contents (not likely drugs but rather unauthorized food items).

Thanks for the info, and you seem to be a nice couple, but please be honest with your video thumbnail caption. You were not denied the flight. This is the kind of click-bait video thumbnail that makes many people looking at videos for information lose trust and despises travel vloggers, travel influencers, travelling couple videos, etc.
