Contributing writer Tony Guerrero takes a closer look at some great mutes from Denis Wick. For more than a quarter of a century, Denis Wick mutes have set standards of excellence that have made them the choice of the world's finest brass players. There are now mutes for most brass instruments, from piccolo trumpet to tuba. Brilliant straights, versatile cup and ET and innovative practice mutes, all beautifully made with perfect intonation.
About Denis Wick:
Denis Wick has had for many years an international reputation as trombonist, brass teacher and conductor. Having studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music, his first professional appointment was in the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra as the second trombonist. He became principal trombonist of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1952, leaving in 1957 to join the London Symphony Orchestra, also as principal trombonist, and remained there until his retirement in 1988. During his time with the London Symphony, which eventually became the longest tenure of a principal chair in the history of the orchestra, he played under many of the world's greatest conductors.

That cup mute is actually 3 mutes in one. You can pull the black part out and that's a straight mute, the adjustable cup mute and if you put the cup in backwards you can use it the same as the last one in this video :) its a great thing

hmm i see, it sounded like the 20's for me because of a song from 1928 named "the mooche" by lonnie johnson that has a similar instrument sound like that near the end.

What mute would you recomend that lowers the volume of the trumpet best?

+MrWallerand A practice mute is best if you're in a place where you can't make too much noise (eg: apartment). Otherwise, if you can only afford to get one mute an adjustable cup mute would suffice.

Practice mutes. The Yamaga Silent Brass probably is one of the best out there. I personally don't use them that much so I just use the Denis Wick adjustable cup mute and put the cup all the way up to the bell. Works fine for me.
