It is connected to Sweden via the Öresund Bridge and its capital, Copenhagen, boasts royal palaces and the colorful port of Nyhavn, along with the Tivoli amusement park and the iconic "Little Mermaid" statue. The country of the writer Hans Christian Andersen, has 5,857,000 inhabitants.
Denmark is a flat, coastal country with an average elevation just above sea level. The highest point has an elevation of only 171 meters, and the coast is never more than 50 kilometers from any point in the country.
According to various studies, the Danes are the happiest population on the entire planet. The unemployment rate is minimal, the purchasing power of its citizens is high, and crime rates are quite low. In addition, Denmark is one of the countries in the world where the most help is provided to citizens.
In these first impressions we can say that all of the above tends to be verified. In the course of the next installments we will see many of its characteristics in more detail.
The Danes seem to have a good time. Hygge, the most common Danish word, refers to a feeling of togetherness and intimacy related to relaxing with family and friends. The best translation would be something like "cozy".
During the summer the sun is the one who prepares well-being. But in the long, dark winters, candlelight, cozy blankets and hot drinks help bring hygge to Danish homes, and help explain why they are such happy people.
This is not our first visit here, but it is the first since we have the channel. Let's get lost among the many passers-by to try to perceive the soul of these geographies.
The Tivoli Gardens amusement park in Copenhagen was the inspiration for Disneyland. It was founded in the 1840s to offer Danes a distraction from politics. In 1951, Walt Disney visited the park, the beauty, cleanliness, order and familiar flavor made such an impression on him that it served as a model for Disneyland, which opened in 1955.
Today the Tivoli is a must for everyone who comes to Copenhagen. Being located right in front of the central train station, it is not difficult to locate it.
Beyond the streets of the big city we will try to get closer to Danish life and its outstanding aspects. Denmark, among other things, is a world leader in wind technology.
Particularly in the coastal regions of Denmark storms and strong winds are observed. The northernmost part of the Jutland Peninsula has an average of 170 windy days per year. Denmark turned this wind into a natural resource and became a pioneer in wind power in the 1970s. In 1979, the first commercial turbine was installed. Currently, more than 40% of the energy in Denmark comes from wind power.
The force of nature drives the force of people. Denmark has twice as many bicycles as cars. Bicycle culture is important in Denmark, and is integrated into work and leisure activities.
9 out of 10 Danish citizens have a bicycle, while only 4 out of 10 have a car. In Copenhagen, 56% of residents commute from home to work by bicycle. The city has made bicycle travel safer by installing elevated routes for the exclusive use of bicyclists.
If there is a fairytale country to which we can refer, that is Denmark. Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805 into a humble family. He was the son of a shoemaker who told him many stories during his childhood, until he passed away when Andersen was 11 years old.
The family moved to Copenhagen in 1819 with the purpose of dedicating themselves to the theater when Hans was barely 14 years old, although without much success. But the already young began to write poems and travel chronicles, and stories for children. Among his most outstanding works are "The Ugly Duckling" or "The Little Mermaid".
Andersen passed away in 1875 after completing 156 stories. Today, to honor his worldwide influence on literature, International Children's Book Day is celebrated on April 2, Andersen's birthday.
The afternoon became deep in Copenhagen and we fell into a story. We will continue touring its streets to share them with you and we hope you will join us.
