"Heineken? Fuck that shit! PABST! BLUE! RIBBON!" 30 years later, "Blue Velvet" still sends chills down my spine, and Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth stands out as one of the most memorable and menacing villains to ever grace the silver screen.
I've often said, when an actor can make you hate or fear one of the character's that they are portraying, that is a great actor..Dennis was such an underrated, yet great actor, he could play a whacko/sicko about as well as most, if not all of the GREAT actors....simply an amazing talent !!!
I agree. There use to be actors that I hated because they would always play the bad guys. I came to realize that they are just really good actors to as you said, hate and fear them.
I love all Dennis Hoppers performances. and am so glad that Robert Logia did not get the roll of frank booth. the amyle nitrate he inhales in blue velvet and the way he acts it out is stunning even today.
Believe it or not even Bobby Vinson was considered for the part . He would have been better than Loggia but Hopper pitched himself to Lynch saying “ I am Frank Booth !” And the rest is the history cliche
Loggia was definitely good but can’t imagine anyone else playing Booth but Hopper. When Lynch offered him the role he said “I am Frank!”, and he was and the best choice.
When it came to playing wound up, on the edge of madness or on the edge of sanity, no one was better than Dennis Hopper. Fine actor and underrated director.
Dennis was a modern artist, through and through. The abuse was a project. Renown for his creative photography, he hung and collected with modern expressionists. He ventured and that's the coolness.
Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet, Frank, taught me to dive a bit, to go below the surface, in the attempt to figure out, to understand, why we humans, over and over, end up as these dysfunctional, violent idiots. So to this date, Dennis Hopper, is the most important actor in my life. Thank you Mr. Hopper. Your contribution will not be forgotten.
He really did drink that much ", cause a beer is like a loaf of bread...,' So glad he was sober to catch this moment. What a amazing actor & interview " that's good"
Just saw him in an episode of Bonanza. He was like 28 at the time but I knew he looked familiar and sure enough it was him. He worked great with Michael Landon.
River's Edge is a sadly underrated film. Its theme? APATHY. A troubled young man kills his girlfriend and leaves her nude body in the woods and no one seems to care. Wow! What's more chilling than that? IT WAS BASED ON A TRUE STORY!
River's Edge, Blue Velvet, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Dennis Hopper was just perfect for cult movies. There will never be another like him! (edit; wrote this comment drunk while drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon)
We miss you Dennis. You were too suave for this world. Frank Booth is like no other character whatsoever and Dennis is like no other actor. Not exactly anyways. I'm sure there are some similar ones out there but still. Mr. Hopper was the fucking man.
Should be noted David Letterman also had a drinking problem and he gave up alcohol in the early 80s where then his career really took off. I think that is why he was so interested in asking Dennis questions about his experience.
That's where drugs can be a good thing just as long as YA DONT ABUSE IT!!! know your limitations, know your body, know your intake......BUT!!!! I'm talking about doing this during the days of this interview, now, 2019, I would highly advise anyone to stay away from ALL DRUGS!!! these days, u dont know what's mixed in there with it, and if u do know for a fact it's not mixed with anything, theres still the highly addictive properties to whatever it is you're taking cause times have changed for the worse when it comes to the partying scene....its best to just be sober, that's what I do now.
Lots of comments and love on here for Blue Velvet, but Hopper was pushing River’s Edge in this interview. If you haven’t seen River’s Edge, do so immediately.
John Houston’s Noah Cross in Chinatown is the most frightening realistic villain in movie history . Dennis Hopper’s Frank Booth is definitely the sleaziest .
Wasn’t Sacramento it was Milpitas Ca, and the only truth to Rivers Edge was a girl was killed and kids came and looked at the corpse but told no authorities for a few days.
I miss interesting actors like Hopper. Not to bitch, but they are ALL becoming safe and boring good looking men. Damon, Clooney, Craig, etc. (sigh) Miss ya Dennis.
Letterman was often terrible back then. He grew into a great host. I wonder if he ever sees his old interview. It's fun to see him as a guest on other shows now.
this is why actors should never be directors. Especially drug addicts. The helium would have been great, the film is not as good as it could have been if it was included
Dark Melodrama... totally worthwhile. Hopper’s Great, but Crispin Glover’s wonderful performance will stay with you long after the credits have finished crawling up the screen.
Frank Boothe is a good quarter of my personality, more so when I was younger - I keep him away from the other parts of me, because if they met well let's say old frank ain't the worst of them.
True, but that’s kind of what storytelling has been doing for ages. You make an excellent and sensitive point, though... Weirdly, people love to decorate the dead.
