Dennis Hopper (1936 - 2010) was an American actor and filmmaker. He attended the Actors Studio, made his first television appearance in 1954, and soon after appeared in Giant (1956). In the next ten years he made a name in television, and by the end of the 1960s had appeared in several films, notably Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Hang 'Em High (1968). Hopper also began a prolific and acclaimed photography career in the 1960s.
Hopper made his directorial film debut with Easy Rider (1969), which he and co-star Peter Fonda wrote with Terry Southern. The film earned Hopper a Cannes Film Festival Award for "Best First Work" and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (shared with Fonda and Southern). Journalist Ann Hornaday wrote: "With its portrait of counterculture heroes raising their middle fingers to the uptight middle-class hypocrisies, Easy Rider became the cinematic symbol of the 1960s, a celluloid anthem to freedom, macho bravado and anti-establishment rebellion". Film critic Matthew Hays wrote "no other persona better signifies the lost idealism of the 1960s than that of Dennis Hopper". Following the critical and commercial failure of his second film as director, The Last Movie (1971), he worked on various independent and foreign projects - in which he was frequently typecast as mentally disturbed outsiders in such films as Mad Dog Morgan (1976) and The American Friend (1977) - until he found new fame for his role as an American photojournalist in Apocalypse Now (1979). He saw a career resurgence in 1986 when he was widely acclaimed for his performances in Blue Velvet and Hoosiers, the latter of which saw him nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His fourth directorial outing came about through Colors (1988), followed by an Emmy-nominated lead performance in Paris Trout (1991). In 1990, Dennis Hopper directed The Hot Spot, which was not a box-office hit. Hopper found greater fame for portraying the villains of the films Super Mario Bros. (1993), Speed (1994) and Waterworld (1995). (wikipedia)

I remember going to see Blue Velvet in around 1986 knowing nothing about the movie. I left confused, scared, repulsed and shocked. I went back to watch it 5 times and to this day, it's still one of the best films I've seen. Dennis lit up the screen in it.

One of the best actors of all time. And had the quality of the craft to boast how his legacy began and how it ended. RIP Dennis Hopper.

Back in the mid 80s, I saw him coming out of our apartment complex coming out early in the morning with a smile on his face. I knew he had a fun night in our building. I wasn’t a huge fan then but something about his energy started my day out with a smile and still brings a smile to my face when I remember it.

The town was MORGANZA where he put the local Sheriff, etc. in the movie. The diner is gone but there is a concrete marker on the grind in front of where the diner once stood. I’m from Louisiana but have yet to go find it though I did finally ride over the bridge (in the last ten years ) that they show in the movie. I’m 60 yrs old and didn’t see the movie till I was at least 25- 30 yrs. old. Wish I coulda been a teenager back then but was only 8 yrs old when movie came out,

A superior interview to (too) many other guests in the chair in later years. A great series overall though. What a pity so few remain here on RU-vid! Grateful for the decent ones that are though!

1994 around the time of this interview he was the bad guy villain in "Speed". Then next year again the baddie in Waterworld. His character of course dies at the end of both movies. Jump ahead to 2007 and he's playing himself in an episode of Entourage as an obviously wealthy and happy although eccentric retired movie star. And then a couple years later - just gone man outta here, off to some chopper in the sky now alongside Peter Fonda. VAAAAARRRRRROOOOOMMMM!!!

Newman , Redford are great actors but not on the level as Duvall or Hopper just because of the ferocity of there acting when they need to get to that level in a scene.
