In this episode of Actions Detrimental, Denny Hamlin and co-host Jared Allen discuss the recent Playoff cut-off race in which Denny secured his spot in the Round of 12. They talk about how the much-anticipated tire wear was not a factor, leaving the race solely dependent on speed and the ability (or lack thereof) to make passes. Denny shares his thoughts on the four drivers eliminated in Round One and discusses the drivers in a good position going into the next three races. They delve into Denny’s mindset when racing and how his 2010 season taught him to view the Playoffs in a different light. And don’t worry, everyone-Lulu is safe and sound in the Hamlin household.

Was at the race and cheered for Denny the whole time. Hearing him say "thank you" while getting a chorus of boos during the intros was great. Denny is the only driver having a serious conversation about problems facing this sport. Whether it be the charter, the tires, cars, or other issues, I always like his candid answers and honesty. Keep it up man.

The boos for him at driver intros are getting so old. There are definitely more drivers that deserve it far more than Denny. People just hate on certain drivers because it’s the fad and never give them a chance when someone like Denny, actually cares about the betterment of the sport and calls out whoever needs to be call out. Denny’s trying to make NASCAR great again

The high downforce and low horse power are the problems. If the straightaway speeds and corner speeds continue to stay so close, passing will be at a minimum. More horse power would increase the need to slow down more to make the corners. More horse power would burn up the rear tires more quickly.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Goodyear brought the same tire as last fall and somehow expected a different result. Goodyear is so far off its pitiful. They havent put together a good tire in the nextgen era
@the_keen_edge
@the_keen_edge 3 дня назад
True, but why is it Goodyears responsibility to fix NASCAR's problems. If the tires are the problem, then why doesn't NASCAR look at trying different tire manufacturer's to find one that works with this car. The only reason Goodyear is still the tire of NASCAR is because they pay NASCAR a shit ton of money to be there regardless of the results.

This new car is good at some tracks, ie: Kansas. But sucks at most the other tracks. If you can't pass due to aerodynamic advantages for the leaders, then it kind of takes the fun out of competitive racing. I think we need WAY more horsepower to separate the men from the boys. Maybe that will bring back the competitive edge for the better drivers, like back to 800-900 horsepower and let's see if that brings these cars to their potential. This 678 hp at short and intermediate and what, 450 hp at superspeedways is a joke. It's just way too underpowered.

Not resetting points is just the Chase Format again, only with the bottom 4 being eliminated every 3 races. The flaw in the playoff elimination format is that it's not organic. All formats have some sort of elimination element as the season advances because one can only gain or lose so many points per race. All the playoff format does is put all of that on the back end of the season, but in doing so puts the teams and drivers who have been the best all season up to that point at risk and puts the whole system into question as a legitimate way to crown a champion in racing. Forget what other sports do. Auto racing is not 1v1 like other sports and so the format for championships needs to be different than 1v1. Trying to be like other sports is the mistake being made here. Embrace what you actually are as a sport instead of trying to be something else.

Well said, pretty much my thoughts on the playoffs. I mean are we for real? Playoffs in motorsport? Playoffs work when it’s one team vs another team but not when it’s at least 36 teams all vs each other every week. Auto racing has far too many factors for playoffs to be taken seriously

The tire issue can be easily fixed by carving a few treads into them. The tire compound is not an exact science, and weather conditions play a huge role in how certain compound will react. Treads guarantee more tire wear, regardless of track conditions. As for the car, it's a huge waste of time trying to convince Nascar to dump it at this point. A ton of work and resources went into developing that car, but we've seen how good the racing is when tire wear is prominent. The Spring race proved tire wear is vital to a good short track race, so treaded tires will definitely be the best fix. Nascar is not going to add horsepower, so tire wear is the obvious solution.

This is being said knowing there are fundamental ideas that could be tested and tried but the almighty dollar is in the way. It's incredible how all the solutions fall on Goodyear but the reality is the platform design falls on NASCAR. The extra tire width, the underbody, and the horsepower are all glaring problems that continue to be ripped by drivers, crew chiefs and all major industry personalities with no solutions provided or even attempted. It's a car and tire problem, tires are too wide, car has no power, but even with 900hp with those wide tires they would still be gripped up

That's why the Xfinity series is better racing the cup has the wider tire and bigger tire so you won't get passing with it everyone has same horsepower same rear end gear so unless you get more horsepower where you can spin those bigger tires you won't have tire fall off unless you can spin them and use them up

since I have been watching this from when this podcast first started Travis has got more involved vocally and I wonder when we will get the face reveal and make it the big three of Denny Jared and Travis. It is very conspicuous hearing this travis person but never seeing him.

Goodyear makes roughly 100,000 race tires each year compared to nearly 170,000,000 passenger tires each year. It does not need to improve tech for .005% of its yearly product, it doesn't give the return. It doesn't make sense. But let's blame the unions.

Not sure what it would do, but on tracks a mile or under take the spoiler off the car completely. Just a smooth rear deck lid

Having watched NASCAR for years I understand why after a tire change pitstop the drivers say the car changed or the handling is now off. And it's not always tire pressure.

Why is no one talking about a potential new tire manufacturer? I get the history between NASCAR and Goodyear, but if Goodyear is having such an issue finding tires that work and manufacturing challenges, why not try something new?

Dude I’m tired of everyone giving these ridiculous solutions or saying the car is the way it is. Just REMOVE THE UNDERSIDE AERO AND ADD 100-150 HP. Also, what the hell is the point of creating this “all cars are equal” package, if you can’t even make the ONLY part of the car that touches the racing surface, even remotely equal? That can’t happen. Tires are too important to just be a toss up. They should be made the same way, with the same care and precision as street street tires, whether it’s less man power and more machine, or higher quality compound that is precisely made. If Goodyear can’t make it happen, kick rocks and find a new partnership. To hell with a relationship. If it’s nascar cutting costs, then they’re just plain idiots.

For Next Gen 2.0 why not import a V8 Supercar into the series and let SVG pilot it (as he understands the car). If it works then most of the design work is already done and there's a good path forward.

They should try testing different (smaller) sizes of the step-up splitter to decrease the air going under the car, but increase front downforce. So what you lose in overall DF, you gain in front grip allowing the cars to both turn better and potentially wear front tires more. Also, close off that opening behind the front tires that lets air out because it creates a larger wake than it would otherwise create. Start there. Those are two really simple changes that shouldn't really increase costs over the long-term because you're basically just adding a little bit of material. Personally, I'd like to see the smaller rear spoiler that they run at short tracks everywhere else too so that the cars need more off throttle time in the corners. Just test some shit out. It really shouldn't be that complicated or expensive to make a few small changes that could have a major effect on the performance of the cars in race conditions.
