@@IbrahimAbdu-pc4xx The term Habesha predates the arrival of the Ottomans by centuries. It refers to the Habashat, who were incense traders and collectors in the region, long before any Ottoman influence. Your claim that the name came from the Ottomans is historically inaccurate. The Ottoman Eyalet of Habesh took its name from the region, not the other way around. Moreover, people in northern Eritrea don't typically refer to themselves as Habesha-it's mainly used by Tigrinya speakers in southern Eritrea and northern Ethiopian groups. The identity and the term are rooted in our region’s ancient history, not colonial influence.
@Mark12434
@Mark12434 6 дней назад
@@IbrahimAbdu-pc4xx "1st Millennium BCE: Early Origins of Habashat The Habashat were an ancient group of people mentioned in both South Arabian inscriptions and Greek records. These early Habashat were likely involved in the trade of incense and other valuable goods between the Arabian Peninsula and the African coast, particularly around the Red Sea. This group was part of the early Axumite civilization, which had connections with both the Arabian Peninsula and the rest of Africa. The Axumite Kingdom is considered one of the precursors to the modern identities of Ethiopians and Eritreans. 1st Century BCE - 1st Century CE: The Rise of the Aksumite Empire The Aksumite Empire (around the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE) was a powerful ancient kingdom that spanned parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. During this period, the name Habesha started to be used more commonly to refer to the people of this region. Aksum was known for its trade connections across the Red Sea and with the Mediterranean world. The term "Habesha" was used by foreign powers, such as the Greeks and Romans, to refer to the people living in the Axumite territory, which included both Abyssinians (the forebears of Ethiopians and Eritreans) and other Afro-Asiatic peoples. 3rd - 7th Century CE: Consolidation of the Habesha Identity By the 3rd century CE, the Aksumite Kingdom had solidified its control over much of the Horn of Africa. The term "Habesha" was used both internally and externally to refer to the people of Aksum and its surrounding territories. This period also saw the Christianization of the Aksumite Empire (under King Ezana in the 4th century), which helped shape the cultural and religious identity of the Habesha people, distinguishing them from neighboring non-Christian populations. Greek and other ancient texts referred to the entire region as "Habash" or "Habesh" (meaning incense land), and this name gradually evolved to refer to the people living in the highlands of the Horn of Africa. 7th Century Onward: Arab and Islamic Influence In the 7th century, with the spread of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula, the name Habesha was also used by early Muslim traders and writers to describe the Christian populations of the Horn of Africa, particularly the Tigrinya-speaking people in what is today Eritrea and Ethiopia. The term Habesha became a generalized name used by the Arabs for people living in the highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia, reflecting a growing connection between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. 16th Century: Ottoman Influence By the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire extended its influence to parts of the Eritrean and Ethiopian coastlines, including Massawa. While the Ottomans referred to the region as "Habesh Eyalet", they did not invent the term "Habesha." Instead, they adopted the term, which was already in use, to describe the regions they governed. The Ottomans ruled parts of Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, but their use of the term Habesh Eyalet reflected the existing name of the region. The name "Habesha" was not created by the Ottomans, but they used it in reference to the highland populations. 19th - 20th Century: The Colonial Period During the 19th and 20th centuries, with European colonialism (Italian rule in Eritrea and Menelik II's expansion of Ethiopia), the name "Habesha" continued to be used to describe the Tigrinya-speaking and Amhara populations, who shared a similar cultural and historical identity. The term "Habesha" remained prominent, especially among Tigrinya speakers in Eritrea and Amhara and Tigrayans in Ethiopia, who shared common cultural and linguistic roots."
