Dentures at 28 Years Old

I've been on the fence on making a video on this subject just like my hearing aids but I wanted to talk about my experiences getting dentures and how it's affected my life and to have somewhat of an excuse for my lack of content.
But as I said in the video, I inherited bad teeth and have been on the fence about getting them removed and getting dentures for a while now. Over 4 years and I am so glad I finally took the plunge and I'm so glad that I have a partner like Rachael to not only pay for them but also to help care for me during my initial recovery.
It is a process on learning how to do things with dentures and recover from the trauma of the extractions. It takes time to eat normal food again and it will feel like it takes forever. But give it time and within weeks or a month or so it'll feel like second nature.
I want to tell you that it will get better eventually.
It gets easier every day. But you have to put up with them every day and that's the hard part.

I got my dentures a little less than a year ago, at age 35 but I needed dentures much sooner due to many years of bulimia and medications that caused tooth decay. My teeth looked terrible and made my self-esteem so much lower. I wouldn't smile and I was afraid to meet people. I wish I got dentures sooner. I just couldn't afford it. I live on disability and dentures weren't covered at all. I had to pay over $4100 for them. 100% out of pocket. They are beautiful though, works of art really. The teeth are from Germany and have beautiful, subtle texturing on them like real teeth. They are some of the finest prosthetic teeth available. I absolutely love them!! My extractions were terrible. I was awake for it and it was extremely painful and traumatic. I also had to wait 6 months after the extractions until everything was healed and settled so my dentures would fit the best and give me the least problems, but 6 months with NO teeth in my 30's was terribly hard to deal with. It was so embarrassing, and I couldn't eat very much. Which was the worst for me, I love food! I was sinking to levels of desperation such as powdering chips in the Vitamix blender then eating them with a spoon and eating cereal once it had become soggy enough to eat lol! Despite all that, I am so happy I went through with it. No one can tell that my teeth aren't real, and I have the best, whitest smile of anyone I know now. I have gotten my confidence back. I'm ALWAYS smiling now. I even recently went back to school to start working towards my high school diploma. I feel like the world is at my fingertips and having beautiful teeth has helped a lot! I was worried about having to use adhesive but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It doesn't have a taste really and it doesn't ooze and drip out everywhere. You really just need a pea sized amount on each side. It's actually far less off-putting than toothpaste to me lol. The lower denture was a lot harder to get used to but I'm really starting to be quite comfortable wearing my dentures all day from when I wake up until before bed. They only affected my speech for a few weeks afte getting them. Now I can talk and sing exactly like I used to. Anyone who has been putting it off like I was, go for it! It's one of the best decisions I have ever made as far as improving my quality of life. You deserve it, everyone deserves to smile with confidence and be able to eat properly. Also just think, no more abscesses, cavities, root canals, and chipping, painful, sensitive teeth. No more trips to the dentist for fillings or cleanings. I can bite into ice cream bars now without pain. There are so many up sides to having dentures and the downsides are so miniscule in comparison. Thanks for being so open about it and making this video. I wish dentures could be normalized. So many people go through so much pain with their teeth because of the stigma surrounding needing to wear dentures.

I got them also 20 years ago. Best decision of my life. I lived a very unhealthy lifestyle and ruined my teeth and had pain every day , now I'm good no more pain, I can eat what I want, that alone was a big win for me, not to worry if a teeth may break when I want to eat cereals 😁 Yay for dentures 👍

I've just now begun eating normal food more regularly. I can eat chips again without pain. It's one of the best decisions I made too. Pain free!

A dentist once told me being susceptible to tooth decay is hereditary as it depends on the number of enzymes you inherited from your parents. Some people produce three enzymes to fight tooth decay and those people rarely have a cavity throughout their lifetime, most people produce two enzymes to fight the decay and will probably die with their own teeth but have several cavities and a lot of dental work throughout their life and maybe even end up with dentures, and then some people only produce one enzyme to fight the decay and that is my case...I kinda knew by my early twenties I would need dentures eventually and hoped to at least reach age 40 which I did and sooner after I indeed did get them. I honestly believe that the dental industry knows that tooth decay is in fact determined by the number of enzymes one produces to fight it, that being 1, 2, or 3, and the number we produce is in fact inherited from the numbers our parents produced...for some people no amount of brushing, cleaning, or fluoride will make much difference in trying to prevent the decay.

I’m on the fence about getting my top teeth extracted and getting dentures. The dentist said my teeth are loose and need to be extracted although I haven’t noticed it.

It's usually best to take your dentist to their word where they're supposed to be experts in the field. But you can always get a second opinion from another dentist in your insurance's network if you're unsure.

this video was really helpful and insightful, thanks a lot! I have teeth issues and I've been weighing my options because I know I'll have to deal with it either way in the future no matter how scared I am about it now lol Please give an update in the future :)

So many issues how to manage.

Easiest way to manage is to take everything slow. It's going to be a learning process and it can be disheartening and frustrating at times. Especially at the beginning because if you just had your teeth extracted, your mouth needs to heal from the trauma. Stay on top of pain management and schedule your appointments with your dentist or denture maker. It's all about the growing pains of adapting to the dentures. One of the more annoying parts when I first got them was the constant drooling I had. My body had to experience having my dentures in for days before that stopped. So as difficult as it seems, wearing them every day that you can manage is key. Talking gets easier. Food gets easier. It's like learning a new skill.

I asked my dentist about getting all teeth out and denture replacement - but he told me that i had to stop being heterosexual and couldn't date women anymore. I suspect he was trying to take advantage of me and my mouth, though. 🤔
