Alan Wilder: “We weren’t able to be in the moment - enjoy the moment - because we were just worrying about it too much. So, really, nobody enjoyed the gig. We didn’t play particularly well that night. It’s only when you go back, and it’s been captured on the film, and the sound’s been tarted up a bit, that you realise what a big, special moment it was for us as a group, and that we should have actually taken time to enjoy it a bit more.”

I’ve listened to 101 so many times since ‘89 that, like you, I can recall and discern every distinct crowd cheer/scream, every Dave “yeah”, every press of every keyboard note, in time, by memory, instantly. Totally ingrained in my mind. “Good evening Pasadena!” None of their studio albums sound correct to me, and I think 101 and Violator were the absolute crowning pinnacle of DM’s career achievements. There’s a very special quick moment at the beginning of the concert if you look closely right when the first curtain sheets raise before the main curtain drops at the beginning of Behind the Wheel when they start singing where Martin and Dave share a smile and extended repeated glance at each other, and you can tell exactly what they were both thinking in that glorious moment “ Holy shit, this is it. We’ve made it. It doesn’t get any better than this. Are you ready?” I wonder if the 90000 lucky concert goers who attended that show realize what an important epic piece of music history that would become. The one and only thing missing from this concert that I wish Martin would have added is his melodic ”See the stars, they're shining bright Everything's alright tonight” at the end of Never Let Me Down Again - I suspect he was overcome by the magical moment of all the arm waving and forgot to sing these lines. You can clearly see the look on Martin’s, Alan’s, and Fletch’s faces at the end of this song as Dave’s leading the crowd waving that their mouths are gaping open in amazement and awe of what was happening. So glad they let that special moment ride out, just like they did at the end with the crowd singing Everything Counts. Perfection.

I recently checked out this channel because I wanted to learn keyboards to improve my guitar playing regarding reading music. I soon found out that there were interesting videos here to do with Depeche Mode, my favorite band! Everything's been very interesting so far! Looking forward to all the upcoming DM videos. I do want to add that after watching the videos and reading the commentaries from other subscribers that I too, as much as I love Depeche Mode, loved them more when Alan Wilder was part of the group. The musical layers were amazing! My intro to them was Black Celebration. Didn't even know what they looked like back then. Didn't care. That music transported me to another world. Anyway, let me get back to this current video before I end up writing a book! Keep up the great work Vaughn!

"Pimpf" is an old german word for little Boy. Used in the 3. Reich time. Maybe Martin watched a Documentary of that. "Pimpf" sounds like a soundtrack for the films made by Leni Riefenstahl. And i agree again. 101 is the best. I like the recording from Hammersmith back in 1982 as well. Greetings from Bulgaria. :)

Have to agree that 101 made it jarring to listen to the early studio albums. The 101 version of “Somebody” is vastly superior to the album version.

The horn sound on Question of Time on 101 is the best example of how they changed a sound for the better, as well as the timing of that sound. Vastly superior is right!

Great video! I've been a DM fan since I first heard "People are People." I too agree with you that that their "spark" has been lost since 1995 (Wilder's departure). I'm pleased to have come across your channel, as finally there is someone making content to discuss these topics. As I grew up in the Los Angeles area, this was an area where DM cultivated their U.S. following. With the help of KROQ and college alternative radio, this is what lead to mainstreaming DM. Richard Blade was the DJ who was broadcasting live from the Rose Bowl on the concert announcement day. He was instrumental in getting DM's music played on KROQ (106.7FM). IMO - 101 was important for several reasons, it was the first stadium sell out concert for DM and firmly cemented their arrival in the rock n roll world that they had finally achieved superstar status. Violator placed them over the top and SOFAD, and subsequent tour had an equal impact in the Los Angeles area. They were massive and I consider myself lucky to have been in high school and college during this period. I was too young to attend 101, however, I went to Dodger Stadium (World Violation tour) and attended three back-to-back nights at the Great Western Forum for the Devotional Tour in November 93'. Those were musical highlights for me! 101 was also important for what came to be known as "reality TV." "Those kids" as you refer to them, the mere fact they were filming those kids was really the beginning of reality TV. If you think about this, the idea of following around a pack of teenagers (following DM around the US), dealing with their drama etc, was a completely new concept back in the late 80s. Soon after, MTV's "The Real World" became the "first" reality TV show in the US. Anyway...good job, keep up the content! Also, I agree with your thoughts about Alan Wilder's departure and impact on the sound. He really is the orchestrator of the group. He was entirely responsible IMO for the formation of DM's sound and orchestrations. Daniel Miller helped, and so did Flood, however, it was Alan who came up with the tour arrangements. Keep up the great content...and I hope you can discuss the impact Los Angeles had on DM..and the fan base that is still strong!

I once met Alan Wilder at a meet and greet and asked him about the parts in Stripped(cause I've always been a freak on synths and especially Depeche Mode songs haha). Alan told me that they, indeed, both played that part. I believe he said that Martin played the same sample but they tweaked it a bit. I'm not sure though, but I believed he said something like this. Martin used to continue playing the part when Dave started singing so if it would be the same volume ect it wouldn't fit well with the singing.. it was a long time ago so I can't exactly remember what Alan said at the time.

I first saw 101 by accident on French TV as a 12 year old waiting for my school bus to arrive - I never heard of DM before, but I remember being hypnotized by the music and the band themselves and was so mad I had to go to school and couldn't watch the whole thing!! I then became obsessed - bought all the DM tapes (my first one was a bootleg 101 tape at a Polish bazar while visiting family during the cold war - it was hard to get originals back then - mostly copies were sold at markets), watched the film over and over, spent half the night listening to them on my walkman, saw them in concert anytime they toured in Canada (sometimes traveling to multiple cities)...and I still can't get enough!! I just recently discovered your channel, Vaughan, and have been watching your videos daily! Thank you for all the hard work you put into them!!! Keep up the fantastic work!!!

What we heard at the beginning from the mouth of D.A. Pennebaker in some way explains in my opinion why the story about the band turned unexpectedly into a story about accidental teenage fans ... Depeche Mode are not musicians (except Alan Wilder) so what can you show in the document? Tapes? Changing rooms? :) Although my adventure began in fact from 101, but after a short fascination this album landed forever in a drawer. For me, Depeche Mode has never really been a live band. And their musical potential more suits me to the studio where with the participation of a good producer they can record another good album. I can't find a single number from their career that would sound better than on the album, which confirms what I wrote. There are exceptions like "If you want" from Live in Hamburg (1984) - thanks to Alan of course.

Another great video! Well done. I came to 101 after falling in love with Depeche when a housemate bought 'Songs of Faith And Devotion' and I had to go back and discover the rest of the back catalogue. Being in Australia, DM is not exactly regular visitors to our shores. Last time here was 1994. Since then, I've travelled to London, Paris, Manchester and Barcelona over the years to continue seeing them live. Backstage at Paris (I used to work in the music industry and was given passes on the Exciter tour), I asked Martin if he would ever come to Australia again. His response was 'I don't even like the three-hour travel to get from London to Manchester...' I said, 'I'll take that as a no then.'

I still have my first copy of 101 in tape. I made at least 3 copies in one of those old double deck tape recorders, SONY 90 minutes tape. Everyone of those 3 copies went down until they broke. I used to listen my SONY Walkman (the yellow one, Mega Bass ON) in the darkness of my teenage room and dream about being there, first row, hands side by side while Dave was yelling at the crowd pulling his shirt down. 101 (the tape and the VHS video) established for me the standards of what a concert should be (I never was in a real concert ever, I was 15). Thanks for the good memories.

Love your channel! I have been a Depeche Mode fan since the mid 80’s thanks to my older brother influencing me in my elementary, middle and high school years. Growing up in Los Angeles as a kid in the 80’s was a truly exciting time with pop culture and especially New Wave & 80’s pop in the radio and MTV. My older brother and his friends actually went to the Depeche Mode 101 concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl as a High School student! They always had the most modern fashion at the time, Black Ray Ban Sunglasses, Fresh cars, and a Tape deck player with Depeche Mode blasting while cruising the Los Angeles streets and Pacific Coast Highway! A truly memorial moment in my childhood partly shaped by Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, The Smiths / Morrissey etc!

I didn't know what to expect when I first played my brand new VHS tape of 101. Coincidentally I shared the same views that you did: More band, less fans. As I continued to repeatedly play the tape I grew to love it all. I STILL have that VHS tape today! I grew up in a rural area where rock, country and soft pop were the mainstream music. One of the college stations would play some fantastic industrial music in it's early form and I loved it! One day my cousin and I traded cassette tapes. That was the first time I heard DM and I was hooked. She gave me Some Great Reward. I treated that like the Holy Grail. When I was finally able to get the 101 cassette tape my mind was blown to bits! I remember jamming out to that over and over and over while just staring at the b&w cover pictures, wondering what it was like to be there. This was before the internet. Now everything is just a click or few taps away. A couple laptop's ago I had downloaded the 101 movie and the bonus was the few select songs from the 101 concert that was at the end that played without the interruption from the accountants trailer, "... we're gonna get a load of money, TONS of money!" (Cue Everything Counts).

I completely understand your love of listening to vinyl. I was born in the early 2000s, so I have a similar nostalgic attachment to CDs (they had all the lyrics written right there for you, which was useful as a younger non-native speaker). I think "Pimpf" is a reference to a youth Nazi magazine Der Pimpf, and Pimpfe, the name for the youngest members of the Hitler Youth. The album title 'Music for the Masses' is "quite tongue-in-cheek", to quote AW, so I guess they are drawing a sarcastic parallel to the fact that they are young, naïve participants in a fiercely competitive pop industry which typically restricts artists from expressing ideas which deviate from a winning formula. I have read that the vocals of that song "Ho...Heave" effectively refer to Communist Russia as it is a labourers' chant to keep in time and keep up spirits. So...is there a message? Perhaps that all extremes are unwise, since people's judgement is imperfect and life is an upward battle to not resort to those extremes. That is the wonderful depth of even the most simplest of Martin's lyrics. Anyway, I loved this video, looking forward to part 2!

I do not know the correct explanation - after all, the lyrics are left to be interpreted by the listener, so are left purposely ambiguous. But I think mocking the music industry in some way is the most likely message.

The first time I heard of Depeche Mode 101 was when my older brother Oskar and his group of Alpha Male High School friends got together at my parents house planning out this “ditch day” to attend the 101 concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. The next day, he couldn’t stop talking about it. The hot girls, the excitement, the music, the atmosphere, the hot girls, etc. The following year in 1989, my brother brought home Depeche Mode 101 on vinyl and Cassette. That was the first time I have experienced the 101 live versions just like he did a year after. The record got really worn out by getting replayed multiple times over. The cassette tape was always in his car and would go everywhere he went. I borrowed it and made a copy for myself using a high quality Maxell Metal Tape so I can listen to it in my Sony Walkman on the way to and from school, until my younger brother Alex took it from me then I had to make another copy. Thank you for your wonderful videos! It has brought back so many great memories.

DA Pennebaker didn't record the whole concert. They used the concert as transitions between teenage story and documentary parts of the band. Mostly parts with the band weren't even recorded at Rosebowl. Same plenty of concert shots were from random cities. When you see concert shots with washed out colors these are from Pasadena. When you see juicy colors, these shots are a form roofed venues where you can better control the lights. Of course, there is full footage from Pasadena but weren't recorded by DA Pennebaker. These clips you can find an official site. Basically only audio is from Pasadena... heavily reworked at the studio.

@@VaughnGeorge Film 101 is not a concert, it is a documentary. D. A. Pennebaker is a documentalist, not a concert director. This film has never been shot as a full-size concert. Hence the later story that 101 was the progenitor of the para documental series in MTV - The Real World. Here you can read the statement on this subject from the archives of the official website: archives.depechemode.com/video/archives_concert_series/880618_pasadena.html Why, then, the documentalists did not make the whole concert? Simple because they did not need it. They recorded enough to fill the bus-road of kids and the band. Treat this document as a road-to-movie, not a document of Pasadena concert. I have previously written to you that not all of the recording is from a concert in Pasadena. First example: The Things You Said - the rehearsal and concert come from Pittsburgh 1988.06.11, only the close-ups of the people leaning on the railing most likely come from Pasadena. The first row from a concert in Pittsburgh looks different, which is clearly seen in the film. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pl3FsbyzUYE.html Just Can not Get Enough - you know this shot perfectly when Dave turns to the camera and leads the cameraman to the stage. Well, unfortunately, it is also not from Pasadena. Fans have found that the object visible in the background is Boston - Great Woods Amphitheater 1988.06.07. Shots from this song are a mix of Pasadena - the audience (where the fence is for example), and the shots of the playing band are Boston. Differences in the locations of Pasadena vs. the rest of the world are visible in the color saturation. The lighting used in the stadium and the distance to the audience makes the colors more washed out. Higher light concentration and color saturation could indicate closed objects. Fans additionally determined that some shots come from such objects as Dallas (Arlington) 1988.05.13, Houston 1988.05.14. Interestingly, Six Flags in Arlington is an entertainment park. Dave's hairdo is also a significant characteristic. Dave had terrible problems with his hair. Where the frieze falls, it's Pasadena. Regular flat-top hairstyle - other concerts.

I also was introduced to their 1st compilation, Singles 81-85 before starting with their albums. Also, I enjoyed Dave singing some Roxy Music classics backstage and also his Elvis vocals on tracks like Stripped, where he adds and stretches his vocals after the 'let me hear you speak it just for me....yeah ah yeah ah yeah ah'.

After seeing your video, I got into some thoughts: When I watched the dvd, several years ago, I remember that they had electricity problems in a concert (before Pasadena). So maybe ,back in 1988, with all these power and electricity and monitoring problems etc., they used the safety of having everything on tape, and as Gore told you, overdubbing some sounds on stage, whatever they could. Meaning, playing the same sound over the tape in a much lower volume. You already know, that if a sampler loses power , it takes a hell of lot of time to reload the sound banks, and definitely it is something that they couldn't afford on stage So maybe it went like this: "Hey guys, the tape will play and you have your Emus ready as well. If we lose the tape , you play everything, if we lose the Emus , no problem, it's on tape anyway.. Anyway I absolutely love your videos mate, you should make more than 2 in a week. Cheers!

I finally got the time to watch all the way through. I felt the same about the teenage segment of 101. I just wanted the band! Lol. Let me tell you. I first heard DM because of People are People. I think their first U.S. hit. Then, I had to get the cassette. So, I have a soft spot for SGR. Even though not as sophisticated as their later albums, still has a charm. Some unique and creative synth sounds on that one. O.k., I always thought the beginning of Stripped was a train track. I thought I read somewhere that they went out and sampled a train sound. Not positive. So, I always hear that as a train sound. I absolutely love it! There's a similar but faster effect on The Cure's "Jumping someone else's train" at the end. Anyway, you've got the coolest keyboard ever! I wish DM would bring back those recorded sound samples. That for me was what made them stand out from the rest. That combined with their haunting melodies. You played Somebody very well. Yes, they were on top with 101 (number of their shows during that tour). It was surely fun to be a teenager then. ~debbie

101 is really phenomenal - album, movie sucked hard, those annoying teens, no one cares about them - all I want is Depeche :-) As you said, lots of the live versions are the ultimate live versions - I love Blasphemour Rumours (summer´s day ... part most) and Stripped. Black Celebration, Something To Do, Somebody and Shake The Disease are great too. The best is the fact, that both Martin and Dave were in top form vocally. 101 is the best and irresistible intro to DM. I remember on the old estate in Budapest in the summer of 89 I stood around under a window in one of the blocks and "listen" to 101 as sounds filtered out. Previously, about a year earlier, first ever DM songs I caught were new life, dreaming...and Strangelove. The two from 81 are nice enough but Strangelove was magical no less.
