I like Alan's reaction at 9:50 when Paul Gambaccini asks him if he's ever watched Dave on stage. His voice takes a different, more upbeat tone and he raises his left eyebrow which he often does to emphasise a point and/or when he engages in a conversation. I have never really heard Martin or Andy talk so fondly about Dave's stage performance and his qualities as a frontman.
Martin isn’t the person who is full of compliments to give. Dave has said that the best compliment he was recieved from Martin was something like “I write the songs which I recieve from above and I need your voice to sing them”.
I can’t get over how diplomatic they all were in downplaying the horrific experience they had recording SOFAD. We can read between the lines. The tantrums, moodiness & chaos. They birthed an incredible record but so devastated to this day they lost Alan.
It's weird.....you can FEEL tension in the air. And they aren't even in the same room at any point. So glad they got past all the crap and are still making music. Love DM forever!!
You can read in Alan’s eyes and trough his body language that he was fed up in the period this interview was made. He actually insinuates that shit is already happening. What a sad story..
He seems like the only one not totally falling apart. But they brought themselves back together and they're still performing beautifully till this day, if Allen could have ridden it out a bit he might have been happier who knows
@pepper1188 Who knows But I am pretty sure that we still don’t know a lot of crucial facts and details and that’s why we don’t know who of them was or was not able to do certain things. Above all it was a very sad story and still is.
Very telling interview. No longer was the mood light and happy. You could sense the impending implosion that was to come...so sad. Growing up/older sucks.
It's so sad to watch Dave when Gambaccini asks him how close they all are. He isn't diplomatic about it--he's honest. If you didn't know there was tension and regret before, you certainly do after his answer
He's always been honest to a fault remember when he came out of jail and insisted on saying he was a heroin addict and he didn't want to die....sorry to his mum and fans.... Heartbreaking
I can only feel so much gratitude that Depeche survived this dark time, especially Dave, and that they got better and better, including Dave! Depeche mode is my life! Dave is my love! best band ever, and it will be like this forever!
@@ca77721 essence died too. too mechanical too electronic it lost Alans warmth and classically trained touch. Lost its production quality. Feels like a demo still.
@DModelX Too electronic?LOL.Martin and Dave are the essence of DM.Without Martin's songwriting and Dave's singing there is no more Depeche Mode.Alan was great and very talented but they have successfully gone on without him.Yes their sound has changed but its still Depeche Mode.If Dave or Martin leave DM THEN they are done.
@@ca77721 Ever heard Martin solo albums? below mediocre. How about Dave’s solos maybe 1 good song the rest below mediocre. Alan’s recoil was also below mediocre. All 3 mediocre because alone they are not good. Dave and Martin is a little better but production is lazy and their hits are too basic. Not enough layers, weak progressions, and zero or lazy climax. People can say Martin writes songs but it takes alot of work to put out legendary albums of BC, MFTM, Violator and SOFAD. You can’t just stroll into the studio drunk at 5 and leave at 10. You need a talented control freak and workaholic like Alan.
"Time is money." Smile, wink wink. They are the genuine article. Their brave sincerity and compassion for another and to their ART is FORTITUDE and worthy of renown respect! It's evident at this time they were all going through a tribulation in some form or another. Mercy, Faith, Condemnation, Truth, Lies, High, Walking in My Shoes, were embedded throughout the album. Need I say more? I've been a fan since MV3! and stopped going to see them live in reverence to Alan Wilder after the Devotional Tour. Either you're too stupid to notice,Zs,Ys, Theybies, whatever, should be jealous of Generation X! Today's music is puke. We got to experience an ECLECTIC array of music, unparalleled since the invention of rock 'n' roll! e.g. New Wave, Punk, Raves and Hip Hop! I know I must of missed something! Yeah!
Ironically, within all the problems they were going through, they had created such a good album, perhaps the pinnacle of their career. Things are like this, and it is in vain to think assumptions. In the end, personally I appreciate all that stormy stage of the band, they created that excellent album. Later, it is known that Alan decided to leave the band pitifully; But I repeat it again, things are like that and maybe, (the facts show it) his departure helped the band to continue, maybe otherwise it would have been impossible. Then Depeche mode continued to exist because (I agree with who says it) the driving force of the band was always the compositional capacity of Martin Gore. Along with Gahan's voice, always a voice and a character as personal as Dave's are irreplaceable. Martin's songs, David's voice and personality, and Andy's desire to keep the ship sailing made it possible for the band to continue with dignity despite all the drawbacks, because they were the fundamental and irreplaceable part of Depeche mode.
emersiveav On the contrary, Alan was really willing to help them make music. But you have to understand that specifically on _Songs of Faith & Devotion_, he did 90% of the work. Making the music, mixing it, editing it... he was there 10 hours longer than any of the remaining members, and he hardly got any recognition for it. Andy was particularly harsh on him sometimes. Can't really blame him if he was partially fed up with the whole situation. Plus, those were some really troubling times for all the members.
+Stephanie Louise I subscribe to what you said. There were a lot of arguments between Alan and Martin too in the recording process. Probably I would've left too if I were in his place.
VideosDepeche You have to understand that these are Martin’s songs. They’re his melodies, his compositions. I appreciate Alan, but truthfully none of them would be anywhere if they didn’t have Martin’s songs. Can’t blame him.
SportsFan_9630 They may well have been Martins melodies and lyrics but without a musician such as Alan, Depeche Mode would not have produced those songs...: Martins ego meant he could not give Alan any credit for creating those songs ! Fletch was counting the money, Dave sings what he is given, Martin and Alan deliver the music..... but Martin would only have the credits associated with him!
Why are you blaming Martin? He's always spoken highly and fairly about Alan's role and contribution. And DM has always worked with a variety of music producers. Alan was the one with the ego. He was admittedly a control freak. And again, no matter what you or anyone says, Depeche Mode would not exist without Martin. His songs. His compositions. His music. he is the driving force behind DM's success. Period!!!
BULLSHIT!! Martin didn't take all the credit! Thats a flat-out lie! Read all the liner notes. It The notes ALWAYS says PRODUCED BY Depeche Mode (and Flood or any other producer they were working with at the time). Im not just going to blame Martin. What about Dave and Fletch? Why don't people blame them as much as they unfairly attack Martin? What you've written here is complete and utter bullshit!
That look on Alans face as this guy asks him yhe question about no one has yet left the band...how prothetic that weeks later he would throw in the towel. Dave was so strung out on H. Martins denial of entry of whoever that was was hillariously uncomfortable..Hooker..Sex therapist..nail painter.. Fletch thinking his voice is underrated..lol more clap, less yap fletch
It's funny but with songs of faith and devotion I felt an emotion that I've never felt with any other Depeche mode album ....Martin looks well on his way to a divorce and alcoholism.....Alan protects the fact he is already bleeding by the hands with responsibility....Dave screams suicide when he touches on the sadness of emptiness of how far apart the four band members are.....and Andy.....I will never understand what he ever does .... His hatred towards Alan such simple putrid and hate will see to it the four will never record together ever again.......as Dave has always said.....Martin and Andy always seemed jealous of just how good musically Alan was. I personally miss Alan terribly.
Ironic, from their lowest point personally came their finest work creatively. After SOFAD and Alan's departure the only 2 albums that have stood the test of time are Ultra and Playing The Angel. Everything else has been hit or miss. Either way I think that even had Alan remained, their albums would have been superior, but they would still be past their prime. All bands have a pinnacle and then roll down hill, with the occasional late career creative renaissance, in DM's case Playing The Angel. Even so, I'm still glad they continue to record decent songs, continue touring and haven't become a tribute band of themselves.
What a marvelous record was SOFAD. but what a full of problems was involve with it. Alan was the price they have to pay to make such a masterpiece. Sad
Not only Alan leaving but Floof left too. A terrible loss. Although Tim simeon was perfect for Ultra and helped make that an extra album that gets better with time. However after that I have only like less than half of the songs on each album. Poor choices of producers and too much Dave on each album.
@@jeshkam Flood is more valuable as a producer. No one can put their finger on what Alan did but he really lead the production. Even Dave says that he missed that one person who would lead their music production who was Alan. Anyways i am looking forward to their new album and this will be my first DM concert.
Not the best period in DM's history and it shows. Totally matches the situation that would later be described by all the guys in the documentary. Andy is the only one who appears sound, he was struggling to keep communication between his band mates
What was the deal with woman coming in when Martin is doing a interview? Always wonder if that was real or not? Kind of bizarre to have something like that, if it was staged. Why did they leave that in if it wasn't?
I say Dave was the problem Alan is and was the man that made me and the DM fans love their music Alan deserved much more and rightly so Alan made DM sound like DM that's why the band since has never made new ground or new hits DM must have Alan in production period
I always felt the same tbh. I mean that he was a bit pricky. I know he is a great musicians but I also felt he was always looking down on Martin, Dave and Andy because they weren't trained.
