My ranking: 14. Speak & Spell - Their debut. I still like it, especially for the different sound it has when compared with the others, but I like the others more. Favourite songs are New Life, Photographic and Just Can't Get Enough. 13. A Broken Frame - This one is also pretty good, there's progression from Speak & Spell, but they still had to refine their sound. You can trace the roots of their sound here. Favourite songs are Leave In Silence, My Secret Garden, See You and The Sun & The Rainfall. 12. Construction Time Again - A more mechanical sound, it represents a big step up from their first two, having awesome songs such as Love, In Itself, Everything Counts, And Then..., but it's inconsistent, in my opinion. 11. Delta Machine - This one is very good and proof that Depeche Mode are a band that can still provide quality music even decades after they started. I really like Broken, Heaven, Should Be Higher and Soothe My Soul. 10. Sounds of the Universe - A more analogue-sounding album after Playing the Angel. This one is enjoyable, but I just enjoy the others more. Favourites on here are Hole to Feed, Wrong and Peace. 9. Exciter - Although a lot of people don't like this album as much due to its mellow sound, Exciter has always been great for me because of that. I like their attempt at a more diverse and mellow sound and I play this album a lot. Favourites are Dream On, Shine, The Sweetest Condition and I Feel Loved. 8. Spirit - Their most political album in a while. This one took several listens for me to really get into, but there are some great songs on here and I like the theme of the album. Favourites are Going Backwards, Cover Me, Eternal and Scum. 7. Some Great Reward - Another major step up from CTA. I consider this the beginning of their Imperial Phase, the quality of the songs is that good. Definitely a classic. Favourites are Something to Do, Lie to Me, Somebody and Blasphemous Rumours. 6. Black Celebration - Another hugely enjoyable album and a clear progression for them. This is the first one where I can feel a coherent theme running throughout the album, both musically and lyrically. I listen to this one a lot. Favourites are Fly On the Windscreen, A Question of Lust and Stripped. 5. Ultra - From here on out, each of these albums hasn't got a single bad track on it, in my opinion. Ultra has a great, foreboding and dark sound throughout it, which is telling of the state of the band at the time. The fact that they made such a quality album after what they had gone through just shows what a great band they are. Favourites are Barrel of a Gun, Home (in my top 5), It's No Good, Useless, The Love Thieves and Insight. 4. Playing the Angel - An awesome album, a return to their roots of sorts following Exciter, this one is classic Depeche Mode updated and I have loved it since first listen. Favourites are John the Revelator, Suffer Well, Precious (the track that got me into Depeche Mode and probably in my Top 5) and Lilian. 3. Music for the Masses - This one continues builiding on what they did on Black Celebration with even better results. Music for the Masses contains a lot of my favourite tracks from them, including Never Let Me Down Again (second or third favourite), The Things You Said, Strangelove, Sacred and Nothing. Altogether a fantastic album and it's interchangeable with my other two. 2. Violator - The classic one. This is pretty much the perfect Depeche Mode album, sounding like the bridge between the 80s and 90s. All of the songs on here are classics and I couldn't pick a favourite, they're just that good. This one I can listen to all the time and it wouldn't get tiring. It is second, however, because there is one more that just speaks to me more on a personal level.... 1. Songs of Faith and Devotion - One of my favourite albums of all-time, this one is POWERFUL. It is so spiritual and it takes you on a journey. All of the songs here are EPIC for me, even Get Right With Me, which many people don't like that much. It contains In Your Room, my favourite Depeche Mode track ever, I Feel You, such a rocking track to start out, Walking In My Shoes, such a moving song, Higher Love, also really moving, I could go on and on about this album, it's just so amazing. P.S. Your list is excellent!
Wow, thank you for watching my DM video! I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this comment and providing your opinion and favorite tunes from each album! I find "Going Backwards" playing a lot in my head lately due to these chaotic and troubling times. Your top 5 is truly wonderful! Can't go wrong with any DM really. Cheers and be well!
As a child, I'd heard much about Depeche Mode from my brother, who'd been into them since MFTM, but I'd never been able to get into them. That all changed around Christmastime at the turn of the millennium. I had taken up a room in Gaylord Opryland, an enormous vacation resort that's all under multiple roofs, and my brother had let me take one of his suitcases, as I didn't have my own. I'd brought a CD player, and some albums I liked, but in one of the pockets of that suitcase was his copy of 'Ultra.' He'd been making quite a noise about it leading up to the release, but didn't speak about much afterwards. Curious, I popped it in while sitting on one of the inside balconies, and listened to it beginning to end near midnight. A RU-vid comment alone can't explain what the experience was like, but hearing Martin sing the chorus of 'Home' while looking out at all their light displays was life-changing. From then on, I've been DM faithful.
Hi Randall. Thanks for stumbling upon my Depeche Mode fangirl video! Wow, your experience of hearing Ultra in that setting sounds just unbelievable. "Home" really takes me to an emotional place. It's where my love for them really started. DM fans for life! Peace.
Home was the first DM song I heard and they've been one of my favourite bands ever since. I've always preferred Martin's vocals to Dave's, though they do complement each other really well.
Hi Hanna .... I love this video !!! You know I am a Depeche Mode fan and your video is outstanding!!! I have half their albums and now I am going to use your recommendations for which ones to get next ! I can see myself picking up more of their albums as the winter months roll in. My top 3 are Songs Of Faith and Devotion, Violater and Music for The Masses. I love Spirit, Black Celebration and Playing The Angel !! Based on your video I am going to seek out A Different Frame next . I also have that Singles cd you showed plus the other one that goes from 81-85. Fantastic job Hanna !! I can’t wait to get more of their catalogue. Thank you .Chez
Thanks so much, Chez! Thought you might like this video! Oh yeah, winter would be the perfect time to scoop up some more DM. Looks like we have the same top 3 with slightly different order! Awesome! A Broken Frame is worth checking out..one of their better earlier releases. It did grow on me though. I don't think I was into it much at first. Oooo, you must get Ultra too if you don't have that yet! :-) Happy shopping and thank you for watching, as always! Peace. ~Hanna
Exciter itself is not a favorite of mine too. But strangely two songs, shine was my absolute moody sundowner back than in a really wet hot summer in wich i lost my love. And dream on was experimental but awesome too, still wonder why it charted. Strange sometimes you learn and appreciate good things from a bad time in life.
Wow, really, Mark?! I'm sure you'll probably at least recognize "Just Can't Get Enough," "People Are People," "Policy of Truth," "Personal Jesus," or "Enjoy the Silence." Hope you like Depeche Mode! I appreciate you watching! Peace. ~Hanna
Hi Hanna, good stuff in what must be a very tough undertaking! Very educational. Really don't have a lot of DM, but have to concur with your #1 album choice. It's mine as well, they really went somewhere deeper with that. And for your #1 song, what do you think of the Pumpkins cover of it? Adore owes more than a passing nod to songs of faith, i think. .. Oh yeah, also love your video start and finish sequences :) thanks for this video, cheers- Dean :)
Thanks for watching, Dean. I know not all my viewers are DM fans! OMG, I love Smashing Pumpkins' cover of Never Let Me Down Again. It's so dreamy! I'd love to have that on vinyl. I think it might be on the Rocket 7"? Glad you agreed with my #1 album choice and liked my intro/outro. I had fun with it! Peace. ~Hanna
I'm trying to remember where I got my Devotional DVD now...I think I got it in the mid-2000s when I lived in California. It is definitely one to own! So good!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert You can get it on eBay for maybe $25 now, or $40 in some cases, there's nowhere for me to find stuff like that near home any longer, in person.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Some of the library systems here on LI have stuff like that in the collection, but my local library is lacking a lot of music films, sadly, their collection isn't vast. I'll probably just order it up on eBay when I can. I don't love downloading, I like owning the actual genuine item!
Interesting how the majority of what is considered to be the best albums and singles are when Alan Wilder was a band member (or as in the case of Barrel of a Gun, heavily influenced by his style).
Well Anna its very hard for me to do a DM ranking cause from Some Great Reward to Music for the Mases they simply made the best 80's albums on vinyl of any band, so those are equal for me. From the 90's, from Violator to Ultra they made the best 90's CD's of any band also and I like those 3 the same. So its so hard to choose. I dont own Exiter, maybe some day and I also have Playing the Angel and I love that one too. Their first album I like it but its more like an Erasure album and on their next 2 albums Construction and A Broken Frame they are developing their sound still but those have an industrial vibe and I love that "amaturish" sound and those 2 albums are so good also. So my ranking will be #2 Speak and Spell and #1 All the others lol. Havent heard anything past Playing the Angel and haven't heard much of Exiter so I can't give an opinion on those.
Agree with so much of what you said, Alejandro! So, you can see making a list like this was difficult! You had a hard time with it as well! Give Sounds of the Universe a try since you haven’t heard anything past Playing the Angel. I like the industrial elements thrown in on some of the early albums as well! Thanks so much! Peace. Hanna
Ok Hanna, as a DM fan for almost 30 years, i just want to say something: "BUT NOT TONIGHT" ...!!!! how could you miss it from your top 20 songs??? I know it is your personal list and also this is not part of the Black celebration Album (more like a B-side), but that song should be in a top-20 song ranking of any fan :-). I'm going to comment later about your Album ranking, but I agree with you, Exciter is their worst by far, and the best (debatable) Violator before SOFAD (2nd). Cheers from Toronto.
Hey there! Hope you are trying to stay warm in Toronto! It's so cold here lately. I enjoy "But Not Tonight," but it still wouldn't make my personal top 20 list. :-) Awesome that it makes your list, though. DM are so brilliant that I enjoy almost every song they've put out! I look forward to your further comments! Peace.
For me its #1 Violator, #2 Music for the Masses, and #3 Songs of Faith and Devotion. 101 is one of the best live concerts recorded and I am also a big fan of Dave's solo album Paper Monsters. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much for watching! You have a wonderful top 3...same as mine, just different order! Yes, 101 is fantastic! I'm due to watch it again! Paper Monsters is indeed a fine solo album from Dave. I have the "Dirty Sticky Floors" 12", but I've never seen his solo albums on vinyl. Peace. ~Hanna
Exciter and PTA were already small desasters, the latter one especially for the bad production (even distortion in high end frequency wtf?)...SOFAD imho was only soso but better production....everything before was very good or at least in the upper 3rd of electronic music. ultra was the last enjoyable one. Plus some single songs from later albums...but not complete albums anymore. An (ex-DeMo), Synth and EBM Fan (242, FLA etc.) - but still electronic music fan (but more Metal tbh forever) But hey do not despair the latest FLA album is a VERY decent effort, compared to other electr.bands incl. DeMo. Apop make now 80ties synthpop so should perhaps liked by you, too?
Btw. check my oldschool stuff here: soundcloud.com/alphaquadrant Some are like instrumental DeMo :) The first 2 are only mixes . own stuff start at 3. track
I think PTA is special to me because I saw them on that tour and it made an impact. It's what turned me into a super fan of them. SOFAD is still a masterpiece to me. Thanks so much for watching. DM forever!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I was just getting to listen "PTA" again... I remember there was some production(sound) problem with. Btw. just uploaed 4 DeMo covers to youtube, would like your opinion (but 100% electronic versions)
14: sounds of the universe 13: speak & spell 12: spirit 11 : delta machine 10: a broken frame 9: playing the angel 8: ultra 7: exciter 6: music for the masses 5: construction time again 4: black celebration 3: songs of faith & devotion 2: some great reward 1: violator. Have to say there is not one album i dislike & the list is not easy to put together
Hi Craig! I'm thrilled you checked out my Depeche Mode ranking video! Oh man, I can't believe you put Sounds of the Universe dead last. Hehe, it's all good. Interesting to see how others rank their albums. Saw them on the Playing the Angel tour and they blew me away. DM fans unite! Peace.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I thought you might pick up on the fact that I placed sotu at 14 but the only two tracks I really like on it are 'fragile tension' & 'in sympathy'...maybe 'peace' as well,...noticed you have 'exciter' at the bottom of the pile 🙉...I think it's their best record post millennium,..but as you mentioned we all hear and feel music differently which is a good thing.
Music For The Masses 4ever. Their first album my mom bought me when I was maybe 11 or 12 on cassette and it's still my favorite. Massive drums, epic sounds, reverbs, fantastic guitars and Dave sounds like a greek God, Apollo maybe lol? So powerful, his vocal peek imo. Plus Anton's B/W videos and the late D.A. Pennebaker's wonderful and hilarious "101" (my favorite quote: "guns 'n' posers" 🤣). Thank you and best wishes from Poland! 😎🇵🇱🇺🇸
RU-vid recommended your video since I am a Devotee. I agree with most of your opinions, especially regarding Sounds of the Universe which I think is a fantastic album and I can’t understand all the negativity regarding it. I must say we disagree on the song “Wrong,” which I love. The word “Wrong” is repetitive throughout the song but the lyrics are pretty much fresh each verse. I’ll include my list including their latest album, Memento Mori. Aside from the great single, “Ghosts Again,” unfortunately this album did not resonate with me at all. Most everybody else loves it so I must be in the twilight zone or something. I do believe that because it was their longest span in between releasing albums, fans were hungry for their music and so I think just about anything they released was going to be unconditionally loved. 1. Black Celebration 2. Songs of Faith & Devotion 3. Violator 4. Music for the Masses 5. Ultra 6. Sounds of the Universe 7. Playing the Angel 8. A Broken Frame 9. Some Great Reward 10. Delta Machine 11. Speak & Spell 12. Construction Time Again 13. Spirit 14. Exciter 15. Memento Mori If B sides Dangerous, Happiest Girl & Sea of Sin were included on the Violator album I’d probably make that my #1 but they’re not, so it’s 3rd. Sounds of the Universe & Playing the Angel both graded out even for me but since Sounds of the Universe gets so much backlash, I gave it the nudge. My favorite song can be interchangeable at times depending on my mood so there is no definitive number one although “Black Celebration” probably is my number one more than any other most of the time. My favorite Depeche Mode music video of all time-It’s No Good. (The “H” is silent in Dave’s last name) ✌️
Omg so true! I remember like it was yesterday...raced to the record store north star mall ...it was cold n dreary march of 93was finishing my masters comps test exhausted ...and I started playing it ....and the heavens parted and angels descended .it quickly obliterated the stress I had ..I will never ever experience that again...Thank You for taking me back and Thank you Mr Wilder!😍💕💕💕hes truly a genius...to me Sofad is number one!
Really agree with this!! I found about SOFAD through Walking In My Shoes last year, so I decided to listen to the whole album and it was really an emotional journey, it still is to this day, every song on that album touches me in one way or another, especially I Feel You, Condemnation, Judas, In Your Room, Rush and Higher Love.
The holy trinity - I love it. So spot on! Such brilliance and talent, I can hardly take it! Shake the Disease is a stunning track. Love to turn that up and enjoy the full effect. Hope all is well and thank you for stopping by!
I knew who depeche mode was as a kid in the early 90s but didn't get into them obsessively until around 2003. So I went to a record store and got a couple albums from the used cd bin. It was Ultra and Exciter. I loved those albums and still do to this day. When Playing the Angel came out, it was the first full experience I had with them being aware of a new release, tour, etc. So I'm one of those few who tend to slant towards the newer stuff vs the 80s stuff. I like the 80s sound but not as much as the newer stuff. So my list would actually go 1: Ultra 2: Playing the Angel 3: Exciter 4: Violator 5: Songs of faith and devotion 6: Delta Machine 7: Sounds of the universe 8: Spirit The rest are the 80s albums are good but I mostly listen to singles from them and rarely full albums through. Again, probably just a function of when I really got into them.
Hi James! Thanks for chiming in on this video! Ultra would now be in my top 3. I would slightly modify my ranking a bit after having done this video a few years ago. Still love this band to pieces! Love that you really dig the newer stuff as well. The new era is underrated! And R.I.P. Fletch!
Top 5 Albums 5. Exciter 4. Sounds of the universe 3. Violator 2. Ultra 1. Song of faith and devotion Top 5 Songs 5. Never let me down again 4. Free 3. Cover me 2. Mercy in you 1. Enjoy the silence
Hi Cesar! Thanks so much for watching my Depeche Mode ranking video! It's fun to see how others rank their albums! Glad to see Sounds of the Universe made your top 5. It's a very underrated album in their catalog! Yeesss, you also have SOFAD at #1! Cheers, my friend!
My guess to average most people's favourite albums : 1. Violator (1990) 2. Music for the Masses (1987) 3. Black Celebration (1986) 4. Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993) 5. Ultra (1997) 6. Playing the Angel (2005) 7. Some Great Reward (1984) 8. Memento Mori (2023) 9. Sounds of the Universe (2009) 10. Exciter (2001) 11. Delta Machine (2013) 12. Speak And Spell (1981) 13. Construction Time Again (1983) 14. A Broken Frame (1982) 15. Spirit (2017) It's just my guess, I don't have a ranking of my favorite albums, because I take it that every album is good at something ☺️
Exciter has some pretty good songs like Dream on, When the body speaks, Goodnight lovers, Iam you. Yeah its a very mellow album, but Depeche modes "worst" albums are still better than what most other bands put out.
Hey there! Thanks for checking out my DM ranking video. Oh, how I love DM. It's hard doing a ranking because naturally one will fall to the bottom...even if it's a good album! Yes, Exciter does have a few gems on it. Peace.
Hard to see Exciter being top of anyone's list although none of their recent albums have been great. I remember being totally underwhelmed when Dream On came out. Truly though not a bad album, more subtle than before. Good production by Mark Bell just lacking big hooks of previous. Although I like Freelove and the Sweetest Condition.
Hi Martin! I appreciate you watching my DM ranking! I also love the Sweetest Condition from Exciter. Lately I've been listening to Ultra and Sounds of the Universe a lot. :-) Peace.
Have you listened to Marin Gores first solo album “Counterfeit”? It’s so good. Martin recorded it in 1989 when he was near the top of his game (just before Violator). 1) Violator 2) Ultra 3) Music for the Masses 4) Black Celebration 5) Playing the Angel “Wrong” was the right choice for the single to SOTU. It’s the best song on the record imo. It’s popular on the forums. Wrong, to me, is their best song from the last 3 albums. I But, as you say, it’s all subjective. Good video :)
Hi Nicholas! Yes, I have Counterfeit from Martin Gore on CD! It's so underrated! Great top 5 you have. I love that you put Playing the Angel in there, too! I still don't enjoy "Wrong" that much, but yes, it is all subjective. :-) Cheers!
Mi Top: 01- Playing the Angel 02- Ultra 03- Black Celebration 04- Delta Machine 05- Songs Of Faith and Devotion 06- Violator 07- Memento Mori 08- Some Great Reward 09- Music For The Masses 10- Sounds of the Universe 11- Spirit 12- Exciter 13- Construction Time Again 14- Speak & Spell
It s 5 years later but as I just finished my 12 th concert 5 days ago in Paris, here we go: 5/ Playing the Angel 4/ Black Célébration 3/ Songs of F&D 2/ Music for the Masses 1/ Violator And for the song, even if it s roughly impossible to only pick 5 5/ Shake the Disease 4/ Sweetest Perfection 3/ Never let me Down again 2/ In your room 1/ and I really can t décide between Personnal Jesus and Policy of Truth but I would probably go by 1% on the last one
Nice vid! Just starting to get into Depeche Mode recently. (Actually going to make a video on Erasure & Depeche Mode on my arts channel in the future, so this was really cool to check out!)
Talk about a list true devoted (blah), without this list of albums (and songs)I would never understand this band even mode (even though I only know some of them that I like 👍), I may have been too young to remember Depeche mode (from growing up)but thanks to an older sibling, I wouldn't agree more... also this might be a little bit crazy but my favorite song (from them)was actually the one they covered(and it's been that way ever since): that would be, Route 66?...[yes], also thanks and Bravo 👏.
Ask 100 DM fans to rank their albums, and you will get 100 different rankings. I'm not sure if the same is true for other people, but my list changes from week to week, particularly the favorites. The faves hover around the top of the list but consistently trade places because I have been invested since 1981, and it is difficult to separate them emotionally (yeah, its THAT deep, LOL). I was an above-casual fan for Speak & Spell and A Broken Frame but jumped to a massive fanboy when Construction Time Again hit the shelves. Here's my list with fave tracks, but to be honest everything in 1 through 9 moves around occasionally, with 1 through 5 all having seen # 1 at some point. 1 - Some Great Reward - Stories of Old / Lie to Me / It Doesn’t Matter 2 - Construction Time Again - Two Minute Warning / Pipeline / Everything Counts 3 - Violator - Policy of Truth / Enjoy the Silence / Clean 4 - Song of Faith and Devotion - In Your Room / Rush / Mercy in You 5 - Speak and Spell - Puppets / New Life / Photographic 6 - Music for the Masses - To Have and To Hold / Nothing / Agent Orange 7 - Black Celebration - New Dress / Bot Not Tonight / Fly on the Windscreen 8 - Ultra - Useless / It's No Good / Sister of Night 9 - A Broken Frame - The Sun and The Rainfall / My Secret Garden / Nothing to Fear 10 - Playing the Angel - Precious / John the Revelator / Lillian 11 - Memento Mori - Ghosts Again / Wagging Tongue / Always You / My Favorite Stranger 12 - Spirit - Going Backwards / Where's the Revolution /Poorman 13 - Exciter - Dream On / Free Love 14 - Sounds of the Universe - Nothing memorable 15 - Delta Machine - Nothing memorable

I agree with you on the top 5, I’d just have black celebration ahead of ultra. Great review of their catalog. Just wondering what your opinion on the hundreds of remixes of Depeche Mode songs? I heard in an interview that Martin Gore wasn’t a real fan of them… saying something like “ what? … our version wasn’t good enough?” But I think it’s a way to pay homage and admiration to them. It’s not that I like the remixes more… but after hearing the originals hundreds of times, it’s nice to hear something I love in just a different way.
I grew up with this band. The only album I actually bought on release was B.C. I did buy that singles collection about 10 yrs ago which I play regularly, fave track , Behind the Wheel. There's an odd movie made in the early 80's about their first American tour? Favourite moment from that is when the management are completely blown away by how much money can be made from merch 😊 Good Vid.
Great breakdown list of my favorite band! I might have flipped 1 & 2, but otherwise we are on the same page. And your number one song is also mine. And of course as you know that song just soars in concert. Goose bump producing. Thanks for the great videos. I always enjoy your tastes.
That was very enjoyable Amb. I used to hear these guys so much on alternative terrestrial radio. But now that I listen to satellite I don't hear them as much anymore. But that is where our turntables come in and take over. All day D Mode if we want. Loved the last minute or so. You would be a natural in a video~ Rob/Boston
Ooops, I'm not Ambie! Yeah, for some reason radio stations (at least around here) NEVER play Depeche Mode. Maybe they were overplayed in the Violator days and because of that people don't want to revisit them? I don't know, but it's sad! Oh heck yeah...for the past few weeks it's been nearly all Depeche Mode listening for me and it was quite enjoyable! Always appreciate you stopping by, my friend! Peace. ~Hanna
Really enjoyed this, Hanna. Love Depeche and love album rankings. And great to see that you have Ulta high on your list. A bit underrated but their is not a bad song on that album. Take care.
Thanks so much, Pelle! I'm glad you enjoyed my ranking. Yeah, I'm not sure why Ultra is overlooked by many. Like you said, there's not a bad track on it! Thanks again for watching! Peace. ~Hanna
This was difficult! DM's my all-time fave, and I have quite a collection - 146 CDs, at least two versions of every album, around a dozen original 12" vinyl singles, several promo-only CDs (including an Enjoy the Silence single I got on a visit to KROQ), and a few DJ remix-collection bootlegs. I've seen every show since the Devotional tour, and I've been taking my daughter with me since 1999 (when she was 2 years old). Huge fan. Anyway, here's my list: 14. Speak & Spell 13. Spirit 12. Some Great Reward 11. A Broken Frame 10. Exciter 9. Construction Time Again 8. Delta Machine 7. Sounds of the Universe 6. Songs of Faith and Devotion 5. Playing the Angel 4. Ultra 3. Violator 2. Music for the Masses 1. Black Celebration Like I said, so difficult! There are songs I love on Spirit and especially A Broken Frame, but everything else deserved a higher spot - so many good songs! Martin's songwriting is amazing, Alan's skills are undeniable (love Recoil), the band wouldn't exist without Fletch, but Dave's growth and perseverance have earned him my utmost admiration. He's the best. BTW, my prized possession is probably the In Your Room (CD2) LCD Bong 24 single with the live version of Fly on the Windscreen performed at some shows during the Devotional tour. What a journey that song made to this final, epic version!
Hey David! Well, it seems your DM collection blows mine out of the water! Very enviable indeed! I've been working on mine but I have a ways to go! So cool that you've been able to see every show. I'd love to see them again. I've only been lucky enough to see them on the Playing the Angel tour. Dave has really grown as a songwriter/contributor/performer. Martin is simply one of the most talented songwriters ever! I need to obtain that In Your Room CD2! Very awesome! Cheers!
Loved the video, thanks for sharing. Songs of Faith... is number one for me too.... I've started a channel about my passion for Depeche Mode and collecting records... I just made a video about the reasons Alan Wilder left the band... please take a look. All the best, Nic from the UK
Thanks so much, Nic. I just saw this comment now. For some reason it ended up in my spam folder. I'm so glad SOFAD is also your #1. Hard to beat it! I'll have to check out your video when I get a chance. Cheers!
Ahh Exciter gets damned to the last spot. I have fond memories of that one discovering it during a long deployment in Moscow, Russia. It played pretty frequently on Russian pop stations at the time. My all time favorite is Violator. It was one of my first ever CDs I purchased. Outside of the greatest hits thought, I don't have anything prior to Music For The Masses. Loved the intro and outro. I can tell you had fun putting it together.
Yeah, it’s just the nature of putting a list together. Love all the albums, but one has to be in that last spot! Very cool you have some good memories of listening to Exciter while you were in Russia! Hahahaha, yeah, maybe I went a little over the top with the intro and outro, but it was a blast! Thanks, Paul. I always appreciate you stopping by. Hanna
My ranking: 14: Sound of the Universe 13: Speak and Spell 12: Delta Machine 11: Exciter 10: Spirit 9: A Broken Frame 8: Construction Time Again 7: Playing the Angel 6: Some Great Reward 5: Ultra 4: Black Celebration 3: Violator 2: Music for the Masses 1. Songs of Faith & Devotion
Awww, I'm sorry that you rank Sounds of The Universe last! Haha, totally cool, I know it's not for everyone. Ultra has moved to my top 3 now. Your top 3 is killer! Thanks so much for sharing your ranking with me! Depeche Mode forever!
I'm a huge Depeche fan also. I think the production on SOFAD is absolutely amazing. particularly In Your Room. I wish they would re-do the video for it and use the album version... and yes... Devotional! I wish I could have seen them on that tour.
Oh man, I would have LOVED to have seen them on the Devotional tour. I was a bit too young at the time, though. I love popping that DVD on and marveling at how incredible they were during this period. They still are, but they were at their peak then, IMO. DM forever!
Not a big fan of Depeche Mode, but I live quite near where they are from, Basildon a town in the county of Essex in England. The mystique of the band kind of goes if you know the area!
Very good video complimets from Italy! I'm a very big Depeche Mode fan and this is my list: 14: A broken frame 13: Speak and spell 12: Delta machine 11: Playing the angel 10: Exciter 9: Sounds of universe 8: Spirit 7: Some great reward 6: Construction time again 5: Ultra 4: Black celebration 3: Songs of faith & devotion 2: Violator 1: Music for the masses I agree with a lot of things you said about the albums and but I was really surprised not to see Personal jesus in your top 20 songs and Personal jesus only 16, but everyone has their own taste. Thank you for the video done very well. Like
You have an outstanding list, Lorenzo! Thank you for joining in. Depeche Mode fans need to stick together! I love that SOFAD is in your top 3! I like Personal Jesus, but it just doesn't make my top 20. Be well.
Violator is number one. But I put the rest in the categories of pre-Violator and post-violator--can't really compare against each other because they are so different. Everything pre-violator is ranked backwards, and everything post-violator is ranked forward (with a couple exceptions). So Violator is always number 1, then pre-violator goes 2. MFTM, 3. Black Celebration, 4. Some Great Reward/People Are People, 5. Construction Time Again/Broken Frame (about the same IMO), and 7. Speak and Spell (although if I could delete a couple songs off Speak and Spell, I would put it at no. 5 with CTA and BF. Post Violator: 2. SOFAD, 3. Ultra 4. Playing the Angel, 5. SOTU and Delta Machine (about the same caliber), 7. Exciter (notable exception to the rule) and 8. Spirit. All great albums though, with the exception of Spirit, but Spirit still has some good ones.
Thanks for checking out my DM video! I guess it's a few years old and a few of my rankings have changed slightly I guess. I would now put Ultra in my top 3 as I am just obsessed with it the past 2 years. I enjoyed reading your thoughts and providing your picks!
14, Delta Machine 13, Sound of the Universe 12, Broken frame 11, Exciter 10, Spirit 9, Speak and Spell 8, Playing the Angel 7, Songs of faith and devotion 6. Construction time again 5. Ultra 4. Violator 3. Some Great Reward 2. Music for the Masses 1. Black celebration +1 101 In my opinion
Pretty close to my album ranking. #1 is so #1 - I agree. And the songs? Here's (only) my Top 10: I feel you. World in my Eyes. In your Room. Personal Jesus. Never let me down again. Stripped. Enjoy the Silence. Walking in my Shoes. Blasphemous Rumours. Leave in Silence. And, and, and ... (Where is: Love in itself?! And where is : Nothing?! Where's: It's no good? And where is ...). Tough challenge.
Hi Frank. So glad you agree with my #1, too! I really love your top 10 tunes. Yeah, it's so difficult to narrow it down, right...because DM have so many perfect songs! Love In Itself is an amazing track! I might even have to revise my list a bit! Hehe! Take care.
Iam huge DM fan too. My favorite is Song of Faith, Violator, Music for the Masses, also like Ultra, Some Great Reward. Honestly after Ultra I don't like them except some songs. Missing Alan Wilder. But this what is this. Still one of my favorite band.
Hi Hanna, Thank-you for an excellent review of Depeche Mode albums. I'm only just getting into them mainly through Never Let Me Down Again, Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence so it's a great help.
I'm so glad my ranking video was helpful! What a band, and still going strong even with the loss of Fletch a few months ago. May you continue to enjoy the Depeche Mode journey!
Liked your choice. A few beers, just catch that lovely warm squiffy feeling, comfy soft armchair, lights off headphones on put on SISTER OF NIGHT and just let that gorgeousness course through your body and mind. To me ultra was the last album I could just leave to play uninterrupted everything after I find myself play, skip, play ,skip, skip
Loved your comment, Michael - especially about Sister of Night. Lately I've really been enjoying Sounds of the Universe. It often takes me to another place. Hope all is well and thank you for the comment!
Hey, did you ever go to Drastic Plastic in Omaha? I sold Mode to a lot of people there when it was open! Also, tried thinking of my favorite album and could NOT. can pick favorite songs (never let me down and in my room) but the albums are too near and dear!!
Hi Dylan! Yes, I went to Drastic Plastic plenty when they were still here. A year ago I did a series of 3 videos or so of their closing sale where I got tons of stuff for half off! There are so many amazing DM songs that it indeed is hard to narrow it down! Cheers, and thanks for watching!
#3??? If you listen from front to back the songs are not in a random order, the album flows. Which also makes it an outstanding album to get busy with.
The Omaha Introvert the weather outside is starting to turn cold. As the days go by and winter takes hold I will most likely be spending more time with the vinyl community . 🙂
My introduction to D M was the album A Broken Frame. I originally bought it b/c of the cover (see, I knew I wasn't the only one who liked the cover lol), not having heard their music previously. I took it with me on a trip to Ireland and listened to it constantly on that trip and fell in love with the band. My favorite albums after that (in no order) Music for the Masses, Black Celebration, Ultra and some of Violator. Ultra came out when I was in high school and holds a special place for me. Ultra is another good night time driving listen. Ultra is a significantly darker album than a lot of theirs partly b/c it was right as Gahan was about to hit rock bottom with his addiction, and this ended up being the album made before he got clean. Subsequent albums tended to have a lighter tone, although it seems they may have gotten a bit darker again in their most recent albums. I haven't really gotten into any of their albums post Ultra. Like a few songs here and there from those more recent albums, but that's about it. Maybe I need to revisit some of the newer ones with a bit more of an open mind. Yay, I'm glad Ultra made your top 5. When it came out people dumped on it a lot and it got a bad wrap but I loved it and so its good to see people are giving it its due now. Hehe - the place we diverge is at number 1.. That was the favorite DM album of one of my best friends in high school but I could never seem to get into it. But I can see why other people really like it a lot. (sorry for how long the post is) I know this is long already but I'll add a list of some of my fav songs real quick: (not in any order) Leave in Silence, Sun and the Rainfall (there is a song by Madness with a similar title that's also really good), Black Celebration, Just can't get enough, Thing you said, never let me down again, strangelove, enjoy the silence, policy of truth, Home, It's no good (there is a cover version of this by Chevelle - a band I usually can't stand but this cover is awesome and worth checking out), Sister of night. I'll have to listen to the post-Ulltra albums again and see if there are some songs I dig these days. I just remember when Exciter came out I was ahem excited for a new DM album to be coming out, but then I listened to it and it just didn't connect. The same came with Playing the Angel and then I think I just gave up and stuck to listening to their older albums I already liked. So, as I said I'll have to work my way through the newer ones and maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised somewhere in there. Great video (I just came across your stuff and so I'm working my way through them)
You are AWESOME! I love Ultra more and more as the years go by. There's just something about it. Love the order of the songs and just a great groove to it all. Oh yeah, definitely a great night time album...driving or not! Post-ultra I really connected with Playing the Angel and Songs of the Universe. You may be pleasantly surprised upon a re-listen of the more recent albums! Really enjoyed reading your thoughts. You put a lot of time into this comment and I really appreciate you being here. Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert After watching yoru videos my interest has definitely been reignited to go back through the catalogs of a number of groups and see if there aren't some things that maybe I judged too quickly when they came out. I would love to discover some additional D M songs that I can connect with and so I look forward to listening to those post-Ultra albums again. I think I may have said it in comment on another video, but check out Scott Walker's 1960's material. Probably best to get a greatest hits type album that condenses down his 4 albums (Scott 1-4) to the best tracks (and you could go back later and listen to the full albums as well). B/c I think you might connect with his work. Songs like "It's raining today" or "On your own again" or "Montague terrace in blue" or for a slightly country tinge "Duchess" and "Rhymes of goodbye" from Scott 4. You can just check out some of these songs on youtube and see if you like them, but I think you might (again, if you haven't heard his stuff already) One last recommendation: there's a good chance you've heard them already, but I don't think I've heard you mention them in any videos yet, Check out the 60's ish band Love. The album "Forever Changes" specifically from 1967 I think. Since you mentioned really liking the Doors and the Beach Boys and the Beatles (and to be fair who doesn't? lol) I think Love's "Forever Changes" is probably a sure thing for you. The songs "Alone again or" and " The Good Humor Man..." and "A house is not a motel" and "Andmoreagain" are all really good songs and I think you'd like them if you haven't given them a listen yet.
Honestly, A Broken Frame and Ultra have really been growers for me during the past few months. A Broken Frame is very special for me, it has amazing songs like Leave In Silence, Secret Garden, Nothing to Fear, See You, Shouldn't Have Done That and especially Sun and the Rainfall. As for Ultra, that album has been very special, but I'm connecting to it more and more, it's now my 3rd or 4th favourite.
I hit up High Fidelity Records on LI today: well, the store was actually crammed full of CDs, not just vinyl, which is great, but the organization was a nightmare. Piles of crap all over the place, a lot of it not organized at all. I found the Depeche Mode Catching Up With DM (I own it already but cannot find it right now), and the later 1998 CD of the later singles, so those went right on the portable player/amp combo. They had ZERO My Bloody Valentine on CD. I did find The Church 1 CD Greatest Hits which is a fine collection. Bought my possibly third copy of The Clash's Essential 2 CD set, just to get it on the player. Also found sealed new Tom Petty 2 CD Greatest Hits, and the Lloyd Cole one disc best of. They had no Motorhead at all on CD. NO Iron Maiden on CD, at all. Very weird store. Really not that impressed with it. Prices are ok. They had mainly old Beatles CDs and none of the new reissues out, which to me is absurd. They had tons of expensive Mobile Fidelity vinyl box sets and stuff like that, super expensive, and new metal LPs. I"m surprised how good Catching Up With Depeche Mode still sounds on that old CD, a tiny tad harsh but it sounds quite good via the new IFI amp here. The bass boost helps. High Fidelity is a good store, but they waste too much store space with piles of cruddy old DVDs and stuff that nobody is going there for, really, and unorganized old cassette tapes and things like that, just haphazardly strewn all over the CD stacks. It's like nobody has made any effort to really organize the stock at all, a dirty dusty mess, like a few other LI NY record shops I could mention. Anyway, great to find the DM collections I needed them desperately for the collection! I wish they'd had DM 101 (DVD or CDs) but they didn't! WTF?
When a record store isn't organized, that is a pet peeve of mine. I need to be able to find something quickly. If I have hours to spend in a store, that's fine, but I'm guessing most people don't! Glad you found a Church greatest hits. My first Church CD was their greatest hits. Nice pickups!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Also got the one CD Lloyd Cole Greatest, which is good since I found out the two Cole box sets are going for $300 or more. Why, I dunno. Didn't even know they put out Lloyd Cole box sets until a week ago. The music biz is all kinds of messed up nowadays. Anyway, a few of th LI stores are total messes not organized at all, or not very well. Dirty, dusty etc. I don't like it. Makes me miss Tower and Virgin store even more. Even Bleecker Bobs decades ago was not disorganized!
Right on! That singles compilation is so wonderful and I still enjoy listening to it! I'm sure you'll enjoy! Also, I'm glad you liked my video. Thank you for the kind words! Peace. ~Hanna
I know that I'm late, but here's my list: 14. Spirit 13. Exciter 12. Speak and spell 11. Songs of faith and devotion (I know that is strange, but for me it's a little boring... But I love other albums that are very similar) 10. Delta machine 9. Some great rewards 8. Construction Time Again 7. Violator 6. Ultra 5. Black celebration 4. Sounds of the universe 3. Playing the angel 2. A broken frame 1. Music for the masses For the top of my favourite songs I'm not sure, because they change according to the period, but for now is: 20. Two second warning 19. Strangelove 18. The darkest star 17. Enjoy the silence 16. One caress 15. Precious 14. Sister of night 13. Satellite 12. Blasphemous rumours 11. Jezebel 10. Black celebration 9. My secret garden 8. Halo 7. Fragile tension 6. Behind the wheel 5. Leave in silence 4. See you 3. Suffer well 2. Never let me down again 1. Shake the disease The songs are very different, but every one of this is a particular feeling... However there are others that I love, but are too much!
Wonderful list, Francesco! (and you're never too late to provide a DM list!). Sister of Night is one of my favorite songs lately. My Secret Garden is an underrated tune! I also love that you have ranked Playing the Angel and Sounds of the Universe so highly! Awesome!
1. Black Celebration 2. Violator 3. Some Great Reward 4. Music for the Masses 5. A Broken Frame 6. Construction Time Again 7. Speak and Spell 8. Songs of Faith and Devotion 9. Ultra 10. Spirit 11. Delta Machine 12. Playing the Angel 13. Sounds of the Universe 14. Exciter
Hi Nicolas! Thanks for sharing your terrific list! I'm saddened that Sounds of the Universe ranked so low for you, but it seems it's not a favorite for many. I really latched onto it. Cheers!
Interesting countdown..i could only do top 5 5.songs of faith..4.playing angel 3.black celebration 2.ultra 1. Violator top 5 on songs 5.freelove (remix)4.flys on windscreen(catching up version)3.in your room 2.barrel of a gun 1.behind the wheel
I agree with a lot of your choices and decisions to be honest. I struggled and still do with Exciter. Its the same with Sounds Of the Universe though. It leaves me quite cold. My top 5 would be the same...just in a different order! Ultra has grown on me in time so would be in top 5. I think In Your Room, Shake The Disease or Never Let Me down are my favourite songs...but it's so hard to choose with so many fantastic tracks!! Interesting video...great to see your choices 😊👍
Hey Stevie! Thanks so much for checking out my DM ranking video! I just spun Sounds of the Universe and Ultra the other night because I needed some DM in my ears. Ultra has grown on me so much, too. Every time I listen to it I'm left in awe. Love your favorite songs by them, of course! Great to connect with fellow fans! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert you're welcome! I'm listening to a different DM album every day now chosen at random, so i can re-evaluate them and see if anything has changed. Inspired by you! So far ive re-listened to Delta Machine and Some Great Reward. I think Ultra has a feel of weariness and burnout which I love. It fits in with the problems Dave and the band were having for the few years before that album.
out of all my records , have no depeche mode :( You've ever heard the Grifters "So happy together" LP ? Worth looking for . seen nine inch nails year's ago , opening act in Pittsburgh . talking with someone there how I liked their sound - remember them saying , They sound liked warmed over Depeche Mode .
The Omaha Introvert My friend booked underground bands never gave any a guarantee , only paid them door . The Grifters , only band he paid a guarantee . So happy together - Only album I'm familiar with . Hard to digest then grows on u longer you listen .
For the last 2 weeks , I have been listening all the albums to establish my definitive ranking . So , here we go ! 14:Exciter 13:Delta Machine 12:Spirit 11:Songs of Faith and Devotion 10:Speak and Spell 9:Sounds of the Universe 8:Construction Time Again 7:Ultra 6:Playing the Angel 5:Black Celebration 4:Some Great Reward 3:Violator 2:A Broken Frame 1:Music for the Masses My favourite song is " Never Let Me Down Again " . I think there are around 40 songs that I really really like .
Hi Philippe! Wow, sorry to see you rated SOFAD so low! We have the same favorite DM song in "Never Let Me Down Again"! Thanks for sharing your list with me! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovertSoFaD is OK though a bit overrated . I think that from this album , the sound of Depeche Mode started to change radically from the synthpop they had played since the beginning of their career . I admit that it made me lose the secret link between me and the band .
Interesting picks. As for me, I'd say : 14. Delta Machine 13. Speak and Spell 12. Sounds of the Universe 11. Exciter 10. A Broken Frame 9. Some Great Reward 8. Construction Time Again 7. Spirit 6. Black Celebration 5. Playing the Angel 4. Violator 3. Ultra 2. Music for the Masses 1. Songs of Faith and Devotion I guess that most people's top 4 will be made of the four same albums ^^ As for my top songs, well, I should think about it someday. But here is probably my (current) top 5 (the top 3 will probably always stay the same though) : 5. Behind the Wheel 4. Freestate 3. Stripped 2. In Your Room 1. Walking in my Shoes
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your list!!!! Aww, Sounds of the Universe is so low on yours. 😢 SOFAD is hard to beat!!!! I agree with much of your ranking! Ooo, your top 5 is excellent, too!!!! Walking in My Shoes is so moving. Peace.
Yes, it is very low on my list. I don't know, I used to like it better a bit after it came out. I kinda like the sounds and all but didn't got much into its... well... universe =D That being said, I've always loved "Little Soul", "Corrupt" and liked a few others. I guess I put it under Exciter because the 2001 album, even though it is the one I listen to the least, is very homogeneous and can be very enjoyable in certain circonstances (listening to it over a hill, chilling during some spring break with a little breeze caressing your cheeks... that can be smooth =D ). And I put it under ABF and SGR because I like their atmospheres more. But overall, I don't think that SotU is a bad album at all =) I only dislike Delta Machine, actually You put CTA pretty low on your list, so we're even =D Btw, very impressive collection, that you have ! =) I started collecting some vinyls in the last two years. It is nothing much, but I'm glad to see my shelves getting more and more filled =P
Agree that most people will choose the same top 4 albums. We only differ in one choice. You have Ultra at nr. 1 while I would have Black Celebration share nr. 1 with SOFAD. Two things kinda shocked me. Spirit DM´s 7th best album? I agree on the albums that are ahread of Spirit on your list. I disagree on the 7 albums that are behind it. Spirit should be nr 14. And Freestate? Ultra I listen to lacks Feestate, Sister of Night and Bottom Line, instead it features Surrender, Only When I Lose Myself and Slowblow (Darren Price mix)...and Useless I just changed the album version for the 7-inch version. The other 4 tracks in your Top 5 are all great songs. It´s just that Never Let Me Down Again I consider to be the band´s best track ever. No doubt about it. Greetings from Prague to wheerevr you are from, Jakub
DM for me is Black Celebration and then "everything else." Its a perfect record what can I say? I saw the tour in 86 with Book of Love opening. It's dark moody and depressing just like me LOL. But people like to listen to sad music and it makes them feel happy. Go figure. I love lots of DM songs but the most special for me are all off BC and they actually don't get much attention: Here is the House, the ballad Sometimes, and But Not Tonight (US release only, and yes DM didn't like the song, but I think it's the real "closer" to the album).
Hey Chris! Thanks for sharing your DM thoughts here. I'm trying to determine if much would change from my list. I think now I would rank Ultra higher than Violator. It just really hits "home" for me. ;-) I like those unappreciated songs from BC, too. It's been a while since I spun BC, so I think I will do that tonight, thank you!
Based on your video I dusted off my copy of Ultra a couple days ago. Its definitely up there out of everything I have by them, which is 90% eighties period. But I never bought the last 5 or 6 albums so I'm not very informed. I like too much music. That's the problem.
"Broken" is such a fantastic song! I love it. It's also one of my top 10 favorite songs of my favorite band of all time ("Walking in My Shoes" is my favorite song of theirs). This is my DM albums ranking: 14. Spirit 13. Exciter 12. Sounds of the Universe 11. A Broken Frame 10. Construction Time Again 9. Playing the Angel 8. Speak & Spell 7. Delta Machine 6. Some Great Reward 5. Music for the Masses 4. Black Celebration 3. Ultra 2. Violator 1. Songs of Faith and Devotion. My favorite album of all time. Great video, BTW!
Hi again, Lado! Thanks for watching my DM ranking! This was fun to do! Broken indeed is one of their best songs! I love that Songs of Faith & Devotion is also your #1! It's a masterpiece. So beautiful and haunting! Ultra has been one that I have been listening to more and more and it now makes my top 3. Sorry you're not a Sounds of the Universe fan. I just listened to it again a few weeks ago and it's still a favorite of mine. Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I really like all of their albums. Even those that I rank lower. Including SotU. I love 'In Chains" and "Fragile Tension" from it :D
And of course: Very sad that Andrew Fletcher has meanwhile passed away. Good on the other two guys to still continue, though! I'd heard their new single 'Ghosts Again' for the first time only a couple of days ago and think it's not too shabby either 😊 And quite funny: One evening in November last year, just as I was on my way to bed, I suddenly had 'Love, In Itself' pop into my mind, reminding me of the time when it was released and making me smile - When I checked my phone for messages the next morning, I discovered that my Son had sent me 'Dreaming Of Me' around the same time! 😳 Telepathy?! 🤔😅 In any case, I was shocked (in the most positive way), because that's one of my favourite early DM songs, and I also was surprised that my Son actually knew these guys! 😄
Nice one, Hanna! 😀👍 Yes, I can imagine quite a bit of work must've gone into making this video! 😯 I've always liked DM a lot myself, from around the time when the singles 'Get The Balance Right' and 'Everything Counts' were released. I even once was in a DM-influenced Electronica band myself, between '97 and '01, named _Lederer_ 😀 My own #1 would be 'Black Celebration', I think 🙂 And I too liked 'Ultra' a lot when it was released, also because it felt like the perfect soundtrack to my life at the time; Still a great album today! 😊👍 And it must've been the tour that followed the 'Singles 86-98' album release that I got to see DM live in concert that one time so far, in Frankfurt/Germany (I live in NZ now), and it was a blast, too! 😍 I actually also had a ticket for a show of the 'Violator' tour (and I agree: a rather 'meh' album, also compared to the previous, 'Ultra'), but I ended up giving it to my Big Sis who had been very sad about being unable to get one herself, and she's a way bigger DM fan than myself 😄 ...
Whoa I feel Omaha has slipped into some weird Twin Peaks-ian alternate universe! There's even a red curtain and Beetlejuice is looking extra creepy ;-) Only DM I have is Construction Time Again and Black Celebration LP's, both thrifted over the years. Never was much of a fan but I might have to revisit those. Cheers!
Ahahahaha! I guess there are some creepy elements to this video! It's almost Halloween, so why not?! Sorry you were never much of a DM fan. I know they're not for everyone. At least you have two great albums to give another spin! Thanks, Doug. ~Hanna
